Was tempted to post this in the Stealing our game thread but it is different.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/leigh-matthews-says-afl-does-not-fathom-it-has-four-expansion-clubs-in-queensland-and-nsw-20140622-zshy8.html

Article discloses some interesting facts. Who runs the game the AFL or Collingwood President Eddie Maguire, He was instrumental in getting rid of Brisbanes retention allowance in 2002 whilst Sydney, GC and GWS retain theirs and you can see the effect now.

This really displays the effect on Brisbane and the other 3 states. Bear in mind this also covers Brisbane's glory years so not just last year,

Not satisfied with his clubs playing strength Maguire now wants unrestricted access to our acadamies where all 4 clubs spend considerable amount of funds developing players.

Do not think the AFL dominant states really understand the struggle in QLD and NSW.  So hands off our acadamy players and if you want them you must pay with appropriate picks.

As the article says if Eddie is fair dinkum about an even playing field Collingwood would give up their Father/son pick.

It's up to the AFL to represent all clubs and not pander to Collingwood and other rich influential clubs who have also been instrumental in getting the equalisation taxes watered down.

Yup its a farce that Eddie can get away with so much under the name of "equalisation" but some other clubs like Geelong have called him out on his bullshower. Hopefully others follow suit

flower off Eddie, you're wrong.

The Lions need this, We need the COLA I think :P Eddie should try looking after the Lions, or atleast come up here to see what it is like. Really, it's weird being one of the only 15 people at a school of 1500 who like gayfl.

Eddie is a spastic flog.  ::)
Edit: ok, maybe being a bit harsh. A few frothies have made be belligerent. But I do believe that if you took away all of the retention allowances, academies, etc, the Vic clubs would definitely have an advantage. BL's "homesick" boys are proof of that. Plus It's not like Collingwood can say that they aren't a powerhouse club when compared to NM, WB, even Geelong

A live example is the Melbourne Storm trying to establish League in your AFL dominant state. Will make some ground but never take over.  The NRL though continues to support the Storm.

However the real concern that the AFL has to address is potential draftees stating the do not desire to go to clubs. Wingard has set the precedent with GWS/  The AFL should have quashed it straight away but did nothing.

ZGood to see that Eddie is still looking out for number 1, himself. Who cares about anyone else.I dont believe that all players should get COLA but i do believe that some players should get it.

The biggest problem that the Lions had was that Jared Polec, Billy Longer, Sam Docherty and Patrick Karnezis were not playing in the 1s last year. Whether they were home sick and werent performing and trying to get traded or not, Lions should get COLA like the other 3 clubs but only for players on $100k or less.

Why should the 4 clubs not have first pick on the players that they have been developing?? Get your head out of your arse Eddie

Too true as well, its about time someone told Eddie to shut up

I'm for free markets

if a team constantly needs a leg up, they shouldn't exist

Mailman the 2nd

This isn't about teams getting a leg up, this is about developing AFL as a sport in NSW and Queensland, if people like McGuire can't grasp the concept that 1 out of 10 players coming out of these states will be drafted to their own state then he can go run his own league

I don't see how it matters who develops them

pies developed Witts from NSW, how does that hurt him, NSW , Sydney or the GWS?

Mailman the 2nd

You can say the exact same thing around, how does Lloyd Perris, Heenery or any of the players gone through academies in Brisbane or Sydney hurt other teams?

Its not like these guys are O'Meara's or Ablett's in the waiting, so its a complete non issue and the fact that Sheedy has to spell it out to him is never a good sign
