So I figure that over the next month or so I am going to be making a million changes to this team, like we all are, so I just wanted to start my own thread here, and it will be cool to see how the final team lining up for Rd 1 looks like compared to now when I start.

I'm sure it's going to be different!

This is my very first crack, which I put together in 5 mins, so I haven't really done enough research as of yet, but this just gives me somewhat of a foundation to start with

DEF: Kade Simpson, Brodie Smith, Michael Hibberd, Shannon Hurn, Beau Waters, Brendan Whitecross (Wigg, White)

MID: Gary Ablett, Scott Pendlebury, Joel Selwood, Jobe Watson, Angus Brayshaw, Isaac Heeney, Aaron Vandenberg, Nathan Freeman (Steele, Neal-Bullen, Lambert)

RUC: Nic Naitanui, Matthew Leuenberger (Bellchambers)

FWD: Brett Deledio, Brendon Goddard, Lance Franklin, Dane Swan, Mitch Clark, Jesse Hogan (Goddard, Krakouer)

$6,100 left

I haven't even looked into the byes yet which I'm sure will add more changes, but at this very early stage I think this structure is what I will start with

Ablett and Pendles are locked in the mids, not negotiable, while Deledio, Buddy and Swan are locked in the fwds. All other players are open to be removed/added

swans15

Maybe Bennell in for Franklin. Really think he will break out this year.

Money Shot

Very good team for this early stage.
I would consider moving Belly into the forward line for Krakour and then put a dpp as your third ruck!
This would mean that you would have Belly playing over Hogan and still have the same cover.
Very good team non the less.

RaisyDaisy

Cheers guys

Swans15 - not going to start Bennell over Buddy. Reckon Bennell could break out too, but Buddy is a lock for me

Money Shot: The problem I have with that is that having a ruck at R3 who doesn't play might not work out a lot, because I might not find out that my starting ruck is out until before the game, and my R3 or Belly could have already played so I wouldn't be able to swing them anyway. I just posted in the Ruck thread in the Strategy section explaining this, as I think we need to have a playing 3rd ruck this year, even though I don't like it, having all that cash just sitting there

fasttrack13

Lock Smith mate!!! And 75/25 for hibbo aswell!
I get the ruck thing there, it will be interesting to see what plays out. Im a fan of set and forget now

AaronKirk

Having a quick look it'd probably be better to have Belly as F4 to start and a cheap DPP ruck at R3 so you can swing the cheapo/Belly.

Probably means you would need to downgrade either Deledio,Swan or Goddard to Bellchambers, pick a cheapo at R3 and then upgrade a mid rookie to one of Lids, BJ or Swan.

I'm not a big fan of starting Simmo at his price, I think Walker maybe better value (depending how mick plays them) but with Carlton having the round 11 bye he could very well be a decent pick - one of them a lock. Round 11 bye premiums are pretty thin, while round 12 is severely stacked.

Agree with AK on Simmo. He's such a rollercoaster that he is the perfect upgrade target. Will have to watch Walker carefully through preseason and practice games. If he lines up across halfback then he is a lock

RaisyDaisy

Thanks fella's

Simmo can put in the odd stinker no doubt, but you just know your going to get a 95 avg come seasons end, and he never misses games

Have tweaked around with things now and have come up with this

DEF: Kade Simpson, Brodie Smith, Michael Hibberd, Shannon Hurn, Beau Waters, Brendan Whitecross (Matthew Dick, Harrison Wigg)

MID: Gary Ablett, Scott Pendlebury, Joel Selwood, Josh P Kennedy, Jobe Watson, Isaac Heeney, Aaron Vandenberg, Nathan Freeman (Jack Steele, Alex Neal-Bullen, Kane Lambert)

RUC: Nic Naitanui, Matthew Leuenberger (Mason Cox)

FWD: Brett Deledio, Lance Franklin, Dane Swan, Tom Bellchambers, Mitch Clark, Jesse Hogan (Hugh Goddard, Nathan Krakouer)

$31,100 remaining

Strong defence. Love the first 4 in defence. Hopefully Waters can have an injury free season and Whitecross dirt cheap.
Strong mid. 5 premos and 3 starting rookies is a good mid setup. Good to see that you have Watson and especially JPK as many don't have him and if those two start off strong, then you'll have a clear advantage.
standard ruck.  Will be interesting how luey will go martin in the side.
solid forward. I'm not a fan of belly but thats just me.

