Now that the SuperCoach competition has opened, let’s take a look at some typical fan-made squads.
I probably haven’t done enough of this in years past. I have a particular way of rating Dream Teams and SuperCoach squads, which starts with a perfect 10/10 and lops points off for bad players, bad structures and overall mediocrity. I give out very few 10s, especially early doors.
(There is an AFL Dream Team version of this post.)
Let’s rip right into it with three teams from the Rate My SuperCoach forum on this very site. plugger36’s squad is first under the microscope with $1,300 in cash left over:
Luke Hodge, Sam Fisher, Andrew Carrazzo, Corey Enright, Tadhg Kennelly, Marcus Drum, Jackson Trengove
Matt Maguire, Jake CarlisleDane Swan, Bernie Vince, Brad Sewell, Shaun Burgoyne, Brent Prismall, Dustin Martin
Ryan Bastinac, Koby StevensDarren Jolly, Shane Mumford
Matthew Lobbe, Wayde SkipperRyan O’Keefe, Nick Riewoldt, Lance Franklin, Brad Johnson, Brent Harvey, Brent Staker, Phil Davis
Scott Gumbleton, James Podsiadly
Typical line and length first up, with one rookie in each position. Wait, what is Mummify doing in the rucks (-1)? Bad, bad plugger36. Never pick a #2 ruck in his own side to start as your fantasy ruck. Mumford’s numbers from last year were bloated by getting easy kicks during big Geelong wins, he’s going to have to work a lot harder for possessions at the Swans. I personally don’t like Sewell this year due to him returning to a strictly defensive role with Sam Mitchell‘s return to midfield, so I don’t think he has upside (-0.5). The forward line is too old, with Johnson, Harvey and Staker all probably on the downward slide, so I’ll dock (-1) for tending on the geriatric side. 7.5/10
Next victim…. I mean candidate is Jugganaut, who didn’t record his cash reserves.
Brendon Goddard, Brian Lake, Michael Johnson, Andrew Mackie, Harry Taylor, Nick Malceski, Daniel Talia
Phil Davis, Jake CarlisleGary Ablett jnr, Joel Selwood, Ryan O’Keefe, Bryce Gibbs, Rhys Palmer, Tom Scully
Anthony Morabito, Ryan BastinacDavid Hille, Robert Warnock
Jackson Trengove, Nathan VardyAdam Goodes, Nick Riewoldt, Matthew Pavlich, Jarrad Waite, Barry Hall, Kyle Reimers, Gary Rohan
Trent Dennis-Lane, James Podsiadly
Okay, maybe a few too many key position backmen but in SC that’s not so bad. Another trio of rookie starters spread over three positions, I sense a trend forming here. Eurgh… what is that smell coming from the ruck division? That is godawful. Warnock (-1) is not startable at this stage given the uncertainty over the ruck depth chart at the Cardboard Cave. Reports from the Essendon intra-club match speak of Hille (-1) swearing like a trooper (presumably from pain) with a visibly reddened knee while playing at full forward. He’s not a fantasy factor early this season as he rides the rollercoaster down, though he may be a good “buy low” target later. Similarly, Waite (-1) is unlikely to burst out of the gates even if he does play early, and he’s best left as a midseason pickup. Reimers… hmm, maybe I’ll let that one through to the keeper. Rohan (-1), though, will not play early and may not play this year at all according to coach Roos. Finally, there is no good reason for ROK to be in the centres (-0.5). 5.5/10
Last of all from the forums, we have Aidans Blues who also didn’t record his salary cap remainders.
Chris Newman, Corey Enright, Lindsay Gilbee, Luke Hodge, Tadhg Kennelly, Rick Ladson, Brad Sheppard
Lukas Markovic, Phil DavisBryce Gibbs, Scott Pendlebury, Bernie Vince, Brock McLean, Dustin Martin, Jack Trengove
Luke Shuey, Ryan BastinacMatthew Kreuzer, Aaron Sandilands
Matthew Lobbe, James CraigColin Sylvia, Nick Riewoldt, Matthew Pavlich, Kurt Tippett, Jarrad Waite, Patrick Dangerfield, Jack Ziebell
Scott Gumbleton, Luke Tapscott
Not a hell of a lot wrong with this side. Its captain options are numerous but perhaps not at the highest possible level, though maybe he’ll get lucky with his choices. This squad is a little too solid, in that a number of its keepers aren’t quite at absolute premium status and aren’t likely to get there. I still don’t like Waite (-1) and Tippett (-0.5) to start with. It’s asking a lot of Ladson and Sheppard to hold up in the first eight games or so. Otherwise, this is a side set up to win a league and not to challenge for any broom-broom cars. 8.5/10
