Had this debate with a few mates the other night and was interested to see what everyone thinks.

Being a Richmond supporter we are accused of it all.. :P and in some cases probably rightly so but I dont believe there is a bandwagon mentality amongst our supporters at all.

3rd most members in the league despite only 1 finals appearance in 13 years.
Always been in the top handful for the most members and crowd attendances despite being down the bottom half of the ladder year after year.

My nominations.. Saints supporters and Port supporters.

The saints played in front of empty stadiums for years through the 80's and 90's then when they moved to the top of the table in 09' every second person seemed to be a Saints supporter. Membership tally of nearly 40,000 in 2010 and now its the 2nd worst in the league if you exclude the GC and GWS.

Port are arguably worse. 2 years ago half their seats were covered with banners and the remaining seats were still empty.
Now they have all jumped on board. Over 50,000 members in the top half of the league and selling out games at Adelaide oval.

Whats everyone elses thoughts? Which supporters jump on and off the bandwagon the most?

#1 Port port adelaide. Lucky for the mighty kochieeee or they might have had to put blankets over the entire stadium .
#2 Carltank. On and off faster than a hookers undies
#3 Collingwood. i know they have led the membership numbers for years but watch how fast they swarm for the carpark if they are getting done.
#4 Richmond. I know they have stuck fat through a lot of bad times but I have heard a lot of stories of microwaved meberships

I've always thought when Essendon are winning you can't walk down the street without some guy who doesn't know the difference between a flank and a shank letting you know about it

You can tell who are bandwagon supporters easily on the match day board :x

I mean, if Richmond are somehow in the top 5 for bandwagon, I don't understand how or why you would put yourself through everything. The inconsistencies, the turnovers and the no finals for 13 years.

Got to go with Fremantle. Have watched half the state jump on and off them over the last 10 years,

Went to a Richmond game a few years ago. They were up by 40 and then in a quarter they were losing by 5 points at 3/4 time and I seen 1000s of people get up and leave... Even though they ended up losing by 30 odd points. It's like they knew it was coming!

Immediately I thought of teams that have struggled until recently and then thought that Freo would pop up. But like many, I have been with Freo right from the very beginning, copping shower over the years from 90% of your mates who have grown up as WCE supporters. So flower it feels good to finally be on the right track. Bandwagoners jump on and off so I wouldn't think Freo could qualify as we haven't yet enjoyed a success then downfall for supporters to jump off. Most of us have been through the shower and are still enjoying the rise.

I'm going to go with Port purely because they have been successful at the highest level, then went through a very tough period only to see terrible crowd numbers (and those ugly seat covers), to again be on the right track and see supporters fill stadiums.

RaisyDaisy

I agree with you Quinny.

The banners on the seats was just laughable, yet very sad, so Port supporters are bandwagon for sure

Bandwagon supporting is generally done by the fans who are not massive die hard footy fans in the first place, and I get that fans like that don't want to go to games or become a member when their team is bad, but being a bandwagon supporter in the first place would be done by general footy supporters, not die hards

Surprised Essendon have the most votes  :o
Didn't they break their membership record last year despite having the biggest cloud in AFL history hanging over them?

yeah it's absurd really

Mailman the 2nd

I have a few theories on why people are voting Essendon  :P

Nige

Every second person I know that isn't an actual footy fan (they kinda just have the team they 'support' for when they get asked) seems to support either Essendon, Carlton or Collingwood.
