HEATH Hocking will have groin surgery this week to correct an injury he carried through last season, and is likely to miss six weeks of Essendon's pre-season.

The Bombers midfielder played through pain in 2014 while dealing with groin soreness, and the club was hopeful it would ease in the off-season.

But Hocking returned to training and when his load stepped up and the groin issues remained, so will go under the knife on Friday.

Barring injuries, I think you guys are are underselling Gwilt. He is was in the best 22 St Kilda premiership tilt team, And I doubt they would spend money on him to play him in the VFL. Which by my reasons of deduction is going to make everyone really angry with what I am about to say.

James Hird will put Hurley, Carlisle and Joey fwd. Gwilt will replace Hurley as the tall defender so it adds potency to our lacklustre fwd line. I don't think it will shake the balance as much as in the past.

Also, the original post of no Heath Hocking in the best 22 is almost laughable. Silloc is right,  Kommer will struggle to walk straight back in and he knows it. Especially with the acquisition of a still (in my opinion) ready to rock Adam Cooney. Zac Merrett was our pick for the Crameri trade. As Silloc said, Id prefer that any day of the week. Zac Merrett could be anything. Almost cemented a spot in our side in his first year. Id go as far as to say he has.

The biggest thing I have reviewed about Paddy Ryder was his consistency. When he had a good passage he looked elite and agile and superhuman. But he just never did it enough. Nothing will hurt more than if he finds that consistency at Port to become THE trade of the decade, but Im not holding my breath. Paddy Ryder never really gave our B&F a nudge until last year when it was his "Best ever season" Thanks to a Bellchambers season of injury. I wish him well, but its not as big a loss as everyone is making out.

Essendon 2015 to finish 5th and thats on the back of a not so favourable draw. Albeit a finalisation to this ASADA bullshower is cemented by the end of February.

Whats your guys thoughts on Laverde?
Will he play most of the season and will he play mids or forwards or a bit of both?

I think it'll be pretty apparent once the NAB cup is underway. They'll give Laverde and Langdon a big chuck of that one would assume.

I really rate the addition of Gwilt as our third tall. He seems quite mobile. Let's be honest, we need to find a replacement for Fletch in a few years time! ;)
Steinberg seems our best hope hope atm, but he's still yet to show too much. Hurley and Hookesy have years of quality footy left. Gwilt seems a good addition until we can find a third amigo. Wouldn't have minded grabbing Goddard in the draft for that matter, but hey, let's hope Ariel keeps on kicking on!

Fletch still best 22? hope so, have him in Americas  :)

AFEV

Fletch is still best 22, was having one of the best seasons of his career (well, the last decade of it at least) until he got stripped back with some niggley type injuries. Don't expect him to play every game as he'll be managed but he's in the best team.

Also like Gwilt, he's a good player and he's pretty versatile as well, the people who think he's just depth will probably be pleasantly surprised by how much he offers I think.

Thanks AFEV, actually have Gwilt on my pod back list in SC and DT

A knee injury to David Zaharakis sent a scare through Essendon today. Came off on a cart and iced knee but club says no structural damage

Dons downplay Zaka knee injury

A KNEE injury to star Bomber David Zaharakis has sent a scare through the Essendon camp.

But the Bombers later downplayed the injury, saying Zaharakis only sustained a minor tweak to his right knee.

Despite the injury appearing serious, Essendon told AFL.com.au the star midfielder should be fit to train on Monday.

Youngster Will Hams was another casualty during an intense practice match on Friday morning, succumbing to an ankle injury.

Zaharakis went down clutching his right knee after falling awkwardly in a tackle laid by one of Essendon's potential VFL top-up players, Anthony Tipungwuti.

The midfielder was carted off the ground alongside club doctor Bruce Reid and went into the rooms to receive treatment.

He was later seen with ice on his knee.

Hams also left the track in a cart before gingerly hobbling towards the changerooms with medical staff.

AFL.com.au has asked the club for more details on the Hams' injury.

Nippy forward Travis Colyer was the clear standout in the practice match, where his speed and improved kicking were on show,

Jackson Merrett was prominent on a wing, Brendon Goddard's ball use was first rate,  and former Crow Shaun McKernan's strength up forward was noticeable.

Jobe Watson, Jake Carlisle, David Myers, Michael Hurley and Adam Cooney were among the players not participating in the practice game.

More to come

Essendons team is pretty stacked with the additions of Gwilt and Cooney. Unless suspensions rock the AFL world and Essendon have no choice but to use rookies and top ups, I don't see Laverde or Langford holding a spot. Thats not to say its not possible..... Z Merrett last year for example. If a kid is good enough, he will hold his spot. Will Langford from Hawks is a prime example as well. All reports have Laverde as a steal at pick #20 (Rumors had him as high as Collingwoods pick 5 mix) So he very well could be a jet. Time will tell. fortune favours the brave.

As most people say in a non committal undertone, see what he is like in the NAB challenge.

At the draft Essendon laughed at Carlton for not picking Laverde
