THE SYDNEY Swans are trialling tall forward Sam Reid and wingman Lewis Jetta in new backline roles in an effort to make their line-up more flexible in 2015.

After losing free agent Nick Malceski to Gold Coast at the end of last season, the Swans have earmarked Jetta as a potential replacement running off half-back, where his pace and penetrating kick can be an asset.

The 196cm Reid, meanwhile, who kicked 17 goals in 20 games last season, could add height to a backline that will be led by Ted Richards (192cm) and Heath Grundy (192cm).

Both Reid and Jetta played backline roles in the Swans' intra-club match in Coffs Harbour on Wednesday morning, impressing coach John Longmire.

Really, really hope that Reid can make the transition successfully. Need some good quality key defenders coming up for when Richards and Grundy are past it.

Jetta's interesting. Definitely has a better disposal than most of the guys we've got down there atm. Not sure about his defensive capabilities tho.

my thoughts exactly

Reid yes, he's already had some minor experience down back.

Jetta much less keen on. Why not just keep him in the same position that he had his breakout season in? I understand the environment in the forward line has changed a lot but I would've thought he'd fit in well

i think both of these might be more a fit for structure thing to give us flexibilty. fully expect rohan/heeney/laidler to fill out the backline. Reid working as a swingman role works for me. jetts learning new roles to cover injury works, but i would much prefer him running into an open fwd line than trying to deliver off half back

He's such a penetrating/long kick tho which is probably why Horse is testing him down there.

I think its just an issue of having as many players being able to adapt into different roles if there are injuries etc.

The idea of Rohan and Jetta streaming out of the backline breaking through zones and kicking into the fwd line sounds like a handfull?

Mailman the 2nd

Maybe offensively, but McVeigh, Rohan, Shaw and Rampe are strong offensive defenders while having respectably strong defensive capabilites.

Jetta isn't particularly defensive. He doesn't have a big leap to help him either like Rohan does.

Forward focus for Robbo

One common question every pre-season centres around the bargain picks in AFL Fantasy.

As Fantasy coaches shuffle the names on their whiteboards, they ponder who are the players who might be ready to take the next step to senior level, that can be picked up on the cheap?

Dan Robinson is one who may fit the bill, with a change of role paying dividends for the third year Swan.

After being rookie listed from the QBE Swans Academy in 2012, Robinson spent his first two years on the Swans’ list playing and staring in the midfield in the NEAFL.

This pre-season, however, Robinson has been moved into the forward line and is earning high praise from his teammates and coaches for his performance on the training track.

Swans coach John Longmire has earmarked Robinson to be one of the club’s big improvers this year and potentially follow in the footsteps of Harry Cunningham and Jake Lloyd who impressed in the senior team last year.

“Dan’s had a terrific pre-season,” Longmire said.

“We know he’s been a good midfielder, he played a lot in our reserves as a midfielder and did a really good job there.

“He probably would’ve played last year if he had the opportunity if he was on the senior list.

“This year, he’s had another really good pre-season, particularly as a smart half-forward â€" he uses the ball well, he can mark overhead and he’s a good kick for goal.”
