From Reddit, quoted from Peter Lalor.

"Selectors had earmarked him as the replacement for Chris Rogers when the senior opener retires, but whenever it was suggested to him that the wait was dragging on he would smile and reply that he had plenty of time.

Nobody ever imagined that wasn't the case."
This killed me. :(

Can't believe he's gone. He was my favourite player and it is an absolute tragedy that Phil is gone. He would have gone on to be a great player.

It's tough to believe it all happened really, you just don't expect this kind of thing to happen on the cricket field and to happen so fast.

RIP Hughesy, you had a great knock mate, and you'll always be 63*.

Yep my favourite batsman in the world. A young kid with the world at his feet.

Feels like yesterday he made a hundred in the shield final.

Yes haven't we adopted him as our own :-[  just on the verge of a Test recall as well :-[

Yesterday was such an odd day, full of drama, a young man on the world stage lost his life and many other young men had their new dreams come true via the draft. Mixed emotions to say the least. Poor family has to deal with the fact his birthday was to be Sunday too :-\

I was quite impressed by the A League crowd which stood and clapped and chanted at the 63 minute mark.

Respect.

When sport comes together for a particular tragedy lovely things occur with such sentiment, the outpouring from many sports has been touching to witness.
His birthday tomorrow will be such a tough day. His Dad so proud of him, his Mum in all the interviews just adores him i feel for her i feel for them all.
I hope Abbott is able to take advantage of the support around him and not carry this to heavily in his heart.

from all reports Abbott is holding up quite well, Sutherland said he was very impressed about his maturity. Still, i cant imagine what he's going through, no doubt he will struggle with it for a long time to come. He would be also having some dark thoughts i hope his family and friends continue to rally around him as I'm sure they have done so far

Happy Brithday Hughesy :-\
