Do rounds one and two mean that much for most of us?

Apart from Holzman, do we need to worry too much about rounds 1 and 2, given leagues start round 3?

I am a lot more likely to win my money league than the overall.

This has lead me to rethink my initial strategy of avoiding Hanley, Rocky and Leue (start vs Hawks then Geelong).

Also means WCE guys aren't quite as attractive because their gimme first 2 games won't help my league ambitions.

Anyone care to comment.

Cheers.

yeah not really i'm mainly interested in leagues this year main priority is getting the rookies right

In my opinion, if you're only going for league wins, use the first 2 rounds and 2-3 trades to get your team right.

Best example is someone like Buddy. Throw him in your forward line and see how he goes against GWS in round 1. If he stinks it up over the first few weeks, drop him down to someone else before league rounds start.

I personally don't get how people say "I'm just going for league win" or "I'm going for overall" and how that really impacts the team they select. People going for overall think the extra mid is a must, but then the extra points they gain there are lost in another position

You shouldn't pick players just because their first 2-3 games are against poor opposition. Its a marathon, not a sprint

I just try and put the best team together I can, based on the information available, and then go from there

Overall is mostly just luck. There are heaps of people that are great supercoaches, but some get luckier than others, that is all

Just look at Jay To, the guy is quite intelligent and dare I say there are hundreds of people just as good and knowledgeable as him. He won, and every year since hasn't been anywhere near the top 2-5k. Luck plays a major part, and your only kidding yourself if you think it doesn't

As for the OP question, it might not mean much for you if you don't care about overall, but it should care just as much as it would for someone who is going for overall, because you still want to pick the best team and not have to burn trades before your league has even begun

If I am in the hunt for overall, then of course I will trade harder and not worry as much about my leagues, but this is mid-late season, not the first 2 rounds

I will definitely be worried about rounds 1 and 2 as I would like to finish 25 spots higher this year.  ;)

@RaisyDaisy there are different strategies involved in theory for going league or overall maybe you just not aware of them

whether they work or not is another question

There are some subtle differences in strategy, not so much in the team you first select, but in how you trade as the year goes on. Going for overall you trade soonee and more agressively for points. For league, you hold those trades if you think you can win that week without the extra 50 points and hold teades longer even if it takes longer to finish your team.

For me personally, I gave up on going for overalk when thry brought in the rolling lockouts, working weekends makes it impossible to keep up.

League is more a slow build up with number one priority making the big finals and numer 2 having a full team of guns actually playing and that means having lots of trades left.

Overall is more fly by the seat of your pants and means fewer trades left later.

So there is a significant difference I think.

just as an example

someone going for overall might try and fit in a 5th mid premo and go cheap elsewhere where as someone going for league would prefer to go 4 mid premos to get more cash generation out of the mid rookies

Who isnt going for overall?  :o Unless you are allergic to money why wouldnt ya.

I understand people that are in cash leagues being more concerned with league wins but for me the satisfaction of finishing higher is far more appealing than finishing way down but winning a GF. This is the exact reason that I only join cash leagues that offer the top prize to the best overall scorer and not the GF winner.
I finished top 4 in all of my leagues last year and didnt win a GF yet won 2 cash prizes for being best overall scorer

I think going for leagues and overall is just all BS, I agree the process may be slower but who's to tell me that if you're coming top 10 after a few weeks and were originally going for league that you wouldn't change plans and go for overall. I agree with RD and that is to field the best team possible. You will know very quickly after 3-4 rounds as to whether you're in the hunt. That's when you make decisions about league or overall.

yeah that's pretty obvious

if i was in the hunt and Pendles got injured for a few weeks i'd trade him but if i wasnt i'd keep him and try to field a rookie and save a trade
