In 2020 the Dogs are going to finish last, and lose 10 star players to free agency, and then hold picks 1-11.

The remaining players will have their contracts heavily front loaded and the kids will be paid peanuts.

In 2021 the Dogs will go out and sign 10 superstars via free agency with the space left in the salary cap. So in the space of 2 seasons they will have replaced every player they lost with like-for-like, and gotten 12 first round draft picks.

That would be possible under the current system. Fair?

No. But sheesh, maybe talk actual sense to actual circumstances?

wont be at the pies next year fo sure

Samsturmfels

What do u guys think of this 3-Way trade idea
Beams to Lions and Merrett or Patfull to Sydney
pick 4 + Sam Reid to Pies

Mailman the 2nd

Sydney wont be trading Reid for Merrett or for Patful. They're already developing him as a player who can play back

This is the way FA should work

All players have a 2 year rookie deal, they are untouchable by other clubs once that deal expires

At the end of their next contract they are restricted FA's, it works the same way as it does now, but teams can place a tender on these players.

The way the tender work is if they fit into a pricing/draft bracket (high paid player, former high pick) the team can place a round tender in that position. So for example, if Frawley was a restricted FA, they can place a first round tender on him. That means Frawley can sign a 1 year deal the team at that tendered price, sign a contract extension with his current team or teams can place a bid on him. If the team puts a bid on him Melbourne can choose to match or they get a 1st round pick from the team that signs him. If a player signs a tender, they effectively sign a 1 year deal. At the end of that contract they can either become an unrestricted free agent or be franchise tagged by the team

A franchise tag means a team signs the player to a 1 year deal where they get a contract that is a 1 year deal with an average salary of the top 10 highest paid players in their position.

So after the restricted FA contract, players become unrestricted and can leave for nothing, however if a team loses more then they gain in the FA period, they can be compensated in draft picks from the end of the 3rd round and each round after.

I can pretty much guarantee this is the mold the AFL will follow and in about 5 years time or whenever the next CBA is up, this is how it will work

Because FA is still in it's infancy and they have restricted movement, teams will be compensated accordingly through draft picks as they can't go out and chase younger guys to fill the void left by the older players leaving to play in premiership windows.

I also want to make the point that the good teams will still build from within. They will draft and develop their own players, they won't be going to free agency to fix their issues. Does anyone honestly believe that Hawthorn won their last two premierships due to free agency? They built the majority of that list, they did get a few key players but they were smart about who they targeted and traded for them. Teams that will get into bidding wars or try and raid all the free agents available will not succeed. Go and have a look at the NFL. The best teams in the league built their squads. They have 53 man rosters so it is probably the closest thing we can get to the NFL in terms of roster size. Check out the Washington Redskins and their history through free agency and quick fixes. Their is a proven formula and the smart teams are exploiting it while the not so smart sides are playing catch-up.

Teams might not build their list from free agency but that's not the issue. The issue is that teams challenging for a premiership can constantly keep 'topping up' on talent and never require a rebuild because of a constant influx of star players. They can also pay  these players less than market value because of the lure of success. The weaker teams that these players are coming from receive compensation, develop the player and then have them taken from a top club as soon as they hit their prime. The weak team constantly has players leaving the club and therefore is never able to actually challenge for anything, again causing more players to leave for success.

Meow also mentions that weaker clubs can simply throw money at free agents to get them to their club. But how much extra do these free agents need to be paid? There really isn't much difference between earning 600k a year or 700/800k a year. Players still live the same lifestyle and can still build a sizeable nest egg. Why not have a premiership medallion to go along with it as well?

What about something like Hardwick's suggestion?

Ringo

Pies have issued an ultimatum to Brisbane to have deal for Beams completed by 5:00pm on Friday.

They are still demanding Pick 4/5 and a Prize player so the week will be interesting. Beams can walk to PSD next year and Pies will get nothing so trust they do not remain pig headed as this is way over for Beams. Also Pick 4/5 which Brisbane is offering is way under,

On another note Lions have fielded enquiries from Bulldogs, Crows and demons for Sauce Merrett,

Remember guys compo picks are based on $$$ and age, not ability. so can't really compare players

Hence why if Higgins is worth a 2nd rounder then Chip is worth pick 3. I am expecting Chip has a longer contract worth more money then Higgins
yeh was more at the Hampson comparisons that have pooped up a few times.
North supposedly tabled a four year 400k deal and Frawley has been rumoured to take less money than other offers to go to Hawks so it's going to be line ball whether Melb get 3 or not
I can't be the only one who laughed at this.