Now let’s move to the Fanplanner and pick three teams at random from the last 50 completed teams. The first one has $57,500 left.
Simon Goodwin, Greg Broughton, Sam Fisher, Luke Hodge, Beau Waters, Matt Maguire, Jackson Trengove
Jeromey Webberley, Stewart CrameriGary Ablett jnr, Brendon Goddard, Ryan O’Keefe, Jobe Watson, Daniel Kerr, Jack Trengove
Dustin Martin, Michael BarlowDean Cox, Aaron Sandilands
Matthew Lobbe, Ayce CordyNick Riewoldt, Matthew Pavlich, Brent Harvey, Lance Franklin, Sean Rusling, Trent Dennis-Lane, James Podsiadly
Jack Watts, Scott Gumbleton
I’m glad this team came out of my random picks because it illustrates a point where I think the mainstream of fantasy footy thought is a bit wrong-headed. Apart from playing Goddard and ROK out of position for no good reason (-0.5 and -0.5), the centres are too top-heavy which means way too many unreliable cheap and rookie options left to start in the backs and forwards. I’d rather have the likes of Martin starting than TDL or Trengove. Sure, you can look at that Ultimate Dream Team from this year’s Prospectus and how it started with four 90+ premiums and two mid-pricers, but that’s with the benefit of hindsight. Here in the real world of the present, I don’t think you need more than two 100-or-over-priced premium centres for captaincy purposes, and the rest should be mid-pricers. Under the above structure, you’re relying on the highly unstable Waters and Maguire along with a couple of kids to fill three starting spots, and similarly in the forwards with the oft-injured Rusling and too many talls for comfort. I know the mid-priced centres are a bit light on this year, but surely there is better value in moving ROK and BJ to their natural position, which is not the centre. I have to dock for starting Waters (-1), Maguire (-1), Rusling (-1) and Podsiadly (-1). 5/10
Brendon Goddard, Corey Enright, Shannon Hurn, Nick Maxwell, Luke Hodge, Nick Suban, Levi Greenwood
Phil Davis, Jeromey WebberleyJoel Selwood, Brett Deledio, David Armitage, Callan Ward, Jack Trengove, Dustin Martin
Jake Melksham, Ryan BastinacMatthew Kreuzer, Shane Mumford
Robert Warnock, Matthew LobbeNick Riewoldt, Shaun Higgins, Mark LeCras, Kurt Tippett, Patrick Dangerfield, Jack Ziebell, Chris Yarran
David Astbury, Luke Tapscott
No, I still don’t like The Mummy (-1) in there and a slightly more expensive premium as prime captain would be handy (-0.5). This side has some interesting uniques though, so I like it on the whole. LeCras and Yarran… hmm. Not sure about them. Worth a shot though. I am sure some people will see Maxwell in there and expect me to arc up about it, but he’s fairly solid as a back keeper in SC. 8.5/10
Last but not least, this one has $24,000 in the bank.
Brendon Goddard, Corey Enright, Tadhg Kennelly, Colin Garland, Rick Ladson, Josh Hunt, Brad Sheppard
Mitch Farmer, Jackson TrengoveGary Ablett jnr, Bryce Gibbs, Chance Bateman, Bradd Dalziell, Rhys Palmer, Jack Trengove
Dustin Martin, Ryan BastinacDarren Jolly, Matthew Kreuzer
Robert Warnock, Matthew LobbeAdam Goodes, Nick Riewoldt, Shaun Higgins, Brent Harvey, Cyril Rioli, Barry Hall, Austin Wonaeamirri
Phil Davis, Trent Dennis-Lane
I don’t expect Wona (-1) to play early. Other than that there’s a lot to recommend this sort of side. The NAB Cup AFL Record, via their anonymous expert Mr Fantasy, is a big supporter of Garland (-0.5) for some reason. I can’t see it myself. Sure, he scored well in his one game last year before getting injured and he’s got a generous 40% discount, but his 2008 was terrible for fantasy purposes with full TOG. I suppose if Jack Grimes is going to move into midfield then someone needs to take up the slack, but is it going to be a tall? Big call based on one game. Along with Bateman (-0.5) there are still some non-premium players whose upside I would question. 8/10

