A CLOUD hangs over the immediate playing future of Greater Western Sydney backman Josh Hunt as he weighs up a switch to NFL punting.

Hunt, 31, is considering early retirement from the AFL after he was last night overlooked at the selection table for a second straight match.

The Herald Sun can reveal the booming left-footer has been working for three years towards a second professional sports career in the United States.

It is believed the two-time premiership defender has been mentored by former Geelong teammate and ex-NFL punter Ben Graham, now head of football operations at Western Bulldogs.

Part of Hunt's preparation has included regular workouts and flexibility exercises tailored for the American style of punting.

If Hunt's plan is successful, he could be given a chance to impress at a punting camp or trial later in the year. Free agents can be signed in March or April next year.

Not sure why he's not being selected in the first place at GWS.

They are literally screaming for a hard nut in the backline and he was key to them doing well in the first few rounds.

Its a shame because he's still a decent player

Yep, very true.

Good luck to him if he does pursue NFL.

This reminds me of back when my dream team was called 'Josh Hunt's Calves' back in 09.

He's an enormous unit so I could definitely see this working out.

LOL Meow.

Will be interesting to see how he goes in the NFL, i guess if he thinks he has the potential he needs to give it a punt.
