I don't know him, or the situation.

Anyone is free to do what they want or don't want, but I hope he has something to fall back on, otherwise it might be the easy way out.

Repeating again, don't know his situation.

Disappointing news, Garlett is very talented and it's a shame that talent will go to waste.
Hopefully he goes back home and sorts out his life. I doubt Freo or West Coast will take a punt on him.

Agree, he is done I think. Hawks took a risk when every club passed last year, and unfortunately he has proven them right.

He clearly has issues he needs to deal with before he can be in a position to pursue a career as an AFL footballer, but lets not forget how young this kid is too

For those who say his soft or stupid for giving up an opportunity like this, I am not having a go at you at all, but I would be certain your young in age. The older you get, the more you grow and like I said in other thread about him in the SC section, just because it makes sense that it would be a dream for any of us to play, doesn't mean that applies to everyone

Having the talent for something is one thing, but when that talent and passion turns into a job, a hard grind that demands you work extremely hard all day every day, it can get the better of a person, and if they have external issues to deal with on top of that then it's only a matter of time before it falls apart

I hope he gets the support he needs back home, and who knows, in a year or two when he is older, he might be in a much better position to do this, although it might be too late by then, and if it is, so be it

It's definitely sad as the kid certainly has talent. His recruitment came with a risk that all club's were aware of hence why he was passed on the first time, the Hawks then took that risk and it hasn't worked out for either party.

His AFL career is more than likely over. Oh well, what can ya do?

Hopefully he gets things sorted and can get on with his life.



This would mean he'd be LTI'd a bit like Duigan for Carlton and Clark for the Dees meaning they could elevate somebody, right?

Personally, I'd hate to be an AFL footballer - the pressure every week to perform or be dropped, millions of people watching you... and if you're really lucky your career ends at 30.

So if someone gave me the choice of being an AFL footballer, and what I have now, I'd probably choose right now, despite the significant pay cut (though current is more than AFL rookie, but less than an AFL rookie when I first started).

With Australian Football being a National competition we tend to underestimate the pressure put on young footballers when they leave their friends, family and support groups.  Homesickness is a real factor and clubs do their best to deal with it but in some cases it gets too much especially if there are other outside influences involved. Also bear in mind that in cases where they are not in the top ecelon of draft picks they may be consigned to playing in the twos for the best part of their initial contract and some may not cope with that either.
It is also a culture shock as well having to adapt their routines in a different city to what they are used to.  If you call Wanganeen soft maybe you should call all the Brisbane go home boys soft as well.

I wish Garlett all the best in sorting out his issues and trust he may come back and possibly get taken as a mature aged rookie once this has been done. As we know there a re quite a few successful mature aged rookies making a success.

Whilst I still see it as a massive opportunity lost if you aren't happy and it's not what you want, in the world we live you have he chance to try for something else. Hopefully he has something else that he's good at."

Mate just don't. Clearly he is a troubled person who has some issues, but don't just go calling someone soft. Would you call someone with depression soft if they quit their job? Takes a brave man to speak up and say they are having troubles. The stigma that people with mental health issues are soft needs to be cut out by now. We are living in the 21st century now, not the 1930's. So seriously grow up before you start calling someone soft because they are having problems.

Well you would be wrong.. I guess nothing is certain.

  To all the bleeding hearts out there, how do you think the guy who missed out on an AFL contract feels?
   Oh well now he will join the real world and get a labourers job or whatever. Work for quarter of what he could of made from footy..  I wont be losing sleep over his decision, in a few years he will be though.

Bit of a shame as the kid has such talent - I won't call him soft but I just hope he doesn't look back in 10 years time and feel nothing but regret. Don't think any clubs will want to touch him in the future, too many issues.
