A select few squads received the magical 10/10 rating in the recent Rate My Dream Team comment threads.
First, I’ll list the two teams out of dozens and dozens that had no marks taken off under my marking system, which consists of me giving 10 marks to start with and then subtracting marks for bad player choices or structures that are poorly thought out.
Bartel (posted February 6)
Original review: “While I personally wouldn’t have many of your players, I respect your choices and I can’t see anything wrong with your side structurally, except perhaps for a lack of a second 115 captain (though that’s minor).”
Brendon Goddard, Grant Birchall, Lachie Henderson, Tadhg Kennelly, Matthew Broadbent, Simon Buckley, Rick Ladson
Brad Sheppard, Phil DavisLeigh Montagna, Joel Selwood, Scott Pendlebury, Luke Hodge, Jack Trengrove, Dustin Martin
Luke Shuey, Ryan BastinacMatthew Kruezer, Kurt Tippett
Robert Warnock, Matthew LobbeNick Riewoldt, Adam Goodes, Jonathan Brown, Matthew Pavlich, Lance Franklin, Adam McPhee, Patrick Dangerfield
Trent Dennis-Lane, Luke Tapscott
DoctorE (posted February 11)
Original review: “That is a fine looking squad you have there. Stylistically, I personally wouldn’t be taking the chance on two mid-price midfielders like that, and I think there may be scope for you to downgrade one of your premium backs to fund an upgrade or two. If Armitage and Redden do come off, though, you have an outstanding platform for 2010.”
Goddard, Corey Enright, Andrew Carrazzo, Hodge, Marcus Drum, Kennelly, Broadbent
Josh Hunt, DavisGary Ablett jnr, J. Selwood, David Armitage, Jarred Redden, Trengove, Martin
Shuey, BastinacDarren Jolly, Kreuzer
Warnock, LobbeN. Riewoldt, Pavlich, Shaun Higgins, Franklin, Jack Ziebell, Polkinghorne, Dangerfield
Tapscott, Dennis-Lane
There are a number of mistakes that kept cropping up again and again with the submitted teams.
Don’t pick injury-riddled players. I can’t remember the amount of times I had to take marks off for the likes of Scott Gumbleton, Jarrad Waite, Michael Hurley and Beau Waters. Even if they do make it to round 1, it’s a poor decision to buy them anyway, because they don’t have the fitness base over the preseason that their competitors for spots in your team have enjoyed. Think Franklin of last year.
Don’t pick players who are LTI. Xavier Clarke, anyone?
Don’t skimp on your starting rucks. I have heard people hemming and hawing about whether to choose David Hille, Brad Ottens or Nic Naitanui. The answer should be: none of the above! Fantasy coaches have been sucked in by the Troy Simmonds story of 2008. No, I don’t think there is a Simmonds type in this year’s crop. Shell out the clams for two premium rucks and hope to God they don’t fall victim to LTIs.
Don’t pick mid-priced key position players. This is a rule that can be broken sometimes for up-and-coming CHFs such as Tom Hawkins or Josh J. Kennedy, but the likes of Ryan Schoenmakers, Colin Garland, Mitchell Brown, Tyrone Vickery and Lachlan Hansen just don’t have enough upside for their price to make it all the way to premium status.
Don’t pick spuds. I would have thought this would be self-evident, but some teams included the likes of Michael Newton, Chris Tarrant, Alan Toovey and Nathan Jones. Bleurgh.
Don’t get too enamoured of the new dual-position rule. Yes, it is going to be handy, but not in your starting side in round 1. You should be looking to exploit this rule towards the second half of the season, when the donuts start rolling in. Don’t pick the likes of Goddard or Goodes in the centres, especially if you haven’t got a matching mid-priced dual-position player to swap with them.
Don’t start a rookie anywhere other than the midfield. The only possible exception to this rule would be Maguire in the backs and Rockliff in the forwards – who are rookie-priced without being rookies – but otherwise I can’t see any of this year’s draftees outside the centres being startworthy.
Don’t skimp on your captain choices. I am seeing a lot of coaches who expect the likes of Bryce Gibbs and Joel Selwood to shoulder captaincy duties from round 1. This is a mistake. At least one midfielder from Bartel upwards is mandatory to ensure a 110+ captaincy average.
Enter your teams in the comments below and I promise to eventually rate all of them (though only once per coach). Please, format them as I have listed above in that 8-line style, and take out the prices so they don’t take up 60 lines.

