Yeah that is a but of a nothing punishment really, as you say he would've missed some of those games anyway but also what's 5K to an AFL player who probably gets paid more than that each game? Not much.

So he was injured and on crutches and had one crutch with him in which he used as a weapon. Was also drinking which he wasnt meant to be as he is on the injury list.

Very lucky just to get a 5 weeks suspension and $5k fine

5 weeks now, if he gets found guilty and sent to prison he'll be sacked

Well, we don't know the full situation to be fair. I don't think he'd even consider appealing the ban if it was as clear cut as it looks from what we've gotten from the media.

Looking at the charges laid Zip it would take a very good lawyer to put a bit of positive spin on it for him.

Yeah when players are getting hit with 3-4 week suspensions for simply bumping a player wrong surely getting multiple criminal charges against you involving bodily harm would get you in hotter water than 5 weeks

Bloody hell, Greene really is a bit of a head-case.

but he accepted the ban

QuoteWhile the 20-year-old accepted the ban, he is considering his options after discussions with his manager and the AFL Players Association.

AFLPA player relations manager Brett Murphy told the Herald Sun the five-week sanction was excessive because the club had agreed not to pre-judge the police charges laid against Greene.

the important thing to note is the quote at the end- and personally, I'm of the view of 'innocent until proven guilty', and I've said several times that I don't think players should necessarily be punished for criminal allegations before they've been proven in court. It makes more sense if that's why Greene was considering challenging the penalty- because if the giants had 'agreed not to pre-judge the police charges laid against Greene.' that means his 5 week ban was purely for drinking while injured.

agree, innocent until proven guilty except that he accepted the ban which doesnt look good for him and is pretty much pleading guilty

The giants released this statement 20 min ago

http://www.gwsgiants.com.au/news/2014-05-16/giants-statement

Basically, the ban was for drinking when injured and failing to notify the club about the incident

and Greene does intend to contest it.

The issues with these scenarios is that you basically can't believe any of the shower that doesn't come directly from either the play, his manager or the club.

Mailman the 2nd

Is it really an unfair enough punishment to appeal though?

Ignoring criminal charges, drinking when injured and not notifying the club are pretty standard "against protocol" things that get you in trouble with your club.

Sure, maybe 5 weeks is a bit much but not really worth going to the trouble of appealing IMO

If they let him off then what does he learn?? That he can get away with anything
