then will they have to go onto the rookie list if drafted in the rookie draft though?

i counted a bit over 20 players from the 2 teams that would really help teams best xv

so after 1 round and 16 picks still a few decent ones left

Ringo

As per original post KB Rookie draft will be used to fill teams to the required 45 players,  National Draft will be only 4 rounds (5 picks for bottom 4 teams).  For next season only when final list lodged in priority order the 4 rookies will also be nominated, so no they do not need to go on Rookie list.

Nige

Yeah, that's what happened last year and I think it's the best way to do it. Especially if people are going to be using a rookie pick on a decent player.

Spite

So national draft is not for picking up players from the two abandon teams?

Someone getting murphy or jobe out of this is crazy good.
People with a young rebuilding team are getting a large advantage while people who purposefully started with older players to go for instant premiership glory are getting shafted.

I can't think of a really fair way to distribute the players though.

Maybe we should lock them up for a year and decide next year? Have a year to look for new coaches? You never know, RD popped up over a season, there may be a few next week.

Also perhaps there could be a NBA style lottery for the draft positions on the special draft if we do go ahead rather than reverse ladder positions. I guess leaving it to chance makes it feel a bit more fair than handing it to teams who were felled by injury rather than purely from poor players

JBs-Hawks

Look at the difference between the steines and giants and the hedgehogs and you think there being shafted?  ::)

Ringo

I have updated the OP with the revised proposal after discussions.

What do people think of Spites suggestion but with this slight twist Steins and Giants will have picks 1 & 2 from the draft with the remaining 16 picks being randomised. Really believe the Giants and Steins need this concession. As has been said other teams suffered from injury.

Ricochet

We definitely can't find two new coaches?? RD has just popped up in Worlds, surely we can find 2 new ones before the start of the new season

JBs-Hawks

But there will always be the constant struggle to find new coaches. I think 16 teams will also lead to a more even comp look at axv and euros.

I do like Spite's idea, have a second draft with randomised/semi-randomised order for the players on the folding team's list, probably to occur before the main national draft.

stew42

Also if this is the case, will there be no trades for the folding teams? I guess if we can't use draft picks that'd probably be the case...

LF

Having only 16 teams will improve the depth of all teams if picks are used wisely
And yeah it's a constant struggle to find new coaches to take over teams.

Ringo

To answer a couple of questions clarify.

There will only be one selection from the 2 folding teams.  I propose to do straight away as some teams may want to select a lower player from both teams and package for a better player in trade. (I may be the only one who thought of that). Players selected will be available for trade.  I am also leaning to semi randomised draw as I quoted earlier.  Eben though Breakers are third bottom team it is chiefly a result of injury so think it appropriate for them to be included in Random Draw. So bottom line will be all teams will get 1 player from each of the folding teams with balance of players going to random draw,

Regarding finding coaches I have had expressions of interest in a number of threads for 2 weeks and have not even received a nibble.

There is also the possibility that another coach may decide not to continue as well but hope not.

Obviously no trades can be negotiated or finalised with folding teams.

Ringo

With the Random Draw to ensure Teams get equal opportunities and in trying to keep competition even I am also looking at this:

Randomising Draw on the following basis
Teams finishing 13 - 16 (Rams Bunnies Owls Breakers)
Teams 9 - 12  ( Swaggers, Cruisers, Hawks, Dragons)
Teams 5 - 8 (Magic, Hurricanes, Hoods, Falcons
Teams 1 - 4 (Hedgehogs, Badgers, Werewolves, Leeches)

Obviosly there will be a random 3 where the relinquished teams involved.

Memphistopheles

Ok my thoughts on this as the coach of the bottom team is mostly in line with what others have been saying.

I think reduce the teams to 16 is all right - if we do this though I'd be in favour of keeping the team lists (squads) as is instead of reducing them as there will be a lot more undrafted players now.

I think the recycle draft (or whatever you want to call it) should happen straight away.

The reason is I have been trying to work a trade to bring in another good midfielder (to be VC and C when Jack is having a down week).

If I can get this mid from this draft it would change my trading plans - or at least my main off-season goal.

In terms of the draft order - the Steins (I won't speak for anyone else) are desperately short on quality.

While I think we will be ok with some good trading/drafting (we made a start last year) it will still take a while for us to be competitive.

To miss out on a top pick in this draft because of it being randomised would really hurt us.

What's happening with the rest of the players needs to be very clear though.

Is there any chance of a system where we can trade with people for their recycle draft picks?

I'll explain why below - this is what I'd like to see:

1) Recycle draft order announced.

2) There is a short, 1-2 week, trading period which works like the GWS mini-draft the AFL had when clubs picked up JOM, B Crouch, Martin and Hogan. During this trad period people can trade ONLY their Recycle Draft picks for players.

The reason I'd like to see this is I'd love Bontempelli and had tried to arrange a deal with Stew to get him but if I took him as Pick 1 in the Recycle draft over Murphy, Gibbs, Watson people might cry foul that we weren't taking the best player available.

However, someone else might want Watson perhaps and be willing to offer us something good for him to strengthen our team - a win/win.

I'm not sure whether this counts for list movements or not - maybe not?

3) The recycle draft happens.

4) The Normal trade period commences where National and Rookie draft picks (which are now a more valuable commodity) can be traded.

5) Trade window closes)

6) The National Draft happens

7) The Rookie draft happens

8) Another trade window opens and runs from after the rookie draft until AFTER the new player positions have been announced.

9) Trading finishes

10) The season starts

11) The Staines win the flag :P :P .... ok so this one is a joke but the rest are serious.
