One of the Adelaide Football Club's greatest defenders Ben Rutten will retire at the end of the 2014 AFL season.

Rutten, 31, finishes his career as a one-club player, having established himself among the most reliable full-backs of the modern era.

He has currently played 225 AFL games, but his tally will grow as the Crows pursue a finals berth in coming weeks.

Rutten, affectionately known as 'Truck', decided this season would be his last several months ago.

"I always wanted to finish up while I was still contributing to the team and matching it with the best forwards," he said.

"No doubt the time is right, and I leave knowing the Club is blessed with a talented and motivated playing group, which is destined for success."

Truck's been great for us over his career and had a very good career with us. Thanks Truck you've been a good defender for us and a great ambassador for us and the game. Wish you all the best for the future in all you do. Cheers.
