Assume I get to pick a replacement player for Waters since its before the season?

No sorry Griff, compo picks for retirements was a one off thing for the recycle draft year. If it happened before the Rookie draft we would have awarded a compo pick but its too late now and we have had a trade period, etc.

so I have 53 for the season can I atleast put him on the rookie list so I have a full senior squad?

You can change your rookie list whenever you want up until the start of the season, there will be a cut-off day haven't decided when yet.

Remember we also have a mid-season draft this year, a maximum of 2 delistings/picks designed for exactly this situation, so you won't go the whole season with 53 in your squad.
