I'm stuck in this situation, that I'm sure many of you are, where we have Chad Wingard in our teams, but wont play, so should we just bench him, as he's probably just out for one week, or do we burn a trade on him?

Josh Carr: at this stage, it doesn't look like Chad Wingard will play. Angus Monfries is likely to miss 3-4 weeks #weareportadelaide

To Keep

To bench him would probably mean picking a rookie forward, and as the table below shows, very few rookies have broken the 70 point average.

-Of these guys I would be fielding Lewis Taylor, who although only averages 46, but has scored 67 and 62 in his non sub games, and with Josh Green out this week, and Daniel Rich out for the rest of the season, he should score well this week and should avoid the vest.

So to field some of those guys could be classed as fantasy suicide, but who are the other options?

The Thoughts
N. Riewoldt Flat out gun, no denying it. Over the past 5 years, since 2009, his lowest average was in 2011, when he averaged 84.2 points per game. However, he is 100k more than Wingard, so to get him in your team for Wingard, you will need 100k spare.

P. Chapman Another player who has been the best in the last 10 years. Since 2009 his lowest average was last year (84.6), when he managed only 6 games due to injury. This year, his lowest score so far was in round 1 against North Melbourne, when he scored 106 points. Unfortunately Chappy is likely to be rested this week against Freo, and will probably be rested a few more times this year, so he is not a great replacement for Wingard.

J. Merrett Who the heck is this bloke? Merrett's popped out of no where to be one of the highest averaging forwards this year, but can he keep it up? Last Year, Merrett played 13 games, and had a high score of 68 in those games. This year his high score is almost double that. To go to Merrett would be a risk and if he fails, you will have to burn another trade, but if he goes well, he's only 350k, so you gain heaps of money.

B. Harvey Boomer Harvey is still dominating the AFL, despite being 35 years old. I wouldn't pick Boomer in any salary cap competition with limited trades, as I think he will drop off any time now. Saying that, most of you will probably disagree with me. :P

L. Parker Parker is pretty much the only Sydney player I'd consider picking this year. I think that he is a good option to trade Wingard to. They are pretty much the same price, and will probably average about the same. Gun!!

D. Zorko My Boy Dayne Zorko. This year he has gone back to his best from 2012. He is currently averaging the same as he did back in 2012. Now despite only scoring 59, when we were hammered by Gold Coast, I think that he will dominate this year, and Rich being out can only help him.

L. Franklin You shouldn't have to read this, don't touch him.

P. Dangerfield Dangerfields price is on the down, and should be at a very good price in a couple of weeks, but I don't think that he should be the replacement for Wingard, as his price will still be going down in a couple of weeks.

A. Fasolo Downgrade option if you want to downgrade Wingard to make some cash. Only played the one game so far this year and scored 76 in that game. He should have pretty good job security, and will average more than most other forward rookies this season.

I think that it would be ideal to hold Wingard, however, in my forward line at least, where I'm fielding two rookies and Caddy ::) The onlt way to go in my opinion is to trade to Zorko, Parker, or if you're in a gambling mood, Merrett.

Ricochet

Very nice breakdown mate. I think you gotta hold Wingard, especially if its only one week. No point wasting a trade for the sake of 30-40 points

jvalles69

My forward line is resonably leaded with Caddy and Lecras the obvious guys to move and have dones so to Fasolo and Parker as I don't deem Harvey viable with a few dodgy teams for him coming up.  I have Roo, Martin, Danger and Dahlhaus, but Zorko isn't looking like bad option either?

Zorko or Parker for LeCras?  ???

Toga

Good stuff nrich. I don't have Wingard so am definitely considering a few of these guys, thinking Merrett is hardly a gamble though because even if he doesn't hit a huge score he's still gonna generate $$ with that negative BE.

Alka

Merrett will mean burning a trade later though. It's highly unlikely he becomes a premium option that you'll keep for the year.

I noticed you didn't give any of the Hawks forwards a mention, but I think there's a few good options. Gunston and Breust especially. Probably more of a gamble though.

Out of the lot you mentioned, it's a 50/50 for Parker and Zorko for me. Rich being out could spell more midfield time and we know how big Zorks ceiling can be, but Parker is likely safer. I might have to flip a coin.

Didn't do a write up for Breust or Gunston, cause I wouldn't pick either of them  :P

that's my current debate over him
yes, he's got a low BE and may be a good switch option to Dangerfield in a week or 2, but is it worth burning a trade (from Caddy mind) to him for that?

fidou

Read during the week that Port Adelaide had a no risk policy and they weren't risking Wingard who may have played in ordinary circumstances. So if it only a week bench him. I only have him in Fantasy so am doing that.

RoughRed

Note you do not have Darling $398.8k BE 41 Ave 91.33

Hey I am a WCE follower but I am learning (just) not to wear my heart on the my sleeve

So having said that both Breust (BE 59) or Parker (BE 51) should do the same points and $ wise

The Duty of Care situation on any injury means the medicos are erring on side of caution
Question is whether it is only 1 week or 3 that you think Wingard is out
If you think he will be out longer I'd probably go Parker

Swans next 2 games are at the SCG and Parker has banked 100+ the last outings there against NM and Dockers

That's exactly why I'm bypassing him and making the more long term approach (I hope) in replacing the non-playing McDonough with Taylor.

In Nrich's case, I don't think it's worth trading Wingard. I highly doubt he'll be sidelined for more than a week and the kid is a gun.

Bill Manspeaker

that's some great work nrich! top post. also, I'd keep Wingard

Here's the way I think about it:
You have 30 trades, your goal is to get yourself a team of premos by seasons end (or you know, asap). For that you'll need roughly 16-18 trades (depends on who you count as keepers, team structure, etc). I also like to save about 6 for injuries/suspensions for the season (which may be low anyway). Plus the obligatory trade for when Sandilands gets injured. That's 25 trades. That leaves 5 trades to blow on side-ways trades & bridging trades. Not a huge amount, so use them wisely, but it's up to you. Keep in mind it is not 1 but 2 trades to use as a bridge. Myself, personally, I used 2 correctional trades last week, so another 2 here would just be too many.
