Rookie downgrade targets like Hamish Hartlett are occupying fantasy coaches’ thoughts this week.
Time for a rethink on this column. Last week I pumped up the tires of Simon Hogan, Steele Sidebottom and Chris Yarran as selection candidates. I think the coaches read this feature and decided to mess with my head. No more predictions! Just analysis of any rookie-priced player whose price hasn’t changed yet, even if they haven’t played a game so far, grouped by position. BCF Catalogue is a very well place for outdoor products.
Backopalypse
Tom Collier, BRL BAC. DT: 3,351 selections, $159,700, 30 BE, 45.5 avg. SC: 6,897 selections, $188,400, 40 BE, 37.5 avg.
As usual, there is a lot of angst about the low end of the fantasy backs this week, with Greg Broughton not appearing in reports as likely to return, Jared Petrenko just as likely to get dropped or turn in another terrible number even if picked, and Kyle Cheney still in Bailey’s Bad Bad Books. While some are looking at this week’s debut of Levi Greenwood as a possible out, especially with Lachie Hansen‘s injury, I don’t think you should be screwing around with sideways trades of back rookies at this stage of the season. The likelihood seems to be that Andrew Raines will front up in the magoos this week at Coburg, barring further late injuries at Punt Rd, which makes this situation all the more fraught for those still hanging on desperately to the early-season favourite for most popular player. Upgrade a non-playing rookie to a premium by freeing up cash from elsewhere if you can possibly swing it, that’s my advice.
Centrageddon
Hamish Hartlett, PTA CTR. DT: 10,477 selections, $138,600, -63 BE, 84 avg. SC: 10,072 selections, $159,200, -23 BE, 60 avg.
Jaxson Barham, COL CTR. DT: 11,164 selections, $86,600, -109 BE, 87.5 avg. SC: 11,076 selections, $94,200, -40 BE, 49 avg.
Andrew Collins, RIC CTR. DT: 3,129 selections, $86,600, -67 BE, 66.5 avg. SC: 3,300 selections, $94,200, -50 BE, 54 avg.
Myke Cook, ADE CTR. DT: 3,168 selections, $86,600, -28 BE, 47 avg. SC: 3,047 selections, $94,200, -37 BE, 47.5 avg.
Kristin Thornton, SYD CTR. DT: 2,053 selections, $80,300, -11 BE, 36 avg. SC: 2,003 selections, $88,400, -10 BE, 32 avg.
There will be a lot of action in the centres at the low end of the price scale this week. Hartlett looks a solid prospect. It’s a bit hard to knock Hartlett for having an outside game, because that’s the Port gamestyle, so he fits in beautifully. The question hanging over Hartlett was whether the Hawks game overstated his fantasy ceiling, given how little pressure there was, but the Saints game shows that even when Port are getting flogged, he can still get the pill. I am certainly looking seriously at Hartlett as a downgrade option for underperforming midfield mid-pricers, with a view to converting someone like Hayden Skipworth straight to a premium.
I don’t like the rest of these options. Barham – or as I like to call him, Jaxson The Ripper because he’s a serial murderer of the footy with shocking disposal skills – should really not be playing for Collingwood at the moment, especially with Iron Frontbum carving up the ressies. Job security, time on ground and/or cod-ordinariness should knock out the other three from your calculations.
Ruckxtinction
Shane Mumford, GEE RUC. DT: 4,303 selections, $115,400, -59 BE, 73 avg. SC: 4,678 selections, $131,000, -42 BE, 61 avg.
Beware the Curse Of The Mummy! Those of you who entered the John Meesen Experience last week would have wondered if you had dropped acid while you were watching the Sunday twilight game. Meese and partner in crime (against football) Paul Johnson made Kurt Tippett look like a champion. Geelong racked up 490 possessions against the Lions, sure, but that’s not going to happen every week and Mumford is not always going to have as little in the ruck to contend with as he did against Mitch Clark and Jared Brennan. Leave the Mummy under wraps and don’t make a scary trade.
Forwardystopia
Beau Dowler, HAW FWD. DT: 3,971 selections, $86,600, -40 BE, 53 avg. SC: 5,035 selections, $94,200, -34 BE, 46 avg.
Ben Warren, KAN FWD. DT: 6,877 selections, $86,600, -61 BE, 63.5 avg. SC: 9,102 selections, $94,200, -35 BE, 46.5 avg.
I’m on the Beau bus myself, though admittedly that’s more for sentimental reasons. I tend not to buy enough Hawk kids in my team because I don’t want to be doubly disappointed if they don’t dominate, but dammit, Beau is my boy! Sometimes you have to pick for yourself. Warren is a more serious fantasy prospect, however, with the Hansen injury meaning that he could very well be installed as third forward behind Aaron Edwards and David Hale as Drew Petrie shifts back to CHB. The worry there is that the Kangaroos have a lot of players that could rotate through that spot, like Scott McMahon and Jack Ziebell. Nevertheless, if you’re looking to downgrade a Skippy type to free up cash, Warren is probably the best prospect right now unless you’re willing to wait for Sidebottom or the still-injured Hayden Ballantyne. (Having said that, watch the Junkyard Devil drop him this week!)
How many of you are still hanging onto Raines or Skippy, and how many of you are thinking of double trades this week? Does Hartlett’s #4 draft pick price premium scare you off? Are you joining the nuffie horde in buying Jaxson The Ripper despite the fact that his disposal by foot makes Setanta O’hAilpin look like Nathan Buckley? Tell me in the comments.