Hi Monty. This is a bit off-topic, but I’ve only recently signed up to your site and aren’t sure how to chat with you and others. A question for you or anyone who knows the answer. It seems the heraldsun is currently witholding the SC scores from the NAB challenge games. The fantasyfreako newsletter only had DT scores. According to Glenn Luff at championdata, the heraldsun have these scores, but can decide whether or not to publish them. How is it that you are able to provide DT/SC scores for the NAB cup, but not for the NAB challenge games? Do you think we will get access to the NAB challenge stats and SC scores at some stage?
Thanks for any help.

Hi Monty… made a few changes to my original squad, which you scored 8.5.. let’s see if I’ve nailed it.
BACKS: Hargrave, Enright, Duffield, Hodge, Greenwood, Kenelly, Hunt (Davis, Davies)
MIDS: Ablett, Boyd, Armitage, McVeigh, Martin, Barlow (Bastinac, Lucas)
RUCKS: Sandilands, McIntosh (Warnock, Trengove)
FORWARDS: Riewoldt, Gia, Franklin, McPhee, LeCras, Ballantyne, Dangerfield (Rockliff, Dennis-Lane)
I must say I was guilty of the Waite inclusion before posting this.. but I changed to the safer option of McPhee. Also looking at Hall for that 4th forward position after a strong NAB.. but that could end badly.
Note that I have $54k left in the kitty and I plan on getting Goddard after he hopefully drops to a more reasonable price.
Cheers

WOW, a perfect 10 for a team that has a player on the bench with a LTI in Tapscott and numerous players in the back line who more likely than not won’t even see senior footy in RND#1. Impressive, but giving every1 else bad advice Monty still won’t allow you to wim DT overall!

Good post monty, really enjoy your blogs.
A few points:
Waters: Definately not a starter, but given the lack of back rookies I would have said he was one of the better options (besides McGuire) in terms of scoring potential. Who else would you recommend… Trengove? (likely 30 avg) Webberly? (wont play) Mitch Farmer (maybe…?) O’keefe… Davis…. From where I stand McGuire and Waters are easily the best options at this stage, with Mitch Farmer third.
David Hille played well in the nab challenge on the weekend by all accounts. Scored 65ish IIRC. Not bad for a first hit out for a big man after a knee. Did plenty of ruckwork too apparently. Given the Essendon forward situation, I’d have said he was a good chance to score well even if he plays at FF all year. They are gonna have to score goals from somewhere right?…. As a Hawthorn fan, you would know Mark Williams fires about once every 4 weeks or so. Maybe I am still scarred from deciding not to take McIntosh last year….. Slighlty off topic, I reckon Paddy Ryder might be an excellent pick this year also. Really matured last year, and did well up forward on the weekend in the second half.
Anyway, thats what I reckon… Beauty of this game is there is no correct answer until the end of round 22!

Monty, how can you not take off points for a spud like kennelly and then write off beau waters. Kennelly has never averaged over 66 in a 8 year career what makes everyone think he’s going to get any better. Waters average 80 in 07, is 50k cheaper and up until a couple of weeks ago they were saying he was super fit. Plus those teams have got half a dozen players who are not certain starters. Does a player lose marks for running around in the reserves. Your system dont make sense to me brother.
S_Coach99
March 5, 2010 at 12:13 am
Whopper, I agree. Kennelly will go up a little, but is more safer. Waters is slightly more a risk but if he stays fit will make much more cash. I guess the difference is waters will most likely be a bench option, Kennelly will most likely be a starter, but for 50k less(s/c wise), i think Malceski is back…..or Ladson/Hunt (even cheaper).
Having said that, Id feel safer starting Kennelly over Waters

Whopper: think about it. Kennelly is fully fit, has spent a year building his confidence playing non-contact Gaelic footy, playing halfback in a side that needs outside runners. Waters has a history of soft tissue injury, hasn’t played home & away from 18 months, looked terribly rusty on the weekend, and has been moved away from the lucrative halfback line to become a small forward, a position which is death for fantasy (e.g. Pestinko).
