Was just thinking about this. CEY has big scoring potential but a possible sub risk. It's a bit of the old 1 in the hand vs 2 in the bush.  ;)

Of the other 2 I think I prefer Vand if not sub.

I like Charlie Cameron for the council worker vest but we shall see.

nah, his work-rate isn't there...

Yeah I don't think CEY will get the vest but you never know. Risky wanting to field him, unless you have the cash to bring in a NVB/Cockatoo

Tough one. I'll have that call too. Heeney vs CEY vs Vanders.. if Brayshaw avoids vest I might just bring him in for Anderson and bench CEY

Miller vs Vandenberg? Vanden seems to have the better JS but still unsure on which. My other mid rookies are Brayshaw, Cripps, Heeney, Cey and Cocky

Here's Herald Sun's take on who they think will start with the vests this week

Heppell seems an odd choice

MELBOURNE: Dean Kent â€" underdone and should be eased into battle.

GOLD COAST: Jarrod Garlett â€" creative forward with speed to burn.

SYDNEY: Jake Lloyd â€" started as the sub in five of his 21 games last year.

ESSENDON: Dyson Heppell â€" like several Bombers has had limited match practice.

BRISBANE: Jaden McGrath â€" small and speedy midfielder who has substitute written all over him.

COLLINGWOOD: Jordan de Goey â€" debutant who showed plenty during the NAB Challenge.

WESTERN BULLDOGS: Mitch Honeychurch â€" Expect assistant coach and retired specialist substitute Daniel Giansiracusa to present Mitch with the vest pre-game.

WEST COAST: Jackson Nelson â€" versatile Eagle making his debut ... just screams substitute vest.

ST KILDA: Jack Lonie or Adam Schneider - it’s a toss of the coin proposition... leaning towards the veteran having first crack on the field.

GWS GIANTS: Josh Kelly - get a good look because he won’t be the go-to substitute very much longer.

ADELAIDE: Jarryd Lyons - expect Cam Ellis-Yolmen’s blistering NAB Challenge to see him avoid the vest.

NORTH MELBOURNE: Ryan Bastinac - experienced campaigner whose cool head under pressure could come in handy when the game hangs in the balance.

FREMANTLE: Tommy Sheridan - on the right track but yet to cement his spot in the best 22.

PORT ADELAIDE: Angus Monfries - no match practice under his belt works against him here.

I'm surprised Heppell is playing TBH, coming off knee surgery only a few weeks ago. He won't be starting sub, but wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with the red vest.

I would say that Gleeson is odds-on to be sub.

CEY should avoid the green vest. Hoping Lonie does as well but not the end of the world if he gets the red vest.

Wouldn't shock me is Roos gave the green vest to Brayshaw. He shouldn't but we said the same thing about JKH last year.

Just curious, if Vandenberg and or Heeney starts as the sub today are people still going to pick them? I would think that I would still pick both of them, but just have them on the bench this week.

Also, I've been looking at the other teams and just seeing how some of the rookies fit it.

I'm quite confident that Oxley will hold his spot, just as long as he does enough and isn't a nightmare. I know people are concerned about The Seed returning eventually, but there are a lot of fringe players in their line up so there are several players that could be dropped before Oxley. He just needs to play well, and seeing as he played all 3 NAB's, has been at the club for a few years and is starting in the 18 I'm happy to roll the dice and select him for D8

Miller is another one that have a lot of people weary of picking him, and rightly so. I've had him locked on the bench all pre-season, and he currently sits at M11 with Lambert being removed. Looking at the GC line up, O'Meara is the obvious out that will come straight back in, and based on their team for today, you have to think that at this stage Miller or Garlett makes way for him

I think whoever does better between them two likely hangs around and the other makes way for JOM. I've followed Miller closely, and even with his spot obviously looking up for grabs, I truly believe he will manage to play at least 7-8 games in the first half of the season which is enough to make cash on, and being my M11 I am going to stick with him and pick him. Being the cheapest available playing option, I think it's fine to take a shot with M11

CEY is a hard one to predict. Grigg and Martin just missed out so they can easily get into the side, and then there's both Crouch boys too. I know Brad will be a while so that helps CEY, but not sure about Matt. Lyons is in the squad too, so if CEY performs better than him at least, then he should hang around. He was named as an emergency several times last year, and after his NAB performances I'm going to back him in to get a good run at it this year, so he gets M10 for me

Looks like Heeney has got the nod over Titch for now, but Towers in the side helps too I think. Heeney a lock. If he starts in the green, then just sits on my bench this week. Same goes for Vanders - all the hype around him and being elevated means he should get plenty of games

As for the expensive rookies, like most I already have Cripps, and I think that's enough for me. I cant see all of Cripps, Newton, Brayshaw, Sheed and NVB turning into must haves who pump out massive scores every week. I think at this stage I am happy to just go with Cripps, and if he doesn't perform then just sideways him to the best performing 200k option. I will most likely have Cockatoo in my side, so if I truly just had to have 1 of these 200k guys it shouldn't be too hard, but I'll go with Cockatoo for now because he fits my structure $ wise, and I think his JS is solid

As for the forwards, it was looking like we were going to have so many options, but now it seems Hogan, Lamb and Lonie are the only cheap options. I've got all 3 at the moment, but am seriously considering dropping Lamb (Should have good JS but wont score heaps) moving Gray into the forward line and bringing in another rookie, which would be Cockatoo

de Goey is a hard ball player. Why you'd only want that in the last quarter is beyond me. Typical HS shower stirring to bump circulation.

Big Mac

What concerns me is that every mid rookie I have is a big chance for the sub each week - I could turn Cockatoo into Newton but I'm still uncertain

honza

I'm fattening up my mids bench to get around subs. Non issue IMO.

no eye deer

Well cheers RD, you just made me feel a lot better! ;D I've gone exactly the same with my mid rookies, only difference being I already have Cocky.
