Versatility is a cornerstone of Ricky Petterd's game, making him a decided acquisition in the eyes of Richmond coach Damien Hardwick.

Petterd arrived at Tigerland at the end of 2012, following a six-season stint with Melbourne, where he'd been used predominantly up forward.

In his 2013 debut season as a Tiger, however, Petterd found himself spending a good deal of time up the other end of the ground.

He made a valuable contribution as a creative backman, using his mobility, marking ability and courage to good advantage for the team.

This season, the 25-year-old expects some further interesting rides on football's positional merry-go-round.

"I'll probably be pushed around a little bit again," Petterd said on 'Sportsday'.

"I do enjoy playing back, but this whole pre-season I've done a lot of stuff on-ball and on the wing, so I think 'Dimma' is looking to just rotate a lot of players through different positions.  I think that's going to be a big strength of ours this year.

"Not just myself, but there are a lot of players who can roll through different positions at the moment.

"So, if it happens that I have to go 'inside' at some stage, and someone else is on a wing, it's not a problem.

"I think that what he's trying to get - a bit of flexibility amongst us."

Yeah Dimma loves him will play most games if he avoids injury, I just can't bring myself to enjoy watching him with that ball drop though.
