Round 1
Port Adelaide 18.12.120 defeated Carlton 12.15.87

Top 5 Dreamteam points:
5. Brad Ebert - 96
4. Chad Wingard - 100
3. Justin Westhoff - 113
2. Kane Cornes - 131
1. Oliver Wines - 136

Top 5 Supercoach points:
5. Jay Schulz - 104
4. Robbie Gray - 108
3. Kane Cornes - 109
2. Justin Westhoff - 116
1. Oliver Wines - 138

Goal scores: Westhoff 5, Gray 4, Schulz 2, Wines, 2, Polec 1, Ebert 1, Butcher 1,
Leading possession: Cornes 30, Wines 28, Polec, 24, Boak 23, Wingard 22.

Highs:

Justin Westhoff: Was one of the reasons we got back in the game in that second quarter when he kicked a massive 4 goals we looked all lost at quarter time struggling to hit targets and Carlton were running all over us, Hoff was playing more down back in the first quarter moved up forward and proved to be a game changer, Hoff ended up with 5 goals straight and 20 disposals to put in for a near man of the match performance.

Oliver Wines: Second year blues does not exist at Port land, Last year it was The Chad this year it is deffinetly Wines. With a man of the match performance dominated in the middle today leading the game with 11 clearances to go with his 9 tackles. 19 of his 28 disposals were contested and he kicked 2 goals proving to become one of Ports most important players. Walks home with the 3 brownlow votes here.

Jarred Polec We went out in the off season and we wanted pace in return we got Matt White (12 touches) and Polec who has arguably been our best player this year (including pre season matches). He came across lacking fitness and was struggling to adjust to our game style and i for one thought we made a huge mistake recruiting this guy, Boy was i wrong. Lead Port Adelaide tonight with running bounces with 4 to go with his game high 6 inside 50s.

Lows:

Dom Cassisi: As much as it hurts me to see this but i believe Doms time is up i was surprised he decided to play on in 2014 as i thought he would retire at the end of last year. Bar the subs he had spent the shortest amount of time on the ground with just 60% he had 6 disposals with an efficiency of just 50% which was also one of the worst of the club.

John Butcher: Dubbed as the future of this football club and the futures time is nearly up. 12 disposals tonight to go with his 1 goal which he kicked with seconds to go in the game. With up and comers such as Shaw and Harvey. Butcher's days might be outnumbered really needs to put in a solid effort next round against the Crows if he wants to play the remanding of the season.

Travis Boak: Probably a bit stiff to put Boaky here but looking at his numbers after the game something needs to change from 23 of his disposals 10 of which were clangers it is hard to really put anyone else in this position though as i believe as a team not many players played poor games tonight and will probably feature in my voting for this game.

Port looked the goods, just need to improve those 1st quarters which were an issue at times last year.

Noz

We do start of games pretty slow and your right Mat thats something that really does need to change.

Rusty00

Impey played well tonight on Garlett. Looked very assured with the ball as well. Probably get the job on Betts next round?

Well played as the blues only played 1 and a half quarters and were burnt with turnovers. A lot of what we saw last year. The last quarter where we won a few last year we where nowhere.

Polec was sublime in the last quarter and Westhoff's 4 goals in the 2nd term was good and Olly Wines just poored it on. 5 mins before game time I made a change and bought Thomas in for Macrae. I think I blew that one unless Daisy improves big time as he missed 3 or 4 sitters in front of goal.

I still can't see why people think Port will slide. They are super fit, young and have quite a few match winners. Tonight showed it yet again and after their finals series last year they are continuing to improve. If they can find another key forward to help out Schulz or Hoff they can push for top 4 and the premiership over the next couple of seasons. I will be the first to admit I had my doubts last year, especially after the loss to the Doggies in Darwin, but after watching them demolish Sydney and Collingwood last year before winning their first final I will say I was wrong. They then beat my mob tonight and if they can win against the Crows next week that will be a perfect start to the season

Firstly let me say I agree.

