it's all good man, wasn't having a go or anything, it's just one of the things you can't take lightly

My concern is say Clark makes a come back (the ideal situation) and puts his hand up to play for the Eagles or Dockers.  The Dees get nothing. ...

Ringo

The debate continues and to take Ossies point How many "retired" players did GWS take in their early and clubs got no compensation picks because players had retired.  Just using that as an example that has happened, Brisbane got no compensation for Luke Power as one.

Reckon Mal Michael hurts also

Wasn't Power pushed from Brissie?

I think that's why there shouldn't be any compensation for early retirements - the line gets blurred & it will be hard for the AFL to keep everyone happy.

Although there's some compelling circumstances in this situation which are a bit different to others.

But yeah, as Rico said I thought most of the GWS recruits were on their last legs at their respective clubs... Pretty sure Port had played Chad Cornes and Brogan very sparingly in their last years at the club and knew their time there was up.

Ziplock

Port had told cornes and brogan to get out, and something similar (albeit, nicer) was said to power. Otherwise they would have gotten traded for late picks or something.

Ricochet

Exactly, you can't push an older player into retirement and then expect comp picks when he goes to another club

That's my concern as well. But it'd be the same as a player walking through the pre season draft wouldn't it?

Except Melbourne would have the opportunity to trade

Ringo

Maybe the solution could be retired players stay on the clubs list as retired players and then if they wish to play again they have to negotiate with the club for a fair release.

Toga

Tbh I don't think it's gonna happen too often, having a player retire due to injury & then make a comeback later on. These players are retiring because their bodies just cannot stand up to the rigours of AFL so I doubt many would come back.

Clark a little different scenario but his injuries could be what pushed him towards retirement in the first place. Could not get his body right.

Ringo

Just remember one of the reasons was depression so if that is brought under control can see him playing footy again in an ideal situation. Fnjuries may have contributed to depression but if both sorted there is no reason why he could not come back.
