Enormous facepalm at everyone calling him soft.

Yep. Young or older it really just shows a pretty archaic attitude.

I currently earn less than minimum wage as a postgrad student studying something I really enjoy with the hopes that future job prospects will make it worth it. Realistically though, I know a lot of recent grads who have ended up in technician roles which don't pay spectacularly more than minimum wage anyway. Seems like it could be 9 years of study for nothing (Yes, I should have done medicine). But I ENJOY what I'm doing. If you offered me a job in another part of the country where I could be paid $100,000 (or whatever) to use the same skills but on a different project that I didn't enjoy, I wouldn't do it. Money doesn't make everything worth it.

Sure, it's a fantastic opportunity... in some peoples eyes. The chance to lay footy for big money, sounds great!... To us. Sounds like to him it wasn't something he could handle, it wasn't an opportunity, it was a cage. And no-one has the right to tell him that's wrong, or that he's soft for deciding to do what he wants.

To all the bleeding hearts out there, how do you think the guy who missed out on an AFL contract feels?

Probably gutted. So it's now Garlett's responsibility to live out every failed recruits aspirations, because he got picked and they didn't? And yeah, he may well come to regret this call, don't see that as being a reason to have a crack at him now. He's made a decision, for his own reasons and for his own benefit, it's not too hard to just respect it was his call to make and he made it...

Yeah HB that's a bit carp mate. Not needed. I disagree with KB labelling him soft also but let's not start dragging peoples personal lives into this...
Mods feel free to delete the last bit if this gets wiped. Would appreciate the rest of my post staying.

Look I'm sorry for bringing that up, but I was just trying to point out to you that there will always be a situation that someone won't be able to handle, but that doesn't make them a soft person. And that's something that I thought you would be able to relate to.

Ummm, well there's another spot on an AFL list just opened up so if I were them I'd be working my ass off...

Master Q

Haven't read much of the thread or article but first thoughts are that he sounds pretty ungrateful...

I think ungrateful is the better word.

That spot could have gone to someone else. They could of worked on their game, have an "AFL player" lifestyle, have a job with good pay (considering their age) etc

Or that person could've worked harder and actually earnt an AFL spot like Garlett did, they'll have another chance next year.

In general people shouldn't make silly conclusions about situations which they do not understand the context of the situation.

Garlett has the right to leave if he feels completely uncomfortable with his job, its what anyone else would do if they hated their job in another state/country.

If you guys think he would've had an easy life, go apply for the draft now

Never said he doesn't have the right to leave, but a 19/20 y.o should have some idea of what they're in for, especially that he has sort of been in the system for more than one year now. And to just throw it all away at once, just like that. I'm not making any silly conclusions, just giving what I think is a fair opinion. Of course I don't understand the whole situation, nobody does except those close to him - so every person's thoughts in here rate no higher than mine do, and I understand that.

There are some pretty spastic opinions in this thread, just sayin :P
