Williams Sentencing

I'm gonna buck the trend and say I think this is the right result. Not gonna argue about whether the justice system is flawed or not because that's an endless spiral to nowhere but, as I said in another post in P+T:
As an ex-young bloke, every young bloke makes dumb decisions that could have extremely severe consequences, but by sheer dumb-luck they don't. As an 18 year old I decided to absolutely hoon it in my car just to see if the engine really could manage the 220km/h on the speedo. Turns out it could. Did I do this at a track day or in some controlled way? No. I picked a piece of straight motorway at 3am with literally no other cars on it (not in Aus). I looked back at that almost immediately and thought how easily that could have gone very, very badly. A nail, a pothole, a random obstacle, I would have been killed. Sure, plenty of people woudn't have been dumb enough to do that in the first place, but they're dumb enough to do something else I assure you. There will be plenty of people who drive drunk this weekend and will get home safe without any issues, because of luck - what does that reinforce? At least Marley has a suspended sentence hanging over him. I think this is a great outcome really, enough of a slap in the face that he can't ignore what he did but not something that will destroy his life of the guy he hit.

Actually sending him to jail is only of benefit if he's still a danger to the general public or if he needs it to learn the lesson. The judge obviously thinks he's got the message, so actually sending him to jail is just a waste of taxpayer money, waste of his life and future prospects which are what will hopefully keep him on the right course, and serves no benefit to the guy he punched. However, if she got that judgement call wrong, then he goes in the clink. Simple as that. As far as saying prison is the only option and then suspending it being confusing, it could be that prison is literally the only option - I don't know the sentencing for GBH but given he chose to defend it may be that the minimum sentence once found guilty was indeed a jail term. So literally there may not have been another option. However a bit of sense was used about the benefit of him actually going there...

Come on fellas, we've all done something idiotic I guarantee it, he just happened to do this very publically and picked a slightly more extreme level of stupid and it's bit him. I don't for a second condone assault or drunken idiocy but I also don't think that going to jail in this situation would have been of any use. Yes, he got extremely lucky that the outcome for his victim wasn't more serious. As for rules for some and not others, Cam Brown broke Steven May's jaw, where's his assault charge? He's a 30 year-old man, Williams was 19... Are we really going to seperate those out and say they're completely different? An over-reaction to something relatively minor, an impulsive act of violence, an outcome. Don't tell me Brown was more surgical in where he hit May so as not to leave him with life threatening injuries.

Marley, you f**ked up, you got lucky, now take the chance you've been given and run with it.
