Profile

When you asked Port supporters about exciting prospects at the club, Newton would often be among the first players mentioned. Unfortunately he suffered knee, hip, groin and leg muscle complaints which stemmed from a serious ankle injury suffered as a junior and in the meantime saw a number of players move ahead of him in the pecking order. Now at Melbourne and seemingly with his body in good shape he could potentially become a cog in the Demons' midfield and begin to rise in value. At SANFL level Ben was a consistent ball winner, rarely at the top of the stats sheet but almost never out of the top 3 either. He's only played one full game of AFL football but there's some signs he can score well, his 40 and 42 came in just a quarter of footy. If Newton's job security looks good leading into Round 1 then he should be considered.

Cons - Lack of AFL experience, sometimes has low tackle numbers
