Culling Cash Cows Early

With Matt Crouch on the bubble I'm seriously contemplating killing off a cow early.

I'm looking at:

Matt Thomas
- Already made $110k - $70k still to make before his round 8 bye (assuming he averages 84-94)
- Might be tough against Brisbane, Geelong and Hawthorn
- Round 5 BE: 29
- Allows me to go Caddy > NRoo

Dom Tyson
- Already made $110k - $75k still to make before his round 10 bye (assuming he averages 81)
- Handy round 10 bye
- Round 5 BE: 38
- Got tagged by Carazzo on the weekend and I'm worried other people will start cottoning on
- Allows me to go Caddy > NRoo

James Aish
- Already made $70k - $70k still to make before his round 10 bye (assuming he averages 67)
- Handy round 14 bye
- Round 5 BE: 38
- Would be my first choice to trade out but does NOT allow me to go Caddy > NRoo

Strangely enough I'm leaning towards culling M.Thomas...

I'm not sure he can hold a 85-95 average until his bye (especially against Hawthorn and Geelong) and in his 8 years of senior footy he hasn't average more than 76. That said he is currently averaging career best figures (disposals and tackles) so might make a good M9 if he can keep this up all season

But then there's the Daniel Jackson factor - from a sample of 4 games (so not ideal) - decreases since Jackson has returned:

-His average tackles has dropped from 9 to 5 per game
- Disposals dropped 25 to 21 per game
- Marks dropped 6 to 3 per game

Thomas still got 102 last week though With scores of 45 and 80 from Crouch I wouldn't replace a guy averaging 103 just for the profit... Personally I think Crouch has come in too early for my liking and I'll have to pass on him. Unless he miraculously doesn't play this week. Tyson was flying before Carrots kept him to 50, I'd still rater have his scores than take the punt on Crouch and field one of Aish/Ellis/Crouch instead...

League or Overall?

Did you start with Thomas? If you brought him in later, then don't trade until he's moo'ed.

Only cull early if you are grabbing a fallen premium. And most of these are still at least 2 weeks away.

Thomas' scoring may drop as Tigers player meetings are likely to be about protecting Cotchin better.

A trade is worth about 200-250k, if you aren't making that on a trade then hold.

Trades are like Helium(research it) and making cash is important considering most rookies were all 50-60k more expensive this year.

Not questioning his output last week but do I jump off now anticipating a drop in form.

I should clarify that Crouch will sit on the pine with Polec/Dunstan coming off the pine for him. Currently running three on-field rookies in my MID (M.Thomas, Tyson, Polec/Dunstan).

Thinking Tyson and Matty Thomas should be upgraded.. Well that's what I'm doing soonish..

Can you do both? haha

Was ranked 405 to start now 2,700 - probably going to give overall a crack for another week or two. Currently undefeated in league so will be in a good spot when I decide to hold on trades

I've already made $115K, and the switch to Crouch will net me and extra $65k by their round 8 byes. So all up $180k made from the trade (and that's not including the $20k I'm going to lose on Caddy this week if he stays in).

Sure it's not quite $200-$250K but I get NRoo in (for Caddy) which is worth 50-60 extra points a week

With that mid set up I guess you could afford to, I'm already playing all 4 of those guys on field. With Thomas having a BE of 29 though surely you wait to see if his form drops rather than anticipating it will happen. Score wasn't affected by Jackson on Friday... If you're culling I think Tyson is the logical choice, has a low BE but this weeks 50 will slow any price rise in the next few rounds. Dunstan struggled last week though so not sure I would risk having to field him...

Bully

Just on Thomas, despite scoring a ton I thought his performance was below par and now think that teams are exploiting his lack of pace. Just how long Hardwick allows this to continue is anyone's guess but there may come a time when Richmond require more than just a battering ram and look at bringing in a player who can run and spread on the rebound.

I think Thomas should be good until the byes at least, but I don't expect him to be in the best 22 by the end of the season

I thinks it's wise to wait until such a time rather than culling him now on a hunch that this might happen though... I didn't see the game to comment on his on-field performance but it translated into a decent SC score... comes down to what's more important to you, points or cash. Crouch goes up 55k this week if he scores his projected 63. Thomas goes up 30k if he scores his projected 94. What's more valuable to you, 30 points or 25k?

frogjumper

Ill post my reseach on all the rookies at some point this week.

But the short answer is so not trade Thomas, Tyson or Aish yet. Even on a downgrade.
If you do you are effectively wasting a trade to gain some short term cash, but still be hit by the Bye.

TBH any rookie that you are looking at downgrading needs to have a max of 50-60k. Basic function is
Loss of possible Cash with original rookie
Loss of Trade
Additional Cash generation Till planned trade round
Warchest Cash
Bye round on Old vs New player
Any threats to JS on new player

Depends how you use the additional cash, freeing up over 200k is critical at this point, I'm not suggesting that Thomas is the only viable option, but he has the round 8 bye which must be of slight concern. Crouch should gain 150k over the next 3 weeks, Thomas may only make 50k. The points will also be negligible given Adelaide's opponents are all cellar dwellers. With an eye to the byes I think it's imperative that people look towards building up their reserves to the 500k mark. It effectively means that 3 premos can be brought in round 9 & 10, guys like Swan, Griffen, Cotchin, Petrie, Cloke & Franklin will all have significant discounts and will no doubt be a serious interest to those vying for top spot.

Just want to point out that Daniel Jackson is injured according to the newspaper. Not sure if he will miss weeks but the commentators on the radio after the game seemed to think so.
So I would not be surprised if he pumps out a 100 average until the bye.
That being said, I am going to trade him for Crouch because of bye balance

Yeah think it's just different strategies, though I wouldn't be banking on Crouch getting tons just because they have cellar dweller opponents