Monty here is my team atm;
Nathan Bock, Luke Hodge, Lockie Henderson, Josh Hunt, Levi Greenwood, Jay Nash, Matt Maguire, (Dlyan Grimes, Jackson Trengrove)
GAJ, Paul Chapman, Joel Selwood, Matthew Pavlich, Matthew Broadbent, Tom Scully, (Jack Trengrove, Jarrod Kayler-Thompson)
Brad Ottens, David Hille, (Robbie Wornock, Wayde Skipper)
Nick Reiwoldt, Johnathon Brown, Brent Harvey, Steve Johnson, Lance Franklin, Barry Hall, Mark Williams, (Jack Watts, Scott Gumbleton)
I was wondering if you had any tips for improvements (considering ruck/back is a little (or alot) weak).
I was toying with the idea of dropping Chappy for Luke Ball and upping either Ottens to Sandilands or Hille or Drew Petrie, losing a multi-pos player

My two Zimbabwe cents…
bigrig – Ball looks good for SC, sack Hille – pay attention to what m0nty has said in both his ‘Rate My…’ articles and at injury lists = 9 changes to your team.
darcyd – ur light in the rucks, replace one of wells or burgoyne (impact players, not massive ball winners) for someone of more value.
magpies76 – listen to the Coaches Box. And read both ‘Rate My…’ articles.
Quicksta – your team is a bit 2000 and late on – Grimes, Krakpot, Higgins & Sylvia – unless you see the same improvement again this year. And listen to the Coaches Box for 3 other changes.

Monty I think you will find that Hille was swearing during the praccy match due to disappointment at the way he was playing, if he was in any sort of pain he wouldn’t have been playing.

February 6, 2010 at 6:21 pm
Based on the comments on ROK/Tippett you do not consider MPP to be any advantage.
The ability to substitute between lines, reducing risk and increasing flexibility is a valid strategy.
Since pricing is relative to MN less discounts choosing one player over another for the same price is just preference (although upside should be considered it is less relevant for guns such as ROK, Goddard etc).
A lot of experienced players still have fixed views on team line up, rigid thinking on positions and have dismissed MPP as a gimmick.
Luck with injuries, form and suspensions does play a big part in this game and the ability to reduce the risk from these factors should not be dismissed so quick.
My 2 polynesion pesos worth….

February 6, 2010 at 7:17 pm
I must say that I agree with Resch. The ability to substitute between positions is definitely of some value. I personally wouldn’t say that the coaches who choose to take advantage of the flexibility that MPPs now provide are doing so “for no good reason”. But yes, this is only my two cents’ worth and just how useful this new rule will be is anyone’s guess.
m0nty
February 6, 2010 at 7:19 pm
Resch, I do consider multi-position players to be an advantage, but not in the first half of the year.
I set this argument out in the podcast. When do you get the vast majority of your donuts? In the second half of the season. That’s when MPP is far more important. There are a handful of MPP rookies who might provide excellent rookie cover as downgrades from your cash cows. That is the time that this rule will come into its own.

