I got 2391 in SC which isnt a bad effort considering I had Roo and tippet on the ground, and I stupidly picked Goodesy over GAJ to capatin this round. I only did that once before to a fit GAJ and he got 206. Should have not been so silly.

I’ve already traded out Roo for Rioli

My back line gave me 805 pts – helps when blokes like Goodwin, Hodge and Malceski all go big

A few months ago, a fellow Supercoach came to me with some strange claims about how every AFL game in SC seems to add up to around 3300 pts for the 44 players playing in each of the 8 games per round.
Today I did some basic accounting by adding up the totals of each game – Fanfooty.com.au was the source. And they do all add up to 3300 within a maximum – of 11 pts.

    3301 pts Geel – Freo
    3300 pts WB – Haw
    3297 pts Mel – Adel
    3311 pts Syd – Rich
    3299 pts Carl – Ess
    3302 pts PA – BL
    3304 pts Nth – WC
    3303 pts StK – Coll

I have no idea how this is worked out? I know that Champion data supply the HeraldSun with the stats feed. I haven’t compared this Dreamteam stats. How can each game with so many variables like injuries, game time, weather, ground sizes allways add up to approx 3300 pts? Beats me.

League ranking going from 1 to 6700 isn’t very nice haha =P I hope we’re still on top when afl.com sorts it out. Other than that the reiwoldt injury brings up a number of options (perhaps you can write a blog on the choices available m0nty?) and tippet probably has to go, but if you’ve got him in the rucks there’s no-one to go to! What a bad year for rucks hey, 4 in the top 8 price-drops.

Harvrave will be very popular in 2 weeks

About Tippet, the Roo – Rioli trade left me an agonising $600 short of the required $$ to trade out Tippet for Sandilands – not happy Jan – thinking either Kreuzer or Ryder, maybe Macca dunno. Not gonna touch those Sydney recyclables – they are gonna be like a hand grenade

Jolly looks like he isnt fitting in to Collingwoods ever evolving stoppage play system. They dont really stop much – just keep the ball moving ever so slowly.

oh and chucknorris thats how supercoach is set up to work. The points are allocated based on each players influence on the game rather than actually allocating a certain score to each stat. Therefore if you were the only bloke on the ground in theory you’d get 3300 even if you only have one kick.

  11. chucknorris

    April 11, 2010 at 10:55 pm

I may just leave Tippet on the bench and cover him with Warnock, maybe his slump will end and his injury is a small one. I know a bloke who’s copped Heath, Roo, Bock, Dangerfield,Gibson and the obligatory Tippet. He’s considering just throwing in the towell. Coulnt really blame him with that news.

I didnt know that. Seems a little weird dont you think. As far as I knew, each player got points for good possies and minus for bad ones
    Effective kick 4 Points
    Ineffective kick 0 Points
    Clanger kick -8 Points
    Handball effective 2 Points
    Ineffective handball 0 Points
    Handball clanger -6 Points
    Handball receive 1 Point
    Hardball get 4 Points
    Loose-ball get 4 Points
    Goal 8 Points
    Behind 1 Point
Mark uncontested (maintaining possession) 1 Point
Mark contested (maintaining possession) 6 Points
Mark uncontested (from opposition) 4 Points
Mark contested (from opposition) 8 Points
    Tackles 4 Points
    Free kick for 4 Points
    Free kick against -6 Points
    Hitout to Advantage 3 Points

So this isnt it DT?, there is more on top of this??????????????

“Unlike other games, Herald Sun TAC SuperCoach uses Champion Data’s exclusive stats system to assess each player’s contribution to your team. At the end of each match, Champion Data will calculate players’ final ranking and this score will be added to your team’s total”

  14. DT=Life

    April 11, 2010 at 11:03 pm

Yeah its very complicated how it works but there are considerably more statistics involved including the state of the actual game score when these stats are recorded amongst other things. It is possible that after calculating all scores they are simply standardised and rounded so that they reach 3300. I personally don’t play SC and champion data keep the formula as a closely guarded secret so that is as much as I know.

  15. gools

    April 11, 2010 at 11:03 pm

In laymens terms they do it as a scaling tool to adjust a players score according to his impact on the game rather then pure possessions – so they can take points off players with cheap possies and add points to players with important ones, so you get an idea of the players worth as to their slice of that 3300 But thats a topic for another discussion!

Didn’t have roo but the gibson injury hurt me

  16. gools

    April 11, 2010 at 11:06 pm

the 3300 figure was a figure they came to after analysing a heap of games and that was usually the average amount of points they found they’d allocated. an example of the scaling is duffield today got a huge bonus for kicking the last “winning” goal even though his score wasn’t close to 140 odd

  17. DT=Life

    April 11, 2010 at 11:06 pm

Example of how it may work:

    (3300)/(total player scores in match)=y

y * players original score = players final score.

