So Lester can't get a game for you guys, but you are willing to offer him and pick 5 to us? Is that the worth of Beams is it?
No it's not! C'mon Ringo, I respect you a lot, but get real with that option mate.

Now that Christensen has nominated Brisbane, surely a player such as Mayes/Aish is up for trade now.. Someone will be unhappy because there is absolutely no way you can play everyone in the same team, there just isn't enough spots for all your fwd/mids.

Redden, Rich, Christensen and Beams all need a spot in your team from the team that finished the last game this year, and with Patfull gone you need a key defender in his spot - otherwise your team will be extremely unstructured.
Our round 23 team this year:

B: Gardiner, Clarke, Adcock
HB: Merrett, Patfull, Bewick
C: Lester, Taylor, Paine
HF: Freeman, Green, O'Brien
F: Bourke, Leuenberger, McStay
R: Martin, Hanley, Crisp
INT: Aish, Beams, Mayes
SUB: Golby

From that team, this should be something close to the INs and OUTs

OUT: Patfull, Lester, Paine, O'Brien, Bourke, Golby, Crisp and 2 of McStay, Freeman, C Beams
IN: Harwood, Rockliff, Zorko, Maguire, Rich, Redden, Staker, Christensen, D Beams

2015 team:

B: Gardiner, Clarke, Maguire
HB: Adcock, Merrett, Rich
C: Christensen, Rockliff, Hanley
HF: Green, Freeman, Zorko
F: Taylor, Leuenberger, Staker
R: Martin, Redden, D Beams
INT: Harwood, Bewick, Aish, Mayes

So apart from Patfull, all those players will become depth, along with Close, Cutler, and Robertson. I'm probably forgetting others. West will be backup as well in case Leuey or Martin get injured. I think Bewick is currently best 22, but only just.
Merrett obviously replaces Patfull, and Staker can also go down back if needed. Young key forwards are developing, and given the age of our list, I don't think it's necessary to grab a gun KPF straight away. Our young defenders looked really good for most of this year, so happy with our defence.

So this should create a really good competition for spots. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one of Crisp, Golby, Paine, and Lester leave over the next year or 2 if they struggle to break into the 22. So they're the kinds of players that could be offered, but obviously the Pies don't want any of those.

But why would we offer someone like Aish, Redden, Hanley? We didn't go after Beams. We're not going to give up a top player to make the deal fair, because then we don't really gain anything, so to speak.

Let's assume Beams is a 100% certainty to not play with Collingwood from now on.

Option 1: Brisbane trade a top player and a pick
Pies lose Beams, gain top player and pick
Lions lose top player and pick, gain better player, playing group might feel like anyone could be traded if a better offer comes up

Option 2: Brisbane don't give up a top player, only picks and/or fringe player(s)
Pies lose Beams, gain player(s) and picks
Lions don't lose anyone from best 22, gain Beams, younger kids might feel like they could be traded

Option 3: Lions don't get Beams, gets traded somewhere else
Pies lose Beams, get whatever else is offered from another club
Lions continue on developing as they were, sends good message to the younger kids at the club of what we're doing

Option 4: Beams doesn't get traded, stays in reserves or whatever, doesn't play for Pies in AFL
Pies basically lose Beams, gain nothing
Lions continue on developing as they were, sends good message to the younger kids at the club of what we're doing

So basically, I'd say options 3 and 4 are wins for Brisbane, option 2 is a potential loss, option 1 is a loss. We need to do whatever we can to prevent another exodus of young players, and trading a top player or a young gun to get the Beams deal done isn't the way to go about it. By all means, if Beams never expressed his desire to go, and we went after him, then something like Redden and pick 5 might even be unders for Beams, but this isn't the case.

Ringo

Lester played only 3 games less than Beams - He was injured mid seasom and played games while we had Rich and redden as well.  He is in our 22 but would be the one to miss if we get Beams so why would he not be offered as a trade.

Yeah, Lester essentially makes way for Beams if we get him.

Negotiations between the Collingwood Football Club and the Brisbane Lions over Dayne Beams ceased at 5pm on Friday evening.

Out of respect to Dayne, Collingwood worked as hard as it could to construct an equitable deal with the Lions who pursued the contracted 24 year-old All-Australian midfielder but, ultimately, didn't value him as Collingwood does.

As everyone is aware, Dayne requested a trade to Brisbane for personal reasons, something Collingwood agreed to consider as long as the outcome returned appropriate compensation.

Unfortunately, this was not forthcoming.Collingwood's position from the outset was that a good player and an early draft pick was a fair return, although the club did consider the possibility of a combination of draft picks. Even this failed to produce a solution.

Now that negotiations with Brisbane have ceased, Collingwood is free to pursue other opportunities involving players and picks. The club remains open to offers from other clubs for Dayne, if that is his wish.

If not, at the conclusion of the trade period the club will look to sit down with Dayne to prepare for the 2015 season.

Ringo

Both clubs a bit stubborn and Picks 5 and 25 were reasonable considering Beams was requesting the transfer but the insistence of a star player was not going to cut with Brisbane. So be it Beams walks to Brisbane next year for nothing at conclusion of his contract.

Do Gold Coast make a play now? ???

Can't imagine he will be all too happy staying at Collingwood next year tbh..

Don't be surprised if GWS swoop in

Toga

Oops, I meant to say Gold Coast or GWS :P

But yeah, if Griffen goes to the Giants I assume they won't be able to make a play for both ???

Ricochet

Yep probably not mate. Would assume if Beams goes to GWS, someone like a Shiel or Treloar would go to Collingwood though

Ricochet

Derek Hine has reportedly said that Collingwood were prepared trade Beams and pick 30 in return for 5, 21 and 25, however the Lions pulled out of the deal.

Obviously Brissie couldn't accept that because they're getting Christo..

ADEZ

Seems like Collingwood caved a little :o
they were adamant they wouldn't take picks and this deal is the exact same except they improve from pick 30 to 21, not exactly a huge difference
