Profile

Everything about Brayshaw points to him being a quality AFL player in the future. Sandringham Dragons captain, All Australian, AIS-AFL Academy member, his uncle is James Brayshaw, his dad is the CEO of the AFL Coaches Association and played with Alastair Clarkson, John Longmire and Guy McKenna. Even his grandfather was a premiership player in the WAFL. Having missed the 2013 draft by 9 days, Angus was able to use 2014 to refine his game and was a dominant force at both TAC and Championship level. Aside from gather big chunks of ball he kicked goals in 10/11 TAC games this year and is a tackling beast, as highlighted by his 2013 game vs Gippsland where he amassed a huge 21. At 187cm/86kg he is physically ready to go and seems mentally prepared for the challenge ahead. He needs to work a bit on his stamina and ball use but these are cosmetic issues which will be addressed in time.

Knightmare - Brayshaw with his dual sided kicking has a feel not completely unlike a taller, bigger bodied Sam Mitchell but I see Brayshaw becoming a slightly less dominant Oliver Wines. He is that similar tall, strong bodied midfielder who can do damage by foot and have an impact immediately and be a key pillar through the midfield long term but his production I feel in looking at his numbers will be slightly but not significantly lower than the production of Wines. Brayshaw is round one, season one ready to play. He has the size and production to suggest he can have an impact right away. He can also be a starting midfielder right away but I can see him also receiving some minutes on either a forward or back flank during games as his endurance is not yet quite be up to a level that would allow him to sustain full games at AFL level through the midfield from the outset.

Bound For Glory - Brayshaw's Metro carnival proved to be a solid campaign, starting off with a game high 32 disposals, nine inside 50s and four tackles against a very strong Vic Country side. Brayshaw seemed to work off this performance with more quality performances against South Australia, racking up another 25 disposals and a goal. His other games weren't as impressive, but his carnival overall was a success, proving to recruiters that he is worthy of being a top 10 pick, and possibly going top five. Brayshaw's size and athleticism allows him to play all over the ground. His preferred position is in the midfield, yet he has the ability to create off half back, as well as be a presence up forward if needed. He can also play relatively tall, as he has a good vertical jump and enough strength to compete one-on-one in the air.

Callum Twomey - An ankle injury towards the end of the year saw Brayshaw miss the Sandringham Dragons' semi-final defeat and also sit out testing at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, but he had done enough. He is ready to begin his AFL career. For a start, he gets plenty of the ball. In 11 games for the Dragons this season, he averaged 24 disposals (12 contested) and six clearances. In the under-18 championships, Brayshaw averaged 22 disposals for Vic Metro. At stoppages Brayshaw is hard to stop: he can sense where he has to be to get the ball, and isn't deterred if he gets hit, hurt or blocked in the process. There were plenty of times during the year where Brayshaw copped a heavy knock and looked sore, before dragging himself off the ground and getting on with things. He's added a breakaway burst which separates him from others, and he kicks so well on both feet it's hard to know which side is his preferred (he's a right-footer for set shots and uses his left in general play, if you're wondering). He shows his natural flair around goal - he kicked 17 goals for the Dragons this season - and is a smart, articulate and respected leader who takes his team with him. He knows when to step up and impact a game, and does it often.

Pros - Magnet, AFL-ready, plenty of tackles

Cons - Needs to build tank before being a full time mid

Fantasy Prospects - Nothing is certain in this world but Brayshaw seems like the safest fantasy bet of the 2014 draft. He'll be going to a team that needs him, he has fantastic stats across the board, an AFL ready body and a good head on his shoulders. He's one of the few top draft picks in recent years who I would say is worth the extra coin. The risk of being sub is always there but I don't see it as being as great as some other draftees.

Prediction - 71-75

Toga

Wow, 21 tackles in a game! Amazing! :o

As you say, looks to be a safe bet and can see him really becoming a part of that Melbourne engine room from day dot. Whether or not I'll start him will really depend on how many other rookies are looking like getting games early, but at this stage I think I'm gonna have to lock and load ;)

Nice work again Craigy!

nrich102

Really liking the look of this guy. How likely is it that he used as sub throughout the season?

kilbluff1985

will highly consider if named round 1

Sweetness

All depends on price.
I think I read somewhere the rookies won't be as inflated as much this year (may be wrong) which will make him more tempting.

Nige

In my FanPlanner team, I've picked him over Petracca.

Price won't stop me from picking him, so the only thing stopping me from picking him will be an injury or not being named Round 1, but I hope and don't think either will be the case.

Ricochet

Yeh think this boy will be worth the extra $$$. If fit he'll play
