Mark Whiley has attracted significant interest from Collingwood, which is proving to be a stumbling block that is currently holding up a proposed deal for Carlton.

Future goat
Brownlow medallist and captain
Brownlow medallist
Dual-AA and 2013 B&F
Best outside player in the AFL
Most clutch player in the comp and 2012 B&F
A guy who can kick 5 from the midfield in big games when we need it (Crows last year, tigers this year...) and only like 16
Most underrated player on the side, extremely damaging kick

That's an elite 8 (it's a basketball reference if you didn't know)
Its not 8 when 5 of them won't be eligible to play next year...

Oh, from that drug scandal that nobody has ever seen a single shred of evidence from? Yeah, seems likely.

Gotta also look at it from other side fellas. Clubs will be reluctant to trade for a player if he doesn't want to go to a club/state. Nominating clubs has been going on foreva, it just wasnt made public as much

But then players would only request a trade if they were happy to go anywhere wouldn't they?
Not sure I follow man? Players request a trade, nominate where they want to go, then the club tries to make it happen. If they can get them there they will, if not they'll look elsewhere. Similar to Collingwood speaking to GWS when they thought they couldn't get a fair trade from Brissie.

The captain admitting he took a banned substance isn't enough evidence?

If a player wants out he should be traded to the club offering up the most in return. None of this nominating a club crap.

This!

Players that are eligible for FA are allowed to nominate which club they would like to go to... Fair enough, most of these blokes have been loyal servants to their clubs for 7-8 years before they are eligible for FA. Kids that have only played 1-2 seasons should be able to nominate their state of choice, and then it's up to the club to find the best deal available to them
I agree 100% with this.  A club has spent at least 2 years developing players and as such should be entitled to fair compensation for their investment by getting the best possible deal for the player but keeping his wishes as well.
Looking at our go home boys from last year Longer Nominated St Kilda, Karnezis nominated Collingwood Docherty nominated Carlton all saying they wanted to return to Victoria.  Should we not have had the right to negotiate with all Victorian Clubs and then accepting best offer, What right has young kids to nominate clubs next we will have draftees refusing to go although we started to see that already.  Tme for the AFL to grow some intestinal fortitude and look after clubs who develop youngsters only to see them go to other clubs for very little return.
As such disagree with you Richo as we are looking after the players wish just not allowing them to dictate which is the case at present. Think until players become FA they should be forbidden to nominate club of choice,
We now have at least 2 clubs in every state which should allow clubs to get the best possible deal for their players.
Think you missed my main point mate. Nominating clubs isn't new. 40 years ago if a player wanted a trade they would nominate a club of choice and the club would do their best to faciltate a trade to that club. Its not so much dictating as what its made out to be, its just clubs will try and still look after the player leaving as much as possible, as long as they can work out a fair deal.

Its just that its more public and in the media now

Nuh i didnt miss it and i agree it has gone on for along time. I neglected to mention that the clubs have brought some of this on themselves by accommodating players so much wanting out of contracts. Its a mess and i dont have all the answers but enforcing contracts would be a good place to start.

The banned substance that wasn't/isn't actually banned? Yeah that.

yeh yep this breaking contract stuff is very worrying. Just a lot jumping up and down about players nominating clubs when it has always happened. Its just a process of trade

Grazz

Agree. Enforce contracts or tell them to sit out for a season their choice. I can't believe the AFL can not see where this all heading considering they are desperate for a fair and even comp.

Toga

This is going to be a big issue in the next decade or so with the huge long-term contracts that some players are getting/going to be getting in coming years after a certain someone changed the game!

Fox Sports reporting that the Brisbane/Collingwood deal is as good as done..

"The Magpies have broken the Beams deadlock with an agreement that will net the club picks No. 5, 25 and Crisp from the Lions in exchange for the onball superstar."

Congrats Lions, building a very good list after being savaged last year.

Heppell, Watson, Cooney, Goddard, Stanton, Zaharakis, Howlett, Myers

#EliteEight

Who's Myers? And Howlett? Also surely Gwilt gets a mention??

meow meow

You'll have to give up a 3rd round pick for Cooney, that's how elite he has been lately.

I'd still back Bont over those 8 combined.

Grazz

So far Brisbane winning the trade period comfortably. Most improved by a long shot.  :o
