A select few squads received the magical 10/10 rating in the recent Rate My Dream Team comment threads.
First, I’ll list the two teams out of dozens and dozens that had no marks taken off under my marking system, which consists of me giving 10 marks to start with and then subtracting marks for bad player choices or structures that are poorly thought out.
Bartel (posted February 6)
Original review: “While I personally wouldn’t have many of your players, I respect your choices and I can’t see anything wrong with your side structurally, except perhaps for a lack of a second 115 captain (though that’s minor).”
Brendon Goddard, Grant Birchall, Lachie Henderson, Tadhg Kennelly, Matthew Broadbent, Simon Buckley, Rick Ladson
Brad Sheppard, Phil DavisLeigh Montagna, Joel Selwood, Scott Pendlebury, Luke Hodge, Jack Trengrove, Dustin Martin
Luke Shuey, Ryan BastinacMatthew Kruezer, Kurt Tippett
Robert Warnock, Matthew LobbeNick Riewoldt, Adam Goodes, Jonathan Brown, Matthew Pavlich, Lance Franklin, Adam McPhee, Patrick Dangerfield
Trent Dennis-Lane, Luke Tapscott
DoctorE (posted February 11)
Original review: “That is a fine looking squad you have there. Stylistically, I personally wouldn’t be taking the chance on two mid-price midfielders like that, and I think there may be scope for you to downgrade one of your premium backs to fund an upgrade or two. If Armitage and Redden do come off, though, you have an outstanding platform for 2010.”
Goddard, Corey Enright, Andrew Carrazzo, Hodge, Marcus Drum, Kennelly, Broadbent
Josh Hunt, DavisGary Ablett jnr, J. Selwood, David Armitage, Jarred Redden, Trengove, Martin
Shuey, BastinacDarren Jolly, Kreuzer
Warnock, LobbeN. Riewoldt, Pavlich, Shaun Higgins, Franklin, Jack Ziebell, Polkinghorne, Dangerfield
Tapscott, Dennis-Lane
There are a number of mistakes that kept cropping up again and again with the submitted teams.
Don’t pick injury-riddled players. I can’t remember the amount of times I had to take marks off for the likes of Scott Gumbleton, Jarrad Waite, Michael Hurley and Beau Waters. Even if they do make it to round 1, it’s a poor decision to buy them anyway, because they don’t have the fitness base over the preseason that their competitors for spots in your team have enjoyed. Think Franklin of last year.
Don’t pick players who are LTI. Xavier Clarke, anyone?
Don’t skimp on your starting rucks. I have heard people hemming and hawing about whether to choose David Hille, Brad Ottens or Nic Naitanui. The answer should be: none of the above! Fantasy coaches have been sucked in by the Troy Simmonds story of 2008. No, I don’t think there is a Simmonds type in this year’s crop. Shell out the clams for two premium rucks and hope to God they don’t fall victim to LTIs.
Don’t pick mid-priced key position players. This is a rule that can be broken sometimes for up-and-coming CHFs such as Tom Hawkins or Josh J. Kennedy, but the likes of Ryan Schoenmakers, Colin Garland, Mitchell Brown, Tyrone Vickery and Lachlan Hansen just don’t have enough upside for their price to make it all the way to premium status.
Don’t pick spuds. I would have thought this would be self-evident, but some teams included the likes of Michael Newton, Chris Tarrant, Alan Toovey and Nathan Jones. Bleurgh.
Don’t get too enamoured of the new dual-position rule. Yes, it is going to be handy, but not in your starting side in round 1. You should be looking to exploit this rule towards the second half of the season, when the donuts start rolling in. Don’t pick the likes of Goddard or Goodes in the centres, especially if you haven’t got a matching mid-priced dual-position player to swap with them.
Don’t start a rookie anywhere other than the midfield. The only possible exception to this rule would be Maguire in the backs and Rockliff in the forwards – who are rookie-priced without being rookies – but otherwise I can’t see any of this year’s draftees outside the centres being startworthy.
Don’t skimp on your captain choices. I am seeing a lot of coaches who expect the likes of Bryce Gibbs and Joel Selwood to shoulder captaincy duties from round 1. This is a mistake. At least one midfielder from Bartel upwards is mandatory to ensure a 110+ captaincy average.
Enter your teams in the comments below and I promise to eventually rate all of them (though only once per coach). Please, format them as I have listed above in that 8-line style, and take out the prices so they don’t take up 60 lines.

@ All the whinging peanuts
You just dont seem to get it,when Monty is rating these sides,i dont think the selection of player ( spuds aside ) comes into calculation. It is rated to structure and overall balance of the team.

