AFL Ignoring NSW and Qld.

You can say the exact same thing around, how does Lloyd Perris, Heenery or any of the players gone through academies in Brisbane or Sydney hurt other teams?

Its not like these guys are O'Meara's or Ablett's in the waiting, so its a complete non issue and the fact that Sheedy has to spell it out to him is never a good sign

Because they could be. If those sides didn't think it was worth it,  they wouldn't do it. Think arguing against yourself

when clubs are building or in short term strife,  sure, give them a hand.  After a while they need to be innovative to get around any geographic disadvantage

Why should not the northern states have preference over interstate clubs for the players they develop from other codes.  It is not as if ypu have no youth to develop yourself where AFL is the only real sport plaued in VIC compared to other states.

If you are fair dinkum, you would do way with father son as well that is more unfair than 4 minor acadamies

Eddie only thinks of the Pies and not the good of the AFL. Brisbane only has one player so far from the acadamey on its list and they are yet to play first grade. 

Are Collingwood that desperate that they need to poach players that Northern clubs have developed. 

Big fact is only 3% of players in the AFL come from NSW or Qld and you really want a slice of that pie come on.  Acadamies were developed to try and give players a path way into Qld and NSW clubs respectively without leaving the state.  What is wrong with that.

Also if you want to complain about something how about complaining about draftees that make it known they will not go interstate or go home players nominating their club of choice.

I don't think that you understand that this isn't about the clubs. This isn't about giving Sydney or Brisbane an advantage, its about developing AFL in the state.

Players aren't forced to go to the clubs, as you mentioned some get scholarships such as Witts. Sheedy summarizes the reason its in place entirely.

Unlike what Eddie thinks, the academies are not meant to be where scraps not able to play AFL are to go, because that would achieve nothing. Its so that these states can grow for AFL and get to a point where academies, scholarships and other incentives are not needed.

In a perfect world sure, zone selections shouldn't exist, but they do for a reason.

As for Tasmania, maybe you'll get a look in if Essendon goes down :P

but it is hard to say the AFL is ignoring those states with the huge amount of money invested.  Plus they've won 5 of the last 13 flags,  compared to 1 in Wa, 1 in SA and 6 in Vic.

I agree AFL is not ignoring NSW whatsoever, I think they're doing enough there, taking COLA away is annoying but understandable.

Brisbane is in a much worse off position, and they should definitely be much more of a focal point when going interstate

Agree with you Oss as I believe Tas should have a team for development of game in Tasmania.  They have been feeding the clubs for years and we have a couple at Brisbane.

Acadamies have only been developed in the last few years to try and grow the game and give opportunities to local players.

Know it is hard to understand but AFL really has to fight for recognition in the 2 states,  This is an example this week JB retires photo with family on the front page of the Courier mail yet main story not even on the main sports page but 5 pages in. Probably had better coverage in Victoria than Qld. Not really complaining but showing how hard AFL has to fight and acadamies are a way of doing it and developing the kids.

When the acadamies play teams from AFL states they currently are well beaten so do not see why there is so much concern over a couple of players that get selected.

Just bear in mind too acadamies are not zones as club must pick players with next pick similar to father/son rule so Victorian clubs have access but I would say very few would give up 1st or second round picks to select.

Tongue in cheek may be Eddie wants to get his hands on Michael Voss's eldest who has joined the Under 14 acadamey.

Also remember Brisbane won 3 of those 5 premierships Eddie was the leader in getting Brisbanes retention allowance taken off us similar to Swans Cola now and look what the result is we have lost 8 first round draft picks since 2004 to go home factor,

The swans put over a million dollars a year into developing hundreds of talented AFL players from NSW every year to try to get the most out of the large population/ potential AFL ability in NSW.

In the past 10 years only 17 players from NSW have been drafted (7 of which were compulsory NSW zone selections), playing an average of 24 games per player. Without the incentive to develop players in non-AFL states, the pool of talent won't be developed properly- without intervention from the academies, a lot of talented players won't progress as much as they should, having to play in what is currently a sub-par competition.

Anyway, I think it would be inadvisable to ditch the academy so prematurely.

In a most severe case, the funding for the academies should be split between all clubs, with no club having priority to the graduates.

At the moment though, I don't think that's necessary- at the very least GWS/ GC should be able to retain their current academy privaleges to compensate for not being able to receive any father son picks for the next like 20 years.

So following that logic any home game where attendance does not reach expectations then a subsidy is payable from the AFL.
But to be fair some of the schedulings to suit TV rights is pathetic and does effect crowd numbers,V