Love your side RD. Big fan of your defence and midfield! :D

Nice team RD

Def: I'm really struggling to pick defenders this year, I think largely because the difference between top players is so marginal (10 points between no.2 and no.21) so there's no clear picks. I think I like the idea with the defence but not so sure on the players exactly. Don't think Hurn represents much value and unlikely to be a top defender, Hibberd and Simmo I would pick one and a different prem. Both very consistent but rarely pull out big scores, I'd be more inclined to take a gamble on someone else. Though again I can't say who... Helpful, huh?  ;D

Mid: I reckon Rich is almost too good to ignore for 350k in the midfield. Agree with nperera that Watson and JPK might be nice POD starters and if they start with a bang you're away, equally though if they start with a stinker or two then you're behind the pack. I would pick one to go for Rich and free up 200k to play with - my pick would be keep JPK and ditch Watson.

Ruck: nothing to say here.

Fwd: Nice. Probably my favourite line in the team as far as scoring and moneymaking balance is concerned. Only comment is on Swan -  I have him too but I'm not sold on him, basically I think the argument is that if you can pick a player who's an ex overall no.1 SC scorer in the fwd line then by crikey you do it. 5 years prior to last year he's been good for ~120 so why not take the punt? But his role has certainly been modified and I'm not convinced he can get back up there...

It is early days, but one thing I notice is the amount of rookie listed players you have, while some may get upgraded and play its unlikely they all will.
What that then does as you get closer to the season change the structure of your team since you need to lose a premium or mid price player to find the coin to upgrade them.
One thing I try to do at this time of year is pick the expensive rookies, that way, even if you dont go with them you can shuffle them around easier and pick a premium combination that suits byes etc much easier.

RaisyDaisy

Thanks for all the comments lads :)

Kiwi - Heath Shaw is the other defender I am looking at, and he can easily be switched for Hibberd etc. Even as an Eagles supporter I've never picked Hurn, but he is priced at an 86 average and I think he can push low 90's, but also now being named the new captain of the club I reckon that will get him involved even more and it's worth the shot based on his price

Kiwi and SR - By the looks of things at this stage, there are going to be a lot of mid rookies who should get games early, which is why I have gone with 5 premo mids as opposed to 4 and a fallen like Rich. If anything, I could remove JPK or Watson for another rookie if there is an abundance of them starting Rd1, and use that cash elsewhere, but I think for now this team should be alright until we start to see NAB begin

Oh, and I reckon Swan is the biggest lock in SC this year Kiwi  :)

ben_020285

Very nice looking side mate.

Your defence is very strong. Personally I've gone the extra premo in my fwd line instead but can't fault your choices here and it hasn't impacted your midfield.

Your mids look awesome. One thing to keep in mind is that Ablett, Pendles, JPK and Watson all share the same bye.

Your rucks look good. I'm going for a similar setup with Nic Nat and Kreuzer at the moment.

Your forwards look good. As I said earlier, I have gone for an extra premo instead of the backline but that's just me. I'm not a fan of Buddy as he misses too many games through injury or suspension but I can see why many are picking him as he is an SC beast at his very best.

RaisyDaisy

Thanks Ben

The one thing I haven't done yet is look into the byes, so once I do that (might do it now actually) I will then make changes to make my side more bye friendly, but keep the structure the same I think, for now

OK so I've looked into the byes and need to make 1 or 2 changes

By the time round 12 comes around every team will have Ablett and Pendles anyway, so I'm going to keep Jobe as my 3rd premo rd12 mid, which means JPK needs to go, which is a shame because I think he is underpriced, but Jobe is even more underpriced

Who do I pick to replace JPK? Here are the options

Sloane
Dangerfield
Beams
Cotchin
Libba
Ward
Griffen

I don't know what it is, but I just never pick Cotchin lol. I'm leaning towards Sloane as a POD but would love to hear peoples thoughts. Has to be someone from the above list, no one else

The other concern I have is having Buddy, Swan and Bellchambers all having the same bye too. I either swap Buddy for someone else, or just go with the 3 and assume that I probably would have upgraded Bellchambers by rd12 anyway so its not a problem

Now, I can change Buddy to Gray, but that means only Dangerfield, Cotchin and Griffen are options to replace JPK. Cant afford Sloane, Beams, Ward or Libba if I change Buddy to Gray

Sloane and Buddy vs Dangerfield and Gray? Kind of leaning towards Danger and Gray...
Thoughts?
