MELBOURNE'S stunning transformation has fuelled the club's bid to keep star teen Jesse Hogan.

The Demons will reignite contract talks with the power forward later this season, confident its dramatic on-field resurgence and improving club culture has put it in a stronger position to re-sign the goal kicker.

Hogan, 19, has delayed talks on his next deal due to injury. The 195cm key forward is due back from stress fractures in his back in 5-6 weeks.

Fremantle and West Coast remain hopeful Hogan will want to return home when his contract expires at the end of next season.

It is believed the emerging star would command in excess of $500,000 a season on his next deal, making him one of the highest paid players for his age.



Melbourne teammate James Frawley is out of contract at season's end with Gold Coast and Fremantle believed to be among the frontrunners to poach the free agent.

Mahoney said the club was "waiting for James to make a decision".

Depending on what clubs offer Frawley, Melbourne is in line to receive a first-round compensation draft pick if the key position player departed.

Based on current ladder positions, a move from Frawley could land the club picks No. 5 and No. 6 in November's national draft.





This is one of the first times I've seen us linked to Hogan. Getting him across would be a huge get, although I'm not getting my hopes up. And would love to get Frawley across, he could fill the hole left by one of our aging stars at either end of the field

I know Jack Martin got a contract extension for something similar before his first game didn't he, just seems like too much to be paying a kid that hasn't even played one game yet. Sure he'll be good, but there's so many other factors you'd want to consider

Think you guys would definitely be after Frawley with McPharlin on the way out and his ability to swing forwards as well

Getting Hogan would be massive, and like the other article, teams need to be brave if they want results. Sign him for 5 years @ $500k would mean he is probably a bargain by year 5

what I actually was getting at was that they might be better putting everything into Hogan, being a WA boy it has the extra bit of pull to maybe get him home, and the dockers will be desperate for a Pav replacement next year or year after
