It is probably a disadvantage on deep balls but on shorter routes it is a hell of a lot easier to throw and catch. You can really grip your hand around it and you get less balls bouncing off hands of players.

the point is that they illegally tampered with another teams balls, I doubt that it was even ordered by belichek, just a crazy fan/employee that had access
