Miller can play the small forward role so I don't think his place will be contingent on O'Meara alone.

Loved him at the u/18 carnival, Vic Metro captain and is a fearless competitor. Can see him grabbing this opportunity with both hands and holding his place. Risky for sure but I don't see too many others with ironclad security. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut and I'm firmly on the Miller bandwagon. Big bodied mids usually make the transition fairly seamlessly and he also tested really well at the combine. The only factor which may change my thinking is if Essendon players get rubbed out for more than 5 weeks.

I think he will play a bit of footy if he performs has excellent defensive side, GC need another small to complement matera, hall and the like have been serviceable but none have locked it down...

I did a best 22 for the Suns the other day and came up with this

Broughton May Lemmons/Saad
Cannon Thompson Malcho
Harbrow Gaz O'Meara
Bennell Lynch Matera
Day Dixon Martin
Smith Prestia Swallow
Rischa KKolo Stanley Sub (Hallahan?)

Nicholls will be in while Dixon is out injured as the resting ruck.

Lynch is also out for round 1 suspended, I think Day is also carrying something but they are completely different players to Miller. If Miller was to play he would need O'Meara, Gaz or Martin to miss. I noticed Hall and Sumner played mainly due to the injuries to Martin, Bennell and Matera. All those guys are healthy at the moment so for Miller to get games I think O'Meara has to miss. This is the problem when you have a team full of first round draft picks.....

Hmmm, good analysis, has got me thinking a bit. Will have to see who else is available.

The problem I have with doing these best 22 comparisons is that teams rarely ever get their best 22 on the park

Miller has a bench spot locked for me if his named rd1, which I expect he will be

Of that group who is injured at the moment?

Well obviously JOM and GAJ, but how often does a team go unchanged week to week? Sooner or later someone gets injured or rubbed out

Thought long and hard about this and I'm picking him. Ignoring the fact that he was a gun junior I'm prepared to hold him even if he is dropped for whatever reason. We now have 3 bench players so having a loophole could be highly advantageous. I'm not suggesting that I want this to happen but it won't be the end of the world if he makes way for some more credentialed players. Of this I'm certain, he will play enough football this year to appreciate in value, that's ultimately all that matters. One can't cash in all the rookies at once so having a slow burner is perfectly acceptable.

Analysing the fixture the Suns have no Friday night games leading into the bye period and play plenty of Saturday night fixtures. That means he will be useful even as a loophole option. For those considering Cripps, Boekhorst or Lambert, this could be an ideal partnership if Miller finds himself on the sidelines. Essendon play a lot of early games too, Laverde or Kavanagh would also work well with this set-up.

Welcome aboard Touk Miller.

Would it be fair to say that most of us think Saad and McIntosh are the only 2 def rookies who seem like playing round 1?

I know Hamling and Goddard are a chance (Hopefully Goddard comes in later to give us a downgrade target) but I don't think we could actually pick either of them to start the season

With that being said, I'm confident Saad will hold his spot for a while, but what are we thinking about McIntosh?

Could we get away with fielding Saad or N Brown, and have McIntosh on the bench too, or should we go deeper down back, pass on McIntosh (fearing he might be in and out) and just have Brown and Saad on the bench?

I had a look at the Tiges best 22 the other day and they have maybe 1 or two spots available  that aren't in Green with Newman out (depending if they play both Hunt and Pettard). You would think he would be in contention for one but it might depend on how serious the heart thing is.

Edwards is the other with Dalgleish if the Dons get a few suspensions but the job security is poor.

I have noticed a bit of talk on Oxley but I don't know how he would fit in since I haven't looked at the Pies 22 that closely. Smedts/Bews are the other two at about 200k but I don't think Bews will score well and Smedts is to big a risk.

I was contemplating going with 2 rookies on the field if Hamling gets named. It means I will field Saad/McIntosh, save a ton of dough and then have Hamling and Brown on the bench. I would rather do something like that then fork out 120k more for someone like Macmillan who might average 20-30 points more but that 120k could mean I can afford Jack Steven in the mids and have a back up plan for Bellchambers

Bully

I would pick McIntosh over Hamling but that's personal preference, I think both have looked really good and could feasibly play a string of games early. Hamling was sub last week but still managed to put up a very decent score. I'm strongly considering both at this stage along with Saad. Nathan Brown is still a good pick but he doesn't excite me in the slightest. Mature age players from the Cats are generally worth their keep.

Hamling is key position right? I remember hearing they don't want Morris playing on the key position guys anymore which is a reason they went and got him. Rough has one spot locked down and you would think it is between Talia and Hamling for the other one

RaisyDaisy

Guys like Edwards, Dalgleish, Oxley don't really interest me at all

I'm really trying to focus on getting rookies who have the best chances of holding their spot and making money.

In years gone by we pick a rookie because they are named rd1, only to have them get dropped shortly after and I don't want another Georgiou scenario down back, which is why most of these guys don't interest me even if they play

Hamling reminds me of Laidler last year. Could be a surprise who holds his spot and plays a bit, but could get dropped.

At this stage Saad and McIntosh are the only 2 I'm comfortable in picking because I think their long term prospects are the best

@Mat, I'm not touching Smedts or Bews. Goodes is our man for a cheap defender

I'm hoping I can start Goodes at D5, with Brown Saad and McIntosh, but I am also wondering if we need to go deeper and start Goodes at D6 and then just having 2 of Brown, Saad or McIntosh on the bench
