MELBOURNE legend Robert Flower has passed away, aged 59.

Melbourne released a statement late on Thursday from the Flower family.
It is with the deepest regret that we wish to advise of the sudden passing of Robert Flower, after a brief, unexpected illness
The family is devastated by the sudden loss and would appreciate privacy at this time

The dashing wingman played 272 games for the Demons from 1973 to 1987 and was a long-time captain of the club.

Regarded as one of the best players to ever pull on a blue and red jumper, Flower became a Australian Football Hall of Fame inductee and Melbourne Team of the Century member after retirement.

Very sad news. Was one of the greats! Was one of my first favourites - so classy off the wing.

Me too. In fact, my very first memory of VFL football at the age of four or five was watching Robbie charge down the wing of the MCG. I only got to witness the last few years of his career but he was such a fantastic player.
