I honestly don't see the problem with ossie's original idea. Why change anything? I thought it seemed interesting and, if it doesn't work well, we can fix it for next time...

Reckon he wouldn't mind Mewtwo, as still in the infancy stages of how to draft and whatnot. I'm curious as well :P.

Hey Os, mind if I pitch an idea? I know it's your competition and all but I think it could be improved.

of course

I'll randomly select 1 team from each of the 8 groups to participate in one of the 6 drafts ..... k?

think so
not sure still confused a bit by it all

only thing i was trying to work out was if say
Australia has group A and so on

is that why certain continent are filling up faster then others

as in ppl go oh africa has group X which contains teams pies, dockers, suns

lets go there to get ablett, pendles and fyfe

(note: example only  know it wasn't worked like that also hope my post makes sense nd your able to see what i mean or i've just confused my self even further for no  reason which is most likely...lol)

The main issue I have with competitons like this is that it relies too much on luck with such small squad sizes. Whoever gets GAJ has a huge advantage. There is a way to even it up after a few rounds, and it would make the competition more interesting IMO.

Round 1 - 8 groups of 6 - 5 matches in a round robin tournament - bottom 3 teams in each group eliminated.

At this point there should be a draft for all eliminated players. If GAJ gets eliminated and is sitting on the sidelines for the whole year it takes something away from the comp, plus who doesn't love a draft?! The team that scores the least points but makes it through gets pick 1, the highest scoring team gets pick 24. Round 2 is seeded based on total points scored. The comp might have to pause in AFL round 6 while the draft is taking place. The amount of group stages and finals system would be pretty easy to work out depending on how many teams you want eliminated at each stage.

As squad sizes increase, so should the number of players required on field. In the second round of this there might be 7 on field. The grand final could be the only match that requires a full XV of players, in positions. Will add an element of skill to this. Could add stipulations for each round, for example in round 3 you might have to play a ruck, forward and defender.

Round 1 (AFL 1-5) - 5 on field - 48 teams - 8 groups of 6 - 5 matches in round robin, bottom 3 teams eliminated
Round 2 (AFL 7-9) - 7 on field - 24 teams - 6 groups of 4 - 3 matches, bottom 2 teams eliminated
Round 3 (AFL 10-14) - 9 on field - 12 teams - 2 groups of 6 - 5 matches, bottom 2 teams eliminated
Round 4 (AFL 15-21) - 11 on field - 1 group of 8, 7 matches - top 4 teams advance (1v4, 2v3)
Preliminary finals (AFL 22) - 13 on field
Grand final (AFL 23) - 15 on field

Won't need the week off for the draft in the latter part of the season since there won't be as many teams involved.

Love the idea meow, but would need a serious time constraint to get this done within a week drafting wise.

Egypt please, I want Egypt, because Egypt has pyramids, I want our nickname to be, The Pharaohs, and I want our guenseys to be Melbourne design (made out of polyester) exept I want to replace the red with Black and the NAvy Blue with yellow, also I would like to be manufactured by Nike and have Hungry Jacks as a sponsor as well as shmaccos. Thanks lads.

Welcome newbie :) Been on this site before? Cos you have Biff as an assistant, welcome aboard :)

It's a mate of mine who was having a laugh, I think he's serious about it but I'll ask him later.

In between rounds 1 and 2 there would be a week off, plus not every player has to be drafted at that point since on field teams are only increasing by 2 players.

In between 2 and 3 there will be only 12 teams, and maybe 4 rounds of picks. I think it's possible, maybe there could be a designated draft hour one night, and if coaches can't make it they could get someone to fill in. Eliminated coaches can become co-coaches or assistants.

LaHug

Hate the idea, meow. If you were set to make the next round with a game to go, you would definitely tank for a better draft pick. Also, if GAJ were eliminated and gets picked up by the 24th best team, they may well become the best team. Meaning that, when seeding happens, the team that finished 1st is hugely disadvantaged by having to play the team that just picked up GAJ.

It's definitely an interesting concept, and I wouldn't mind joining. I'll take South Africa thanks.

I don't mind Os' original idea with drafting in groups of teams, or the idea of locked in players with the rest of the group being random. I don't think we should be doing a full draft with all 48 teams though.
