Pick # 1: Paddy McCartin

Born: 19/4/1996
Height: 194cm
Weight: 95kgs
Drafted from: Geelong Falcons
Position: Key forward
Plays like: Jarryd Roughead

ST KILDA has selected power forward Patrick McCartin with the first pick of the 2014 National Draft.

McCartin is marginally taller than Nick Riewoldt, and significantly taller than the Saints two most famous forwards, Darrel Baldock and Tony Lockett.

Like Riewoldt, McCartin was born in Tasmania but moved interstate as a child, creating a name for himself as a prodigious young forward at Geelong Grammar and the Geelong Falcons.

In 2015 alone, the teenager played for four separate football teams; the AIS, Vic Country, his school and of course the Falcons.

While he possesses a handy burst of pace and an accurate kick for goal, McCartins greatest attribute is his velcro like hands.

In this regard, hes not too dissimilar from Geelong star Tom Hawkins, because even when he is caught out of position, his vice like grip on the ball is rarely broken. While hes measured, caring and down to earth off the field, he isnt the type to hesitate if a defender is parked 20 metres in front of him.

Its this aggressive side to McCartins game that has made him such a valuable commodity at junior levels. Simply standing in the goal square he has a presence which is as rare as the very talent he has.

McCartin is the Saints first number one draft pick since Brendon Goddard in 2002 and just the second top eight selection since Raphael Clarke in 2003.

Pick # 21 Hugh Goddard

Born: 24/8/1996
Height: 196cm
Weight: 94kg
Drafted from: Geelong Falcons
Position: Key forward/defender
Plays like: Ben Reid

St Kilda has selected Hugh Goddard with pick 21 in the 2014 National Draft.

A genuine swingman, Goddard boasts great adaptability and can hold down key positions at either end of the field. Like McCartin, Goddard played for Vic Country and the Geelong Falcons this year, but also combined this footy with his school commitments at Melbourne Grammar.

The left footer is strong overhead and registered an elite 2.98 seconds for the 20 metre sprint at the Draft Combine.

He is the second cousin of Brendon Goddard.

Pick # 22 Daniel McKenzie

Born: 17/5/96
Height: 183cm
Weight: 77kg
Drafted from: Oakleigh Chargers
Position: Midfielder
St Kilda has welcomed Daniel McKenzie with selection 22 at the 2014 National Draft.

An athletic midfielder with speed, endurance and agility, McKenzie has versatility to play on small and tall opponents.

The 18 year old amassed 18 possessions and three marks at 89 per cent efficiency against Vic Country in NAB AFL Under-18 Championships this year.

He also finished second in the agility run (8.10 sec), third in running vertical jump (94cm), fourth in repeat sprint (24.02 sec) and equal-sixth the 3km time trial (10:07) at NAB AFL Draft Combine.

Pick # 41 Jack Lonie

Born: 13/8/1996
Height: 174cm
Weight: 67kg
Drafted from: Dandenong Stingrays
Position: Small forward
Plays like: Hayden Ballantyne

ST KILDA has drafted small forward Jack Lonie with pick 41 in the 2014 National Draft.

Lonie reads the the game exceptionally well around goals and has a penetrating left foot. The ex Dandenong Stingray enjoyed a superb 2014 National Carnival and was awarded Vic Country's Most Valuable Player.

He recorded 8.37 sec in the agility run at the NAB AFL Draft Combine and is the cousin of former AFL players Nathan (Hawthorn and (Port Adelaide) and Ryan (Collingwood).

Hoping these 4 boys have a long and successful career.

back from an awesome weekend away and stoked with our new guys

power forward, ultimate swingman, pace and skill, Milney/Schneids hybrid

another great draft 8)

Vinny

Goddard and McCartin are so good for your structure and awesome guys to build a club around.

Although depressed by not getting Racca. I can say I am very happy with the draft outcome.
Shame Neal-Bullen didn't last just 1 more pick. But Lonie should be a good little goal sneak.
And I can feel myself falling in love with Goddard, just this time he won't leave me for a bunch of druggos.
Give McCartin and Goddard a few years to build and we will have a great team to punch into the finals.

So basically we got Hugh Goddard in exchange for Rhys Stanley and Jordan Cunico.
Yeeeep, i'm fine with that one.

Bully

Great draft Saints, I was slightly critical of knocking back 4 & 7 but Goddard is a good acquisition. I really rate Daniel McKenzie, think he could become the prototype rebounding defender, just wait until you see him click into second gear, the kid has some serious afterburners. It was interesting to note that during the repeat sprints his 6th run was much faster than his 5th, only elite athletes can find the reserves to dig that deep. Incidentally his 6th sprint was the fastest time recorded out of the entire field (equalling Jack Hiscox).

Happy with the haul, who do we take in the rookie draft?

Fordham, Kietel, Glenn, Bampton?

my guess would be Bampton. reading around it seems he's the best available, but I don't really know

Worth the risk? He just got shoulder surgery done.
