Tell me why i Shouldn't select the greatest 2 dt players of the modern era

I have changed my dream team so many times in the preseason preparation, but I can say that I have locked in my backline and rucks (excusing injury). The midfield and the forward line have been the biggest concerns for me in the last week. Before today, I had a forward line that consisted of 6 players exceeding 300k and dangerfield and 4 mids of gibbs boyd selwood and masten.

However, after reading the debates about whether to pick up ablett and/or swan, at this moment I have decided to hinge my season(or at least a half) down onto 3 players and $20k (maybe a lil dramatic/but then maybe not). Those 3 players are Rockliff, Gumbleton and Podsiadly(or any player available for 20k above these prices) One of these players will be my 7th forward which is something I have said is too risky on every team I have rated.

Atm, I have elected to gamble that;
- all(or at least 1) will  play round 1-i would say this is probable.
- gumby does not get injured
-that these selections are the best rookie selections

with possibly other risks that you will all no doubt pick up on.

The reason I have made this switch is to secure Swan AND Ablett NOW.
People suggest they are overpriced. Possibly. But are they going to drop in value?? If so, by enough?? I am not sure that they will, so would rather secure them now and save the trades for later. They are the best 2 captain options by far!!!

Hard to believe but having Swan or Ablett in your team could be considered unique as many DT coaches are avoiding them because of price..

And I totally agree with this statement!

Thats why I have elected(at this stage) to go with BOTH.

Tell me why I shouldn’t?????

that reasoning is actually pretty solid i like it, would actually maybe go hitchcock as your 7th though, depending on whether he gets a game. Was thinking about ablett, but i tend to think he is overpriced, still the uniqueness factor is very true, liking the idea mate

I would also argue that other deserve the tag of greatest DT players of the modern era.  Buckley was an absolute gun, West consistent.  Even Joel Bowden scored better longer than either Ablett or Swan.

Ablett is close but Swan does not deserve that tag yet.  Maybe Greatest DTers last year....

Thanks for the quote Eaglesman...I've got one of them and I don't care what anyone thinks...To many sheep on this site that listen to crap advice..

get em both mate...

Cheers guys.

People always say that getting this player and getting that player is too risky. But at the end of the day, every player a coach selects is a risk and I have come to the conclusion that I would rather risk selecting the best 2 players than not.

My concern is with which player and players will make up the the 7th,8th and 9th forward rookie forward spots which is why I have 20k up my sleeve. This will be used to pick the best available rookie options. Rockliff Gumbleton and Podsiadly is just the starting point. It is one thing I will be troubling my brain with over the next 10 days.

In response to Resch, I totally agree with you, the title of the topic was more used to encourage people to read this thread so I can get some feedback.

The title worked for me :P

The first strategy I was going with (going with a different one now), was to have GAJ and Swan in my team from the start.

Yes, their price is going to go down, but I reckon you havent brought them in the team for that, you have brought them in to play all year for you.  The key to this is choosing the right rookies that will play that 6 - 8 games and increase in value so you can upgrade them.

I dont mind the idea at all and I think the trades saved is worth it.

I understand the logic behind the 'No Ablett or Swan' theory, but having them saves sooo much hassles. The hassle of guessing when they have bottomed out (remember the continued rising and rising last year?), the lack of hassle choosing a captain when you have one of them and the hassle when you don't and of course the extra scoring they bring. I'm also a massive Cats fan and love GAJ, so having him in my side also makes me like my side more.

When you count in that he usually misses a couple of games a season, Ablett's average slips.  He is overpriced by a fair whack if you were to factor in the say 60-70 (being generous) your bench sub would have scored for him.  Assuming it didn't donut you.  You only get Ablett if you think he will play 22, and I do not.  I had Ablett in 2008.  Was awesome until the missed games burned me, but at least I had him before he was the #1 dreamteamer :)

The only reason not to get Swan is concern about what will happen to the Collingwood midfield structure with the addition of Ball, and probably more game time for the likes of Beams and Sidebottom.  The only way to go for him is probably down.  I had Swan last year when everyone was getting on the Ablett train :)

FWIW, this year I am going Bartel as my captaincy ace.  I think Bartel is a sure thing with better durability than Ablett.  I do feel that by going "back" to Bartel that I might be missing the next gun to rise from gun to absolute DT superstar (like Swan or Montagna last year), but I'm not convinced that there is one of those this year.

I will probably still look for Swan as an upgrade- the reality is that he will drop in price if he "only" scores a lazy 100, and that will happen even if there's no change to his average for the year.  He is a certainty to be cheaper at some stage of 2010 than he is now, and probably sooner rather than later.

Thanks Arky, I think that's worthy of some serious consideration!

eaglesman

thanks arky those are definitely points to consider about ablett and i understand ur reasoning in selection of bartel and his durability. (i cant bring myself to make the change at this stage, but bartel would definitely be the one i would be gettin on if the change does come around)

with regards to swan i would have my doubts about a significant change to his tog with respect to beams and sidebottom(both crabs)but you may be right remains to be seen. i wud agree that his price may decline(marginally) but is it worth wasting a trade to get him later, i don't think so(i also had him last year and he was just a machine :))

eaglesman

haha definitely!!! hope the pies have tuned this machine regularly over the pre-season in prep for the coming year

Bomber Rock

I have gone Bartel for my Captain this year. Having said that, planning to upgrade to a player when their price inevitably drops is fraught with danger. I tried that with Reiwoldt last year but just never managed to get him. The year before it was Cox, who i got with only 6 or so games to go.
