With Maric out for 5-6 weeks, Hampson will get most of the ruck time with the Tigers. Is anybody looking to take advantage of this with his low price to make some money and upgrade to someone like Goldstein when Maric comes back? Or is Hampson's scoring ability too low?

He's definitely tempting.  He's looked ok for us in pre-season and you would think he would do most of the ruck work during that time.  Not sure he'll be averaging anywhere near 90 or anything, but a low 80's average could mean he's well worth the risk.

Does Stephenson being elevated cause any concern ?

Nope, not at all.

Purely insurance.

Exactly this. I don't see Stephenson playing unless we're absolutely desperate (i.e. more injuries). Team lists for this week will make a difference but I'm strongly considering Hampson for all three major forms of fantasy.

In fact, I did a similar thing with Renouf a few years back when all of Hawthorn's other rucks were injured. I recall him averaging a decent number until I could upgrade him to a premium ruck. Worked out well for me.

Currently have Hampson as R1 for my Round 1 team, unlikely to keep for Round 2.

He's cheap and playing Gold Coast (although GC will be close to knocking on the door of the 8 this year). But allows an extra gun in the midfield for Round 1.

In the first 6 rounds he will face up against some good ruckmen in Kreuzer, Minson, Leuenberger & McEvoy, so it will be interesting to see how he holds up with them as I'm thinking a majority of his points will come from hit-outs as (correct me if I am wrong) he doesn't look like the kind of guy that will rack up marks and possessions.

Could post some good scores against the young Suns ruckmen & Brodie Grundy, so might be worth the punt, but I'm gonna play it a bit more safe and get more proven guys I think.

Have him for the round 1 free hit in fantasy but that's it. Gone for round 2.

Thinking I might put him in for round 1 only like a few of you are. Basically gives enough cash for another mid premium.

Hampson will put you behind the 8ball in my opinion playing catch up for the rest of the year.  But the more people who take the risk, the better it is for me!  ;D

Having him (and Higgins) for round one instead of better premiums means I can turn Viv Michie into Jobe Watson. HUGE upgrade for a much less significant downgrade. Well worth it for round 1 as far as I'm concerned!

Its like this

Cox and Tyson

Hampson and premium

IF Watson fires against the stingiest DT opponent in the Roos.  Who's to say Michie won't ton up against the lowly Saints and Hampson won't give you a sub par 60 pts.  Not saying these things will happen, but its possible.

Watson - Best case - 120pts Worst case - 90pts  Hampson - Best case - 75pts Worst case - 50pts
Michie - Best case 95 Worst case 75 Cox - Best case - 130 Worst case - 95

I reckon Cox and Michie win, but thats my opinion.  I do think its a good idea to try and squeeze a guy like Watson in, but not for the likes of Hampson.  Can you squeeze him in with Sam Jacobs in the ruck?  I'll be using one of Tyson or Michie in the my M7 spot for the free hit.

LaHug

I disagree with a few of your points. Firstly, Watson's second best career DT opponent is the Roos and his last three against them are 121, 132, and 110. Hampson will be the sole ruck in the Tigers lineup this week meaning that, at the very worst, you'd expect around 65 or so but, more realistically, 75 points. Michie getting 95 points in his second ever AFL game would be a miracle. Think about what most rookies do in their first few games, even if they've had multiple preseasons. You're really thinking more in the 60-85 range.

Let's be generous and say he scores 80 points, Hampson only 65, and Watson only 110. That'd mean Cox would have to score 95 flat for it to be a tie (practically what Cox averaged last year).

Cox without Naitanui last season averaged 105 points. Cox with Naitanui playing averaged just 88. This week, he has to come up against Will Minson (i.e. a very, very good ruck) and Naitanui will steal most of the ruck time. Not looking great for the big fella...

Basically, Cox + Michie really shouldn't beat Hampson + Watson. I'm not saying it's definite either way, but the number strongly suggest the latter pair...
