ST KILDA midfielder David Armitage continues to be treated in hospital for a nasty cut to his knee and is expected to miss at least two more games.

Doctors have re-opened the wound and it is being given time to naturally dry out to reduce the chance of infection.

Armitage, 25, suffered the laceration to his left knee against Adelaide last week but he played out the game after having it stitched up.

However, the wound - which was gaping - became red and he was admitted to hospital to stave off infection.

As the Saints beat Essendon on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium, Armitage remained in hospital with his left leg in a brace.

St Kilda head of football Chris Pelchen told AFL.com.au that Armitage was expected to leave hospital in the next 24 to 48 hours and was likely to miss at least two more games.

The Saints play the Brisbane Lions in Wellington on Anzac Day this Friday and then Hawthorn at the MCG in round seven.

They round out their first chunk of the season with clashes against Carlton and Gold Coast before their bye in round 10.

Coach Alan Richardson visited the on-baller on Friday and said it could be some time before he returned to the field.

"He'll be a little while. We're not sure yet; it depends on how his knee pulls up," Richardson said.

"It's not a structural thing. It's just a really bad laceration with a little bit of infection.

"They're on top of it now and he definitely won't play over there [in Wellington next week]."

Armitage shared a photo of himself in his hospital bed on Saturday night as his teammates prepared to take to the field.

Meanwhile, the Saints could have defender Sam Fisher available for selection next week after he got through 80 minutes in the VFL on Saturday afternoon.

However, Richardson said Fisher's lack of a pre-season caused by hamstring and back issues meant he was not a certainty to be called up after just one hit-out.

"I haven't had a look at the game but I've had a little bit of a report," he said.

"'Fish' was good, [Shane] Savage was really good, he responded really well to going out of the team. Maverick Weller, albeit is a rookie, but had another strong performance.

"It's pleasing 'Fish' has got through and is potentially available.

"He hasn't done a lot of work but we'll just wait and see on that one."

Richardson confirmed James Gwilt had raised an initial alarm on the bench when he landed on his hip after being out-bodied mid-air by Leroy Jetta in the third quarter.

After some concern over whether he could finish the game, Richardson said the backman was able to run off the soreness.

DAVID Armitage could be out until after St Kildas round 10 bye with midfielder still in hospital being treated for a gaping hole in his left knee

There is no structural damage to the knee he lacerated in the Saints round four loss to Adelaide but the threat of infection remains.

St Kilda initially hoped the 25-year-old would miss another fortnight but the club tempered its expectations in Tuesdays injury list, listing him as three to four weeks away.

Armitage has been in hospital for more than a week but is expected to be released in the next 24 hours.

The former first-round pick will rest for the remainder of this week once discharged while his teammates are in New Zealand for Fridays Anzac Day clash with the Brisbane Lions at Westpac Stadium.

He is expected to resume light training next week if his recovery continues to go to plan.

He sustained the nasty cut when he landed on the bottom of Patrick Dangerfield's boot and missed last weekend

I was thinking the same thing.
He must have low immunity or something for it to have become so infected.

I can understand though.  I had a slight cut knee when playing football (did not know at the time) and knee blew up and eventually discovered a huge infection got in vai the small cut.  Missed 6 weeks whilst knee was drained and then healed.

Not unusual though given the number of organisms that reside in the soil that can get in via any slight opening.

Yea I suppose one of the guys at our clubs knee blew up like a baloon from a graze. Only missed 2 weeks though :P

THE OPEN wound that spread across David Armitages knee was so gruesome that his St Kilda teammates couldnt look at it when they visited him in hospital last week.
This was after the 25-year-old saw the surface of his left kneecap after splitting open the skin below the joint when he crashed into Patrick Dangerfield's boot in round four.

Theres not much about the injury that isnt stomach churning  from the exposed patella that was immediately stitched, leaving Armitage play to out the game with bits of soil and grass inside his knee, to the infection that developed and the two procedures needed to kill the germs.

So it wasnt surprising the Saints who saw Armitage during his nine-night stay in The Avenue Hospital in Windsor had to avert their eyes.

Tests on the bacteria in his knee showed he picked up the germ from the soil at Etihad Stadium.Armitage was told the possibility for infections from sporting surfaces was always high and said he was just unlucky.