However, I think that people are just thinking that some of the teams that finished below them will probably pass them (West Coast is a good example).

Good idea Noz, love to hear your thoughts 8)

Any reason Cammy O'Shea wasn't in the team this week? Impressed me towards the end of last year and looked like he was going to be an important part of the side this year, but has something gone wrong? Or has Impey overtaken him or something?

Purely a match up reason mate.

Impey just suited the game a little bit better than O'Shea would have, Clurey also had to be rewarded for a pretty good pre season and he just edged in front of O'Shea but i suggest that will all change come round 2. Impey could be moved up forward to try and expose the slow Adelaide defence so i wouldn't be surprised to see O'Shea named or Carlile but judging by the way Hombsch played on the weekend Carlile might play in the SANFL.

The thing about Port Adelaide's defence now is we have a plethora of players who can fill several positions back and getting a gig is quite hard, I do see however O'Shea playing more up the ground along the wings this year.

Thanks Noz! Yeah I was surprised that he didn't get a game cos I thought he played quite well last season but your reasoning definitely makes sense! I was concerned because I went after him in AXVs as well :(

But hopefully he does get back into the team soon as you say 8)

McRooster

I thought it was interesting that Buddha still had a match day role with the Power despite being the magpies coach in the sanfl??

The Powers depth, on and off field, will be tested if they are having to stretch their resources so thinly.

Noz

Only the one change this week being Carlile back into the side with Clurey being the unlucky one.

Interesting to see that both Cassisi has been named especially since he not 100% with some calf soreness, Also strange that Carlile has been put straight back into the side hopefully he is back to fully fitness but i thought Trengove, Hombsch and Jonas could handle the Adelaide falls this week and Carlile could spend the week playing in the SANFL to be back in time for our round 3 match against North.

Anyways after the game i will continue my weekly analysis of the match and the votes will be back.

Who will get the 10 votes...

Leading possession: Cornes 33, Hartlett 29, Wines 23, Ebert 21, Cassisi 20

Highs:
Matt White
- What a difference a sub makes to a team, Coming into the last quarter we lost the run we had in the first quarter and a half, Stats wise our 3rd quarters have been the worst under Ken Hinkley, Whilst we have been the best fourth quarter team in the last 12 months. White came on as the super sub a couple minutes in the last quarter and took the game by the scruff and produce a wonderful performance. Ended up with 9 disposals, 3 Inside 50s, 2 tackles, 2 goals and 2 goal assists.

Tom Jonas - Slowly becoming one of the most under rated defenders in the comp, Can play on both falls and smalls and proved that again today by going onto Eddie Betts. In the first half Betts dominated both Impey and Pittard kicking 3 goals on them and was looming as the one man that was going to turn the game around and eventually put Adelaide in front. Jonas moved onto Betts after half time and limited his exposure barely sighted in the second half and only kicking the 1 goal. Jonas on the other hand collected 10 disposals to go with his 3 tackles and 6 marks.

Jay Schulz - Puts his claims up to be called one of the best key forwards in the game. Was put on one of the best 1 on 1 defenders in the comp in Rutten and put in a game changing performance. Schulz ended up with 19 disposals, 10 marks and kicked 3 goals.

Honourable mentions: Hamish Hartlett, Kane Cornes, Jack Hombsch, Oli Wines, Chad Wingard, Jarred Polec.

Lows:
Jarman Impey - Had the job on Betts and was close to best on ground at quarter time and was really set for a huge game, After half time it seemed like Impey decided to go to sleep, Betts kicked 3 goals on him. Impey recorded 13 disposals at 43 disposal efficiency which was the worst for the team.

John Butcher - See last week. Exactly the same poor game from Butcher.

The bloke in the coaches boxes that made Ken made - Ken is in the zone don't bother him with silly taps on the shoulder deserved a Mike Tyson knock out.
