Do rounds one and two mean that much for most of us?

Subtle difference between the 2 aims for sure.  :P

Was going to post than realised it's already been done ;)

I still say if your going for league don't look at the draw too much, getting a top 4 finish is extremely helpfull, with the double chance and a possible week off.

Getting a week off will let you save 2 trades in finals.

The only difference should be how early you use trades.

If you rank well you generally do ok in leagues also.

The only difference in a starting team for League (over Overall) is when you see that your opponent has flooded there team with R8 bye Keepers and therefore allowed you to bring in more too.

Haha yeh good point.

I enjoy striving for overall with the aim to improve my standing every week, and still enjoy the head to head competition too, but I don't let the league interfere with trying to create the optimum team for scoring heavily each week and climbing the overall ladder. ;D ;D ;D

If you're top 50ish, say, three or four weeks into the season, you MUST have employed an initial strategy bordering on the outrageous in order to separate yourself from the pack.  Add to that a healthy dose of good luck. I finished top 100 3 years ago by trading like a man possessed until I ran out of trades, then really got lucky with injuries etc.  Yeah, you do need lotsa luck.

In my opinion, if you're only going for league wins, use the first 2 rounds and 2-3 trades to get your team right.

Best example is someone like Buddy. Throw him in your forward line and see how he goes against GWS in round 1. If he stinks it up over the first few weeks, drop him down to someone else before league rounds start.

can i just point out that jfitty usually give good advice from what i've noticed.

that said, cmon man, that is an incredibly bad idea. when going for league you play the long game. i'd never drop a 'premium' player (or in this case 'premium priced') after two games if i'd come to the conclusion pre-r1 they were worth a go. never (barring LTI). keeping your powder dry on trades in the first third of the season at least is the key to leagues imo.

Need to do better than ok in leagues during finals to win.

Need more trades left to cover The General and The Bore (Ross Lyon) if going for league as your priority.

In one of my leagues last year - which I won  ;D, the top score for the GF week was the guy in the 'little' finals whose team came home with a full head of steam but missed the main finals.

So beware - a fine line here.

Goal number 1 - make the finals
Goal number 2 - have trades left over
Goal number 3 - try for that double chance