  18. chucknorris

    April 11, 2010 at 11:09 pm

If you have an X and Y axis grading system – teams like Richmond u would be well advised to stay well away from – I need to do some more research – it may have some serious flaws

  19. chucknorris

    April 11, 2010 at 11:11 pm

The Crows are in for one tough year.

  20. gools

    April 11, 2010 at 11:17 pm

they have some magic numbers which they times points by according to the time of the game and circumstances of the possession. too complicated to bother worrying about, its designed to favour players who will get important possies rather then junk stats

  21. hawk_88

    April 11, 2010 at 11:30 pm

    @chucknorris

3300 is the key SC number. As they have said, the scoring system is design such that each game adds up to 3300. There is no flaw in this part of the system I assure you.

This is what is called normalisation in statistics. It assumes each match is equal (which in AFL it is, each is worth 4 points on the ladder). Therefore by normalising the scores, it accounts of various variables like weather/wind, size/shape of the ground etc. Basically anything that could make it easier or harder to register a stat during any given match.

DT=Life’s formula is exactly how it would be calculated, however the actual raw scores (before they are normalised) are calculated in a much more complex way than your list. Factors that are taken into account include period of the match, scoreboard pressure, effectiveness of disposal as well as some very subjective factors like “winning goal” and difficulty of disposal.

There are many other factors that make the SC scoring system more complex (and in my opinion better) however that is the explanation of 3300. The scores weren’t all exactly 3300 due to rounding errors as each score has to be an integer.

Shocking week (worst weekly ranking I remember having in 4 or 5 years of DTing). A captain who scored 20, a mere 3 century makers (Harvey, Pav and Hodge), lots of underwhelming scores, Morabito on the bench outscoring EVERY mid on the ground including Bartel… really bad week.

The “good” news is that I “only” have Riewoldt, Bock and Heath Shaw injured, plus Clark and Ballantyne facing the tribunal. Ballantyne’s report was a joke but Clark might get a week off. That could be a good thing, he gets a week to build fitness, and I get another week to see how the rucks are shaking out while Clark’s price is frozen…

Hopefully Shaw is back, Bock’s injury is short-term. Jonno Brown is the obvious Riewoldt replacement for me, doesn’t seem much reason to be adventurous on this one.

    April 12, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Imagine if your starting team had all of Hargrave, Bock, Heath Shaw, Riewoldt, Dangerfield, any two non-Sandilands rucks, one or more forwards out of Tippett, Lockyer, Davis, Didak, Stevie J, Fev…. throw in an injured or underperforming mid like Black or Cassissi, and you would totally give up. And yet your team would have looked quite good in pre-season!

    April 12, 2010 at 12:55 pm

I got 2351 with Riewoldt captain and Ablett VC and Shaw on the bench. Last week I had Swan skipper and if I had Ablett skipper both weeks, I would be in the top 10 in SC overall. Spewing.

Horrible round for me – 550 less in SC than last week. Bock, Hargraves, Tippett, Dangerpants and Roo. Wow.

I did some research on dangerfield’s injury, and it seems like he will be out for 2-4 weeks, depending on how bad the sprain was. No serious damage thank God.

The reason I like the AFL DT better than SC…
AFL DT has live scores, – you can watch the game and know when a kick is a kick and a tackle is a tackle. SC you have to wait for the next day for the results to come through!

I reckon AFL footy is a f.ckin joke. These clubs go out at the start of every season and say they’re destitute (or broke like PA) yet they’re players are being paid upwards of $600K a year. Soi Jimmy in West Footscray scraping in his puny $600 a week pay packet to pay the mortgage and feed his wife and kids goes and pay the Bulldogs $160 a year so he can go to the footy, and the club can pay Griffen $450K a year. A f.cking con. And the AFL sits on the media money like it’s it own dr.g stash. It’s a vehicle for elites to pillage at will. Anderson that little c.nt is a poster boy for this sh.t. Whilst poor west footscray Jimmy thinks Smorgon is looking after him, when in reality, if Smorgon couldnt use the club as a tax write off – he’d be out the door. It’s a scam.

Footy players are by and large – planks. they’re worth 20 bucks an hour – anything on top of that is excessive. Pay em nothin- let em out of lock up on weekends to play, then throw em back in their cell with a consenting girl a pizza, and a slab of beer. If they harm the girl – burn em at the stake as pre game entertainment the following week. That would sort any behaviour problems in 2 weeks.
