FanFooty Tutorial: Drafts

Preseason Draft
Each coach in a FanFooty fantasy league may choose 18 players to have on his or her squad, taken from the real AFL player lists. Choices are made in order by each coach in a pre-season draft held among all coaches in the fantasy league. Note that once that one coach has chosen a particular player to be on their squad, no other coach in that league may draft that player - there are no duplicates within the same league. Your commissioner may have set up an offline draft, in which case he or she has devised the rules and will upload everyone's team lists all at once. If your league has an online draft, the format is a simple "serpentine" draft where each coach is given a random pick in the first round. For the second round, the coach who got last pick in the first round is given first pick in the second round, the second-last coach in the first round is given second pick in the second round, and so on until we come back to the coach with the first pick in the first round, who gets last pick in the second round, and then first pick in the third round, and the process starts again. The picks go back and forward until everyone has picked.

While you are mostly free to draft whoever you like, there are two special rules for preseason drafts. The first is that you may only draft ONE (1) defence, and you MUST draft one. Since there are only 16 defences in the AFL, this rule is designed to ensure that everyone can get a defence to play on their team. If you have not drafted a defence when it comes to your last pick (in round 18), you will only be able to pick a defence. For a similar reason, you may only draft TWO (2) ruckmen. There is a serious lack of depth in the ruck position, epsecially in fantasy leagues of 10 or more teams.

To illustrate how the draft is ordered, consider a ten-team league where the coaches are called Anna, Barb, Carl, Dave, Edna, Flic, Gary, Hans, Igor and Judy. Let's say for argument's sake that those are the order in which the random picks are given, so that Anna has #1 and Judy has #10. The draft picks would look like this:
