Griffin vs. Ward vs. Treloar

The introduction of Griffen poses many questions for those considering a Giant for round 1.  Will he become the number 1 tagged Giant?  If so will this free-up Ward/Treloar and boost their averages, or will Griffen take points from them?  Do you see any of their averages declining/not moving?

With the GWS early-draw considered among the easiest in the league will you take a punt on one of the above?

Why/Why not?

I don't think teams usually tag those giant ruckmen, and Griffin probably won't get many games anyway.

Unless of course you're talking about Ryan Griffen... ;)

Personally I'm gonna stay away from all of the GWS mids to start with just to see how the points get shared around. Ward, Griffen, Treloar, Greene, Shiel etc makes it a very good midfield, not sure which one will do the best.

Griffen will get tagged, he's too good not to. But that won't "free up" Ward and Treloar because they were never tagged to begin with.

You're right, Ward was only tagged 7 times last year (according to Monty's game comments), I thought it was almost double that.  I assume Treloar will receive a lot more attention this year though, he was only tagged a few times last year.

Either way, I assume each are more likely to move down the 'must-tag' pecking order now that griffin is in the midfield.

Do you think Griffin's presence/influence in the middle will curb their possession numbers?  Or boost them?

...come on meow, puttem on the block.

Treloar isn't worth tagging at all. He lacks accountability and isn't much of a 2-way player. Teams will be happy to put someone head to head with him and back in their guy to do more damage on the rebound. If Leon wants the GWS mids to improve then Treloar has to fix this, but it will come at the expense of a few possessions. I've crossed him off my list.

Ward is pretty much unstoppable due to his attack on the ball. Anyone who has more contested possessions than uncontested is a gun. He averages 25 touches a match so theres little to no room for improvement. You should get what you pay for though. Griff won't make a difference.

Toby said in an interview that he's looking to do more damage in the forward half. I don't know if that means more time spent up forward, or if he just wants to be more potent while there.

Josh Kelly is the one I like the most. Could keep flying under the radar and average 90 in the first half of the year and as a forward priced at 68. Should have been 2nd in the rising star.

Interesting thoughts on Treloar.  Me thinks if he is top 3 in GWS possessions/impact (behind Griff and Ward) and is only in his 3rd year he would be first to tag merely in terms of it being an efficient use of resources (since most tags on Griffin and Ward wont be overly effective).

That said, a tag or two in GWS's crazy spread of talent would arguably be pointless with the likes of Greene, Shiel, Coniglio, Smith, Whitfield, Scully or Kelly to step up.

Hard not to agree re Josh Kelly.  My bet is he will be a great POD this year, but I dont have the guts to back him with that midfield to compete with.

On a side note, which future midfield do you prefer, the above GWS midfield or GC's Ablett, Swallow, Bennell, Jeager, Prestia and Jack.  IMO we are seeing the making of the greatest midfield to play the game at GC atm (assuming Jaeger's knees hold up).

Treloar wins enough of his own ball that a tag wouldn't be super effective anyway. Devon Smith should be the one that gets clamped down on even though he's not a true midfielder. In time it will be Kelly or Whitfield.

I prefer the grunt of GWS over the class of GC. Not to say that GWS don't have class, LW and JK are all class too. Scott Clayton seems obsessed with drafting the same type of players, Garlett is another example this year too. It's why they went out and got a B-grade inside mid like Hallahan. Lonergan was meant to help but hasn't worked out. GWS's inside mid quality gives them the edge I reckon. I also think GC are missing a big piece of the puzzle in the ruck.

Ward is a contested beast. I had him this year as a POD and he was incredible

If you have to pick one, it has to be Ward or Griffen

Ward by a fair margin. I think he will be in the top 12 mids this year and a 120 average isn't out of the question.

I reckon Greene will average more than Griffen and Treloar too.

R.Griffen

Griffen, Treloar, Ward

Guys like Greene, Scully, Kelly, Coniglio and Shiel is better for the guys above unlike the Western Bulldogs only having Macrae, Boyd, Libba and Griffen these other midfielders at the giants should be able to help out more meaning I think will help Griffen's scoring
