Players that are eligible for FA are allowed to nominate which club they would like to go to... Fair enough, most of these blokes have been loyal servants to their clubs for 7-8 years before they are eligible for FA. Kids that have only played 1-2 seasons should be able to nominate their state of choice, and then it's up to the club to find the best deal available to them

I agree 100% with this.  A club has spent at least 2 years developing players and as such should be entitled to fair compensation for their investment by getting the best possible deal for the player but keeping his wishes as well.
Looking at our go home boys from last year Longer Nominated St Kilda, Karnezis nominated Collingwood Docherty nominated Carlton all saying they wanted to return to Victoria.  Should we not have had the right to negotiate with all Victorian Clubs and then accepting best offer, What right has young kids to nominate clubs next we will have draftees refusing to go although we started to see that already.  Tme for the AFL to grow some intestinal fortitude and look after clubs who develop youngsters only to see them go to other clubs for very little return.
As such disagree with you Richo as we are looking after the players wish just not allowing them to dictate which is the case at present. Think until players become FA they should be forbidden to nominate club of choice,
We now have at least 2 clubs in every state which should allow clubs to get the best possible deal for their players.

Yeah I agree that clubs will be reluctant to trade for a bloke that doesn't want to go to a particular state, but O'Rourke for instance... What's stopping him from saying I want to be traded to Victoria, letting the Giants negotiate the best deal for him from one of the Vic teams...

He gets to go to Victoria as he wanted, and the club gets the best possible compensation for the investment they made into him two years ago. Win/win, unlike the current scenarios folding out, particularly Brisbane's misfortune last year

The AFL need to grow a pair and start clamping down on rookies with only a minimum amount of service to their draft club. You sign a contract then you must honour that contract. I have no dramas with FA's that have put years into a club looking to secure their futures. If the AFL are unable to clamp down on the rookies then i can see a massive problem down the track for all clubs. For example a bottom club uses pick 1 or 2 to secure a gun rookie spend a year or two grooming them only to see a club with a sizeable amount of spare cash offer up 7 figure deals to lure them away. What ever happened to clubs not being allowed to even communicate with a player under contract either directly or via their manager, large fines should be in place to deter this for the clubs that try and removal of manager accreditation if said manager is party to it. A contract is a contract you need to man up and honour it.

Yep correct. If you want out of a club bad enough then you would/should be willing to go anywhere as long as the money is equal or better.
If non FA's or contracted players are allowed to dictate where they go then you will see over time (not long) the AFL comp become so lop sided that only 7-8 clubs will continually be the ones pushing for a flag. Prior to free agency coming in the comp was about as fair as it could be if the AFL allow non FA's and contracted players to dictate now then it will quickly spiral into a comp we dont recognise anymore as being on a fair and level playing field, the bottom clubs will continue to have young players poached. Sure they may get low draft picks as compo only to see it happen again and again and they will circle the bottom of the comp continually.
Last but not least if you want to break a contract then you sit out of AFL football for 12 months (1 season) unless there is serious and legitimate reasons for you wanting to do so. Going home cause you miss mum isn't one of those reasons. Toughen up princesses your old enough to vote, to drink and call the shots on your own life and how its done, man up. If your going to miss mummy then dont go in the first place and screw over a club that has paid you a good wage and set you on the path to a well paid career.
If your good enough you'll earn your dollars but you have to show loyalty to those that gave you an opportunity in a Competition you begged to be part of.

Think you missed my main point mate. Nominating clubs isn't new. 40 years ago if a player wanted a trade they would nominate a club of choice and the club would do their best to faciltate a trade to that club. Its not so much dictating as what its made out to be, its just clubs will try and still look after the player leaving as much as possible, as long as they can work out a fair deal.

Its just that its more public and in the media now
