The Gold Coast SUNS have agreed to release Jarrod Garlett from his playing contract ahead of tomorrow’s List Lodgement (2) deadline.

The club had been working closely with Garlett in recent times and early last week Garlett requested the club release him from his contract to allow him to return home to Western Australia to deal with a private family matter.

General Manager - Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft said the change in family circumstances led to the Garlett’s contract release.

"Our player development team and wider support network has been working with Jarrod for some time to assist him in adjusting into life away from his family," Ashcroft said.

"In the midst of this, a significant change in circumstances with his family back in Western Australia led to Jarrod making the decision it was in his, and his family’s best interests to be released from his contract."

"We continue to work with Jarrod and his management to ensure Jarrod's transition into life away from the AFL is as smooth as possible and we wish him and his family all the very best in the future."

Garlett, who played 17 games in his first two seasons with the club, signed a two-year contract extension in August. As a result of his release he will be unable to play AFL during this time.

But if he's released from his contract??

surely there must be a rule if you break a contract you cant play.

If not gibbs should just say he has personal reasons and couldnt play AFL any more.

then break contract and 2 weeks later, oohh im all good again draft me Adelaide.

Same reason why McCarthy couldn't play or train with Freo.  Isn't this Garlett one of the ones that has his head screwed on right?  Must be serious cos I remember he distanced himself from the dodgy members of his family so he could focus on footy.

McCarthy was still contracted while he was in WA though.

and not 100% man. Pretty sure Jeff was the one that used over east to escape from a few things here though

I think Jarrod's fine, he's always been super talented and certainly showed a bit for the Suns, hopefully he comes back from this so he can properly showcase how good he can be.