I’ll review everyone’s sides now. If I don’t mention immediate replacements, might I suggest looking over my structure post – I know it’s only for DT but there are a lot of shared players.
https://m0nty.wpengine.com2010/01/21/2010-dream-team-structure-1/
bigrig: I’d reconsider Bock seeing as he’s had a modified preseason due to big surgery. Same thing for Stevie J. Chappy and Pav are wasted in the centres seeing as you have seven forward keepers already, that’s bad structure. Willo is a big risk for mine, but it’s not a terrible one. I’d drop Chappy (upgrade Willo to him mid-season), put Pav in the forwards for Johnson, buy Ball and upgrade Hille. 6/10
darcyd: I’m still going to dock you for Waters. Wells is a huge risk when you also have injury-prone Ablett and Burgoyne in those mids, I foresee donuts. 8/10
magpies76: Moore and Smith starting in the backs, two bad ideas at this stage. Charman also not good to start. Forwards are a little heavy with Polkinghorne benched. I won’t say this often, but this team needs a little cash shifted from the forwards to the backs. 6/10
mcpies10: This is a pretty good team. I’m still very wary of starting a rookie back this year. If you can scrounge some cash to upgrade that 7th spot to a Hunt or Ladson, somewhere around there, you’ve got something. 9/10
Quicksta: I don’t like Kerr this year at all, plus you’re starting Farmer too. Sell Kerr for a rookie and upgrade that 7th back spot. Wait, what’s that I see in the forwards? Ryan… Murphy? AAAAHHGHGHGH GET IT OUT GET IT OUT!!!! 0/10
XXNATHANXX: Raines, surely not again. Once bitten, twice shy. I can see you’re a brave man since you’re starting Judd… you’d better be sure Shuey is playing! I hate your entire ruck corps, so congratulations on that. Medders I hate also. Watts starting, hate that too. Stefan Martin, he gets my vote of hatred. You’re turning me into Sauron, Natho. My being is consumed with implacable rage. 2/10
ANTMANS: Not a bad side, but I would quibble with Wona, Rusling, Wells and Cotching. Wona is injured, Rusling may not play, and the other two are injury risks to add to GAJ and Burgoyne. I would try to concentrate on fitter players in the mids.7/10
bazza16: Hille, Rohan and Waite may all miss round 1 and beyond. Otherwise not bad, if perhaps lacking enough top-quality captain options. 7/10
dmdunne: Starting Sheppard and Watts is not my preference, plus I’m not a Hurley fan given his fitness. Move Higgins and Dangerfield forward, buy another centre rookie and see if you can find some money to upgrade Sheppard. 6/10
saliba29: I would check on Harbrow’s fitness, he’s run into a leg/knee problem this week. I’d prefer Hunt over Waters. If you’re going with Tippett I’d put Lobbe in the forwards in place of Rohan and get a 77k ruck rookie to set and forget. Don’t like Rusling either. Otherwise a fine structure. 8/10
mammalian: If you’re starting a rookie-priced back in SC it has to be Maguire, anyone else is way too risky – and Maguire is very risky anyway. No to Hurley. Vickery is an interesting one, if it comes off you’ll look like a genius! Long shot though if Simmonds doesn’t go down. 7/10

$17,300 left over, I think 3 crows in the forward maybe a little to much but Phil Davis is going to make some good points this year and is cheap, Taylor Walker is also going to have a great year as he is looking very good at training and as good as Tippet in the forward line, He doesnt have the height but does have great speed and has put on a lot of muscle over the pre season.