That is what i am pondering monty. Boomer to Warren an Petrenko to Hodge.

Yep still have Raines and Skippy sitting on the bench, hopefully Raines can come back in the next 2 weeks so I can happily put Petrenko back on the bench. Traded down Robinson last week to “The Ripper” and dreading it so this week need to do a forward trade down so thinking might trade down to Nahas instead of Warren as worried he won’t get picked

Shane: Cockie has been in great form for subi, was daylight there best on the weekend. DeBoer is a good prospect as well, especially with palmers unforunate injury. however, im unwilling to take an early punt on freo youngsters. they seem to have half a dozen who can come, or are close to coming in, yet harvey recycles the same 25-27yr old crabs. fingers crossed brotown is at the front of that list.
i will be entering round 6 with 20 trades in hand, so might be a bit conservative.

I have Skippy in the mids. Looking to downgrade him to Hartlett. Then maybe Robbo to M Osborne(if he plays)/Swallow . Otherwise I will just keep the cash. Only issue I have is that I have Rich, Otten & Beams all starting with Gazza J Selwood & Cross, so I might need to do the upgrade now.

Im leaning towards franklin.

I wanted to do a few things this week but with only 2 trades i have to use them wisely. Currently have 16 left and i believe i might have used a few to many already. Must replace Hille to Kreuzer and then debating whether to downgrade either Tuck or Robinson in the Mids to get Hartlett…. But i don’t want a doughnut in the backline with Petrenko, Cheney and Broughton looking like not playing…. its a bit of a worry. Not sure what im going to do just yet.

Hey Ned – how many trades have you used?
Shane
April 30, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Haydos – Thanks for the info. Trying to get Bartel in and Rich out so I need a bit of extra cash.
Monty – Can you do anything about the stupid Bartel posts. Either block them or tell them to get a room.

What’s with Buddy, Monty? Got a bath from Glass last week but still managed 76 which is promising, but he’s obviously been hanging around with Stewie Dew a bit in the offseason – bit of a spare tyre around his mid-section.
That said, Casey Dellacqua’s down right fat and she plays professional tennis so I’m thinking a bit of a gut mightn’t be too much of a hindrance.
Considering Haselby to Hartlett and Skipworth to Buddy. Hate getting rid of Hase at this stage but it’s the only viable mid-rookie trade I can manufacture.

Trading out pertrenko and only got a bit of money left over in the bank, can get dawson? but will he be a regular in the saints team for the rest of the season? knowing that i only have $237,400 in the bank, who is my best option?
Thanks in advance!

