Herein lies the issue though - we don't want Watson or Murphy.

With the way my team is I'd rather a young gun so that in a few seasons we are really strong and looking to be top 4 rather than moving up to the middle of the table. In 2-3 seasons when we are strong Watson and Murphy will be 30+ which is not ideal.

Which is why I was suggesting trading the picks.

At the moment we're looking at Bontempelli with pick 1 because he's the best long-term option.

He's not the best player in the pool at the moment so in a trade period for the picks I'd look at trading with someone with Pick 4/5/6/7 (still early enough to get Bont imo) but also to get something a little extra off them to boost our team (whoever wants Watson/Murphy more should be able to offer a little sweetener).

Alternatively I could trade away Pick 1 for 1-2 established players who fit our age profile better (24-26) with the person we are trading with knowing they can get whoever they want from this pool at Pick 1.

Does that make sense?

Makes sense to me and I can see where you are coming on.  As I said earlier I can also see lower teams selecting a middle class player to package with another player for a top class player,

Hypothetically, if I really wanted Murphy I could go to Memph "hey man, if you take Murphy with pick 1 I'll take Bonty with pick 10ish. Would you do Bonty + player X for Marc?"

Kinda gets around the issue a bit but would need people to be true to their word etc