sprarepart: Jamison, can’t say I like him as a unique. Bower was good last year but Jamison will be stuck playing close-checking defensive roles.Ziebell I would prefer in the forwards. Hille I would prefer out of your team. Farmer is very iffy as a starter. Some good uniques in that team though, it has potential. 7/10
In There: The Big Setant, geez, massive call. He could give your team the kick up the coit that it needs, or he could get it booted out of contention. Glass, Hahn, Miller… LEIGH BROWN??!? Dude, your team is a potato factory. Your centres are too top heavy and your forwards are execrable. Delete and start over. 0/10
Hommus: I declare this team to be tasty as a lamb kebab. My only quibble is in starting TDL, but the rest of the team is full of tzatziki flavour so I’ll let that go. 10/10
mannop: Charman, no. Starting Watts, dunno about that either. I think you might have to downgrade one of your keepers so you can upgrade those two. Fairly good otherwise. 8/10
biggooters: That is a very guns-and-rookies kind of side but I think you’ll find that there is a lot of value in mid-price players this year, especially in the backs and forwards. Six starting rookies is at least three too many. Plus there’s Hille. Take a long hard look at your structure and go back to the drawing board. 4/10

Hi Monty
I would be keen to know yours thoughts on my side and I have $3,400 left in the bank
Backs: Goddard, Hodge, Hurn, Waite, Kennelly, Ladson, Greenwood, Maguire, Davis. (Have Maguire on the bench to cover Ladson or Waite if they dont pull up early)
Mids: Goodes, J. Selwood, Dalzeill, Burgoyne, Trengrove, Martin, Morabito, Bastinac. (Tossing up on Goodes could be a bit on the downward slide but haven’t seen signs of it yet.)
Rucks: Clarke, Kruze, Trengrove, Lobbe (at least one of if not both should start for Port)
Forward Roo, Slyvia, Higgins, Franklin, Tippett, Hall, Ziebell, TDL, Tapscott. (gone with hopefully lots of upside with only Roo as the true premium)
What are your thoughts?

I’ve had a play around and this is what I’ve come up with so far. In terms of emergency’s, there is nothing set in stone until after NAB Cup. My main concern is on a lack of Captain Premiums, so I might need to swap out Swan for Ablett.
I’d appreciate any feedback about what I have so far.

burner09: Fairly good team apart from Seaby and Davis. Downgrade one of those centre starters to Trengove or Martin, and upgrade those two positions. 8/10
dan667766: There is a lot of hype around Polak but I can’t see him playing enough to be worthy of a start. Moss is still a rookie. Garland and Seaby are ordinary options. I think you’re a little top-heavy in the centres so there’s room to move cash out of there. 6/10
bmcdougall: You’re lacking a top-line captain option, plus I don’t like Waite from the start. Downgrade Waite and upgrade Goodes to Ablett or another 115 premium. 8/10
saborn: Swan is good enough for a captain. I can’t find a hole in that team, to be honest. Your structure is excellent. 10/10
Fattys: This side piques my interest because it includes no starting rookies, yet it’s not bad. I am not enamoured with the amount of stay-at-home forwards you have with Hawkins, Walker, Williams and Yarran. Atkinson and Rich are valid uniques. This team will probably do well in early rounds but will struggle later in the season due to a lack of cash cows. I would think about starting a centre rookie and redistributing the cash into your forwards to buy more midfield-oriented smalls. 9/10
macattack: Not sure I like Mayne as a unique, plus Polak is a mirage imo. I would sell Masten for a rookie and upgrade those other two. 7/10
greenbaron: Trengove is highly likely to get dropped for Chaplin in R2 so don’t start him. I wouldn’t trust Gumby. I wouldn’t trust Drummond either, he’s your best candidate to downgrade to get the cash. 7/10
Daniel_79: I have been hearing bad things about Power’s preseason, which has been nearly nonexistent. Sell him for a rookie and upgrade Gumby and Charman. 7/10
tappy22: Broken record time – Sheppard starting, Hille, Hurley, Gumby starting. Sell one or two of those centre keepers to fund upgrades. 4/10
Sams Town: Marc Murphy is not startable early due to his injuries. Sell him for a rookie and upgrade Sheppard and Gumby. 7/10
doug23: Waite and Hurley, that’s too much injury worry. Neagle as your seventh forward, hmmm… okay, I’ll allow that. Thornton as a unique is quirky. Overall I think this side has too many injury and selection concerns. 7/10
