Maidens, who's to say that Pick 8 will eventuate to be anything?

Heaps of Top 10 picks have turned out to be spuds. I'm more than happy to give up the pick for a proven gun

Just a reminer

I traded longer for pick 5 two years ago, probably the most relevant precedence.
So you are saying we didn't get enough for him?
McCartney Pick#15 last year, Longer #5 two years ago.  Both under 22yo.  I wonder where Guthrie got taken in the draft?
The more I think about it, the more I think we didn't get enough in return.    Redo,  block the trade      :)

I think it's fair, that's why I passed it.

In two years I wonder what #8 will be worth, because Johnson will be retired(so we know his worth will be zero)

We also have a lot of young players in our team, so it was worth the risk to bring in some proven premium experience.

Had my co-coach allowed me to we could have traded Bennell for a top 5 pick to land one of the gun forwards in this years draft, but RD knocked me back  ::)

thank god he did

I just want to say like many others - I love the passion in the WXVs.

This is why I wanted to be a head coach.

With regards to the Longer/McCarthy deal for Guthrie - the main thing for us was that good rucks are very hard to come by and take a long time to develop. Longer has already had that development period at the Lions and a year at the saints and was a Top 10 pick originally.

McCarthy was the second best kpp in the draft last year and a Top 20 pick while, like Chumps said, Guthrie is good but non-super premium midfielders are a dime a dozen. We have Cooney, Bird, Curnow as mids who would be ahead of him or close to his scoring this season anyway

Also the AFL trade week has played in to our hands. With Stanley leaving the Saints Longer and Hickey playing together could be more of a reality while Boyd's departure from the Giants means McCarthy could get more game time.

PS - I see the re-worked Dublin deal. What the? In my opinion Holz's was improving his team too much. If anything the deal is worse now.

Oh well, time to plan to be premiers in 2-3 seasons time (always our plan). Next year looking like a one-horse race...

this is what makes it hard to negotiate, everyone I talked to said I was losing in the trade but in terms of next year it does improve my squad. But that's why I overpaid in the trade to do it. The picks should really balance it out.

Yep you are correct, Top 10 picks can be spuds.(but are you sure that's the argument you want to settle on?)

If so, than we will use your own argument and say "pick#9 that we got in the Longer/Guthrie trade may end up being a spud".
Which means there's risk and devalues the pick.  Clearly the Guthrie deal has to be fair in that case.

I didn't bring up the Johnson trade, it was used as evidence for the value of a Pick. I'm allowed to dispute that evidence and did so.
If you honestly think that deal was bad, you would have a field day in AXV. Someone just traded Hibberd for Jeremy McGovern.  :o

Please, context is important. Very much a needs based deal.

Top forwards in SC last year:

1. Stefan Martin - not a forward
2. Robbie Gray
3. Luke Parker - not a forward
4. Brent Harvey - OLD
5. Patrick Dangerfield - not a forward
6. Buddy Franklin
7. Ben McGlynn - not a forward
8. Dustin Martin
9. Dayne Zorko
10. Paul Chapman - OLD
11. Cyril Rioli - injury prone
12. Nick Riewoldt - OLD
13. Luke Dahlhaus
14. Jarrad Waite - OLD
15. Devon Smith

21 years old. 59 games. 94 DT/ 91.2 SC average.

To me, it appears that Devon is the 5th most valuable forward when you take age, scoring ability/potential, and durablity into account. He can be moved on. Serious offers only please.

Just turned 20, former #1 pick with 2 seasons development into him, Lachie Whitfield is also available to be traded. It took Lachie just 2 matches to score his first SC 100, with a high of 141 in his first season. How many players do that?!

Jukes

If you're taking into account age and scoring ability, I'd rate a few players ahead of Smith that weren't listed i.e. Boyd, Daniher, Hogan, etc.

Jason Tutt, in his first match (147 in fact)!

I demand equal price that Whitfield will attract  :P haha

Chumps post may have been lost in all the noise before but Jack Darling could be on his way out of Cape Town.

If you are interested then let me know!

I'll take Tutt, I'll give you a Coke Zero and a packet of chips in return.
