Exciting is an understatement for this kid. The two best words I can find to describe him are quick and brutal. He may be small, but is very versatile, playing a great range of roles, but particularly enjoying himself in defence, providing lethal bursts up the midfield. Also more than happy to lay a bone-crunching tackle. Averaging 16.2 disposals, 2 marks and 2.6 tackles per game playing for Perth in the WAFL. Needs some development, averaging the highest amount of clangers in the championship, but in the Swans' environment, his potential is too big to ignore. All-Australian in last year's U-18 Championships.

The kid can run fast, and he has endurance. A national 800m runner, he has flourished in an AFL environment. Turned heads at combine testing, with a 16.1 beep test and breaking the 3km time trial record, with 9:18. But he has football smarts as well. I've been impressed when he's been played forward in Swans reserves matches, being very clean below the knees. This coupled with his evasive skills made me think he was a small forward at first! Really thrilled we have this kid, will be very useful for us.

Pick 39. Western Bulldogs - Peter Bampton (Norwood)
                                        182cm, 83kg
                                        Midfielder

Peter Bampton is a brute of a lad, his imposing frame has seen him debut in the SANFL as a 17 year old and do exceptionally well for such a raw teenager. This year he took his game to the next level, playing a vital role in Norwood's midfield and helping his club establish themselves at the top of the table. It was unfortunate for Bampton that he sustained an ankle injury in round 7 because he had just posted a rising star nomination a few weeks prior and was starting to draw some headlines as a potential first round selection. He subsequently missed the u/18 carnival and has seemingly drifted out of recruiters thinking. Personally I think he's a bargain at this point in the draft and believe he's AFL ready, perhaps good enough to replicate the feats of Luke Dunstan in his debut season.

Turning to his football ability, Bampton is a contested ball winning specialist, he hits packs like a raging bull and goes harder and fiercer than most around him. His work off the ball is also packed with brutality, those who are unfortunate enough to be in his path inevitably feel the pain, he's what I consider the perfect player to take into a hotly contested finals campaign. His kicking and general ball use is also greatly underrated and despite appearing like a relic of the 80's, his disposal is statistically elite, particularly when comparing him to other inside players. In his 7 games for Norwood his kicking efficiency was 81% and his disposal efficiency 85%, these are rare numbers indeed and bode well for a fruitful AFL career.

Looking ahead to 2015 and beyond, I predict Bampton will continue to rack up 20 possessions a game and will provide excellent depth for a burgeoning midfield. I also predict significant improvement in his numbers as he learns to gather more touches on the outside and in general play. His tank is already formidable having run a 15.3 beep test earlier in the year and his body needs very little additional strength and conditioning. Some say his upside is limited but I beg to differ, I look at similar inside specialists and can see an upward trend from season to season. For a player comparison he has all the hallmarks of a Tom Liberatore or Nathan Jones, footballers who tend to avoid the headlines but who's contributions cannot be underestimated. With the Bulldogs in the throes of generational change, they warmly welcome Peter Bampton and expect him to make a telling contribution heading into the future.

Melbourne Pick 40: Nathan Drummond
Height: 181cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 19/01/96
Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers
Position: Utility

It's hard to split players apart this far in to the draft. Almost every player left has a clear weakness - but not Drummond. His athletic prowess allows him to play all over the ground. He finished 5th in the 3km time trial, 3rd in the beep test, 4th in the kicking test, 1st in the clean hands test, 3rd in the goalkicking, 8th in the 20m sprint, 2nd in the repeat sprints and 2nd in the standing vertical jump. Quite an impressive resume (e is meant to have a dash on top but apparently that cuts off the rest of your text). Combine this with his penetrating kick and strong attack on the ball, and you have a player.

St Kilda Pick 41: Caleb Daniel
Height 166 cm, Weight: 68 kgs, DOB: 7/7/1996
Club: South Adelaide
Position: MID/FWD

If this kid was 10-15cm taller, he would be a top 10 pick without a doubt. His skill and endurance excels nearly everyone in the draft, an absolute freak in ever aspect. Could turn into the next tip rat at St Kilda, and that is why I am picking him. I can see him being the best goal sneak in the AFL in years to come, or a delisted player after a few years because he couldn't handle the AFL. But he is certainly worth the risk.

Top 1 if he was 10 cms taller. I reckon he will fail at AFL level if a club tries to turn him into a small forward though.