Beau Waters broke his elbow, the surgical complications of an injury like that are similar to a knee with less margin for error. Brent Harvey is a very fortunate man to come out so fit.
I don’t see much difference between Beau and Shaun Higgins of this time last year. They both had orthopedic injuries, Waters has taken an extra year to get it right. He’s had a fragment removed from his knee but he’s still played half a preseason match and scored 50 points while the rest of his team was smashed and he couldn’t find his touch. He was a standout in their intra-club match and a leader at the club.
The things you need to be saying about him are that he puts his body on the line too often, he throws himself into contests that could very easily see him scrubbed out, with the new head high contact, or flattened out by a poorly executed bump.
Shannon Hurn is the rebounding Eagles defender with soft tissue injuries.
How is Kennelly’s shoulder? He would have needed a reconstruction at the end of his last season, did he have the time off to do it properly when he was playing Gaelic?

westhoff39: I would downgrade Masten to a rookie and upgrade Naitanui. A little top-heavy in the mids without a genuine 115 captain, but otherwise I can’t fault you. 8.5/10
Kobe_10: I don’t like your captain choices, you need someone at Bartel’s price or higher. 9.5/10
flame: I love Roughie as a player but I don’t think he’s a DTer. Maybe for SC. Good everywhere else. 9/10
bigadz: I don’t like Seaby for DT, and Dempsey is a big injury risk. This is another team that struggles for top-shelf captain choices too. 7.5/10
saber05: I still don’t like Ottens. I’m still docking a point for whoever picks him. You guys know this by now. 9/10
papbomber: The structure in this team is solid but unspectacular. I just think there isn’t enough upside in the likes of Armitage, LeCras and McPhee to propel them to premium status. You might win a league with this team but you won’t win the car. 9.5/10
kyle9600: Cousins and Kerr are both poor picks, especially in DT. Plus NicNat and JJK, are you an Eagles supporter? Too many homer picks, if so. 7/10
wobblin2: I would prefer selling Mackay and Ward for another starting mid rookie plus a gold premium in that structure. 9.5/10
stoney23: No on Hansen. I’m a fan of Houli, but only for SC. 8/10

I dont care if you dock points for 3 midfield rookies as i believe this is the way to go in 2010. I don’t think there is one decent rookie outside the midfield. I will rotate the 5 rookies depending on form but all of them have potential to average 70 .

I laugh at everyone that picked Armitage and Masten. Armo will not play 22 games, he’ll burn out towards the end of the season and i think he’s sure to get dropped at some stage. Masten’s scores sure look good in the NAB but they’ll drop once it gets to the real thing. He has 25 possie games for about 75-80 points, which means he’ll never be a true premium but you’re paying a price tag.
At best they’ll both end up at the 350k price tag and will not be in the winner’s team.

Thanks for the feedback monty.. after I posted that team above I actually made a fair few changes…
Grimes for Duffield, Malceski for Kennelly, Maguire for Davies, Ball for Armitage, Banner for Lucas and Hall for McPhee (after seeing his performance against Port.
Obviously Ball and Hall have much more room for big scoring than the likes of Armitage and McPhee.. although I’ve decided to leave LeCras in for now.

Hey all.
The way I see it is, I’m not gonna win the whole thing. I just wanna beat my friends come the finals.
My midfield is super weak, with players who I’m sure will all go up in price (With bias to Richmond players of course).
All I want is players who are sure to go up in price
I like my whole team except just think I need to trade the gump K Bradley.
Who for though?
Will Hunt go up in price??
I’ve got 290k to spend on a backman I would love some advice

So this is my team. I know my midfield is absolutely rubbish. I don’t mind dropping a few games early on.
Backline Carrazzo, Hodge, Gilbee (year of the dog), Geary, Bradley, Henderson, Ladson
Bench Sheppard, Andrew Moore (Will Moore play a game?)
Midfield Cousins (if hes gonna have a year, this is it), Dalziell, Cotchin, Palmer, then the top four draft picks
Rucks Cox, Sandilands
Bench Warnock, Lobbe
Forwardline N Riewoldt, Higgins, Giansiracusa, Franklin, Zielbel, T Varcoe

Shell out the clams for two premium rucks and hope to God they don’t fall victim to LTIs.
why have you said thi i have chosen hille and ottens in my rucks and have waite in my backs. why should someone not pick players such as hille i understand the point about otens were he is quite a large risk but not sure about hille has been a proven proformer before his injure and with the dons list should get games.

hey monty, love your articles, they’ve been a great help. can you please rate my dream team???
B: C Enright, A Carrazzo, L Hodge, H Shaw, T Kennelly/N Malceski, R Ladson, J Hunt, B Sheppard(Emergency), J Trengrove(Emergency 2)
M: B Gibbs(CAPTAIN), J Selwood, D Armitage, M McVeigh, J Trengove, D Martin, M Barlow(Emergency 1), L Shuey(Emergency 2)
R: M Kreuzer, K Tippett, R Warnock(Emergency 1), W Skipper(Emergency 2)
F: N Riewoldt(VICE CAPTAIN), J Brown, L Franklin, C Rioli, R Gray, J Zeibell, B Hall, G Rohan(Emergency 1), S Gumbleton(Emergency 2)
I have $122,600 left in the bank, but i’m not sure what to do with it. The reason I went with Gibbs/Selwood as my captain is because I believe they are both due for huge years. Also not sure about Kennely or Malceski. And lastly I went with Skipper as one of my emergencies instead of Roughead or Lobbe. I did this because Taylor’s recent injury means Skipper will be a definate for the 1st few rounds and will give him a chance to cement a spot in the Hawthorn team.
If you could rate this that would be great.
THanks mate!!!