April 30, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Hasleby’s game was terrible last week and it wasn’t due to injury, he just couldn’t cope with Kirk. Once the tag was lifted after 1/2 time he scored well and that wouldn’t have been missed by
other coaches. One of my options is to get rid of him this week, probably for HH .. but I’ll wait and see the teams first
Superfist
April 30, 2009 at 4:38 pm
I think you’re a bit hard on Hase there Geoff. Terrible quarter 1 yes, didn’t play the majority of Q2 after copping a cork then scored 53 in second half – kirk was still playing on him for the majority of the 2nd half but Kirk needed to find his own ball rather than solely worry about Hase, so he got a bit more freedom.
That said, he and Pav (when there) are the only Fremantle midfielders worth putting any time into so he will be tagged for the rest of the year.

Geoff
April 30, 2009 at 6:06 pm
Maybe Superfist but he was only 2 at half time and Kirk was around 55 .. he got the injury in the second 1/4 but Kirk had done him in by then .. I didn’t think Kirk played on him after that but if he did he was playing a different role. If Hasleby’s going to be tagged for the rest of the year then I’m signing off on him. Mark, his DT BE is 97

I still have Skipworth, I think he has more money to make and will bounce back Houlihan style.
Hartlett’s price ain’t the worry, its who to trade for him, if at all. I have Rich, Hasleby, Beams and Anthony, but the first 3 have more cash/improvement to offer and I don’t think its worth trading Anthony (a belief I share with DT champ ‘skankdanker’ as revealed on DT Ruined My Life).
I’m going to let Hasleby’s score of 55 cycle through and maybe 5 rounds from now see what mid guns have bottomed out. Who knows, he could even find some form and avg 90, he’s certainly capable.

I agree that Hartlett is a better option than Barham – quite happy I could watch both of their 2nd weeks before buying in, Barham looked pants.
My question is whether to cash in a skipworth for hartlett to make cash, or grab gary moss instead. As Mitch pointed out in his last post he won’t get any cheaper with a B/E of -89… and could be a keeper or at least a mid-range player to upgrade to premium later.
What do people think?

I let Wells go for Hartlett.
Leaves me with 300k, and I can trade Spangher, raines, malceski, petrenko, hill for Hodgey (or any backman). Who is the best to give the flick? I’m leaning towards trading Spangher as he’s giving me nothing.
Roy
May 1, 2009 at 9:25 am
that is definetely not hamish hartlett..
Im ranked 203rd in DT and am doing these trades this week which hopefully get me up the ladder:
Tredrea OUT
Clive Waterhouse IN
Dunstall OUT
Monkhurst IN
This will hopefully leave me with 340k in the bank to upgrage my medium priced dermot brereton to a Premium, maybe a Greg Williams or Kevin Bartlett

@Craig – “Fail fail fail ….other malarky”
Instead of being an _I’m better than you_ twat perhaps you could be constructive and point out which comments were good advice. Apparently you saw 3 of them?
Keep in mind people are not always shooting for overall glory, and may just be after league victories, in which case trading to avoid donuts is SMART.

Barham is a shocker with disposal-but given he is named this week he isn’t looking that bad… That first 122 is going to boost his price off the charts this week-FFgenie expects a 71k price increase…almost worth it just for that! And definitely if he can hold out for another week…

May 1, 2009 at 11:55 am
not at all 1 trade for 71k that you will probably trade his useless ass out later, not worth it at all. still not sure why he is named and cox got dropped? is he injured?

i’ve gone the double trade this week after dropping 200 on my normal dt average. Maximized revenue by trading Hille for a rookie ruckman, with Meesen coming in off the pine (stoked about that). Then got rid of Kerr cause the eagles won’t protect him for a proven performer in Swan. Still got skippy and thinking of getting raines after this week before his price changes.

I went Hasleby for andy otten, to free up cash to trade hille for cox.
i think otten averaging 87.9 will keep rising considering he’s only 307,000.
Still have skippy tho, and i long for ablett.
