Problem is the Sunday Channel 7 game is always on this time slot. Obviously it's in the TV rights contract that it has to be on this time, presumably so the game leads into Channel 7's 6pm new bulletin afterwards.

It's always about money first and TV rights is where the money comes from.

why do 7 want a 3pm start anyway?

Because that way when the footy finishes at 6pm they hope viewers leave it on 7 to watch their News. That's why 7 cut off the footy coverage so quickly after the game (often missing the team song) so that people haven't got time to think about switching off the news.

It's all about their ratings.
